Who: Johnny Reb and Emo
What: Johnny's feeling down; who better to feel his pain --literally-- than Emo?
Where: Emo's apartment
When: Wednesday midday
Warnings: Standard Johnny warnings (language, bigotry, etc). Also, this may be the closest thing to schmoopy fluff you'll ever see with these two.
It wasn't the worst of Johnny's "worst days of my life," but it was up there in the top ten. The surrender and capture of Atlanta had been such a major victory for the Union and for that goddamned Sherman's March to the Sea; had it really been necessary for them to burn the city to the ground? On his more rational days --namely, those days that weren't painful anniversaries like this one-- Johnny would admit a few concessions. Sherman had evacuated the civilian population before his army's occupation and subsequent burning of the city, and he had agreed to a priest's plea to spare the churches and hospitals. But standing in the remains of the city after the war hadn't given Johnny very many warm feelings for the general or for his actions at all.
The loss of the city was still a sore spot in Johnny's memory all these years later, as everything was. He was willing to forget most of the other, smaller losses, but things of this magnitude never failed to darken his memory a few times every year. Today, he was torn. He couldn't spend this day as he'd spent it and all other anniversaries: alone, drinking, and morose. There was somebody else in his life, as odd as that concept still was, and Johnny couldn't just shut him out every time a dark day rolled around.
He'd gone back to Hank's the night before; in theory he was still staying with his old friend even if he was spending more time at Emo's apartment than anywhere else. To keep the peace with Indie, he left now and then. When a full twenty-four hours had passed since Johnny was last at their apartment, he knocked on the door with poorly-concealed impatience. Once he'd decided to do something --such as let his boyfriend in on one of the worse days of the year-- he wanted it done. This could not be done if the door wasn't opened. Maybe he was out with the dog, or with his band, or with his brother, or anywhere not here. Wouldn't that just be the perfect addendum to this no-good day?
