Who: Lilith and Hecate
Where: Legal Library
When: Afternoon.
Rating/Warnings:Violence

The scene had been a hard one for even some of the seasoned cops to handle. The death of children was always a little harder to handle than that of adults. The six month old, Faith, had been shot in point blank in her crib. Nothing had been left of her precious little face. The two year old, David, had been shot in chest as he'd come shyly out of his bedroom to check on his little sister.

Bloody foot prints had led from one room to another suggesting two suspects. The children's father, the multi-million dollar business man, Chase Harper. The second was his girlfriend, Socialite and hotel heiress, Bianca Winters. One didn't have to go far to eliminate Chase as the murder. He happened to be the third victim. His body lay twisted at the bottom of the stairs like an unloved doll. His neck had been broken in two places from the fall.

When the police had found Bianca she'd been parked outside of her club. Tears ran down her cheeks turning the blood stains from a drying brown to a dark pinkish color. Squinting out at the police officer, his flash light and his gun, she'd said, "The just didn't love me enough..." before she dropped her nearly empty bottle of vodka.

The murders had taken place roughly a week and a half ago. Murders that involved children always made the news. Anything involving scandal in high society made print. It was a high stakes case. Bianca's father didn't want to loose his standing due to his daughters rash stupidity. While nothing could erase the taint on the family's reputation, an innocent plea could at least save their standing. Rumors were better than ruin.

The legal library table that Lilith sat in was covered with books that she appeared to be looking through. The firm of Talbert, Hudson, and Kincade had been tapped to represent the case. It wouldn't be easy, but they were one of the top firms in the city. Lilith used the whole thing as an excuse to get out of the office to do research. What everyone else thought was that she'd left to see if a case had ever been tried that involved similar circumstance were the girlfriend had gotten off with a plea of 'temporary insanity due to postpartum depression'. Sure the woman hadn't bore the brats, but that didn't mean that they could drive her crazy.

Perhaps solving problems the old way is no longer a viable solution, Hecate thought as she materialized in the shadows of the library, stepping unnoticed into the book stacks. Hecate knew some American law, having been exposed to the society for a few hundred years did that to a person, but probably not all the right things in this sort of case. Then again, she had no clue if there was something she could actually do to Hades. No jail could hold him for long, that was sure, but it would be nice to let him know that they were no longer the law of the land, and he simply could not do as he pleased anymore, especially if he wanted to play mortal.

Hecate grabbed a few books and retreated to the tables, seating herself down, just a few seats away from a dark-haired girl that had positively littered the table with other tomes. Before cracking open the first lengthy creature ahead of her, she made an effort to smooth out her black dress and toss her red hair. Then, perhaps almost hesitantly, she opened the book to the table of contents, her finger trailing down the page in search of something that could possibly help. After a minute or two she let out an exasperated sigh, wishing that this process was an easier one, and set the book aside, reaching for another. She then repeated the process, which again yielded no results. Hecate cursed under he breath and propped up her elbows, leaning her face into her hands as her fingers worked through her crimson curls. Why did this have to be so hard?

It wasn't uncommon for Lilith to appear to be doing one thing while she was really doing another. What she looked like she was doing was the research she'd let everyone know she'd be out of the office today; What she was really doing was checking out the others in the library. She did this almost every time she came to this library. It was on her agenda to know who was up coming, those who might be worth keeping her eye on.

There were three things she was looking for in a prospective fresh young lawyer for her firm. The first was talent. Could hire anyone that wasn't up to snuff. Hire someone that will loose cases and the firm would start to loose reputation and clientèle. The second was an unhealthy sense of greed. If someone was greedy enough they would do anything for money. It didn't matter whether the person they represented was innocent or guilty, if there was any conceivable way, they would win that case. Which was good, since most of the people that Talbert, Hudson, and Kincade took on were usually guilty. The third was a good dose of vanity. Vain individuals were almost as easy to manipulate as those who were insecure. The main objective in both cases was to stroke the ego. The only difference really was that someone with no confidence was always looking to you to see if they were right, while people with too much confidante always knew they were right. They would only voice the opinion to let you in on their brilliance.

The woman who sat down a few chairs away didn't really seem to fit with the legal crowed. The woman who sat down a few chairs didn't even feel like the others. Yes, this woman was definitely out of place. If it were any other library Lilith might have let it go. However books filled with law were usually even too dull for anyone to dabble in lightly, mortal or divine.

Lilith caught herself staring at the other. It took herself a second to shake herself out of it. It was rare for anyone to catch her attention like that. "Excuse me, Miss," She began with a small smile, "but you do not really seem like the type to be pouring through dusty old legal text. Is there some kind of..." Her lips curled up to give her an almost feline look, "special legal conundrum I may assist you with?"

It was rather unlike Hecate to deal in mortal affairs such as these. Law was not exactly something she had a fountain of knowledge about, and politics had best been left to the Athenian scholars. Thus, drastic measures such as these proved that Hecate was desperate. In any other case, she would never become this passionate about something, but Persephone's safety was something she took extremely seriously. Consequently, the frustration she felt from being so powerless and having to resort to mortal means was even greater than normal.

When she felt Lilith's eyes on her, Hecate straightened her form, composing herself. There was a sort of eldritch aura about her, something archaic. Like Lilith, she represented feminine power, and it resonated off of her in the form of an almost tangeable regalness after she regained her composure. She cast a sideways glance at the woman, raising an eyebrow slightly as she replied with a single word, "Perhaps."

Hecate was no stranger to recognizing divinity. The look she was giving her came off as somewhat predatory, and Hecate began questioning the woman's identity. Some trickster God, perhaps? Or something that presided over chaos and disorder, like Eris? It was somewhat ironic, then, that Hecate would find such a creature in a legal library. Then again, it was the perfect playground to cause trouble. Besides, Hecate was sure that she didn't look like she belonged here either.

"Then again, it depends on you qualifications," Hecate added, just a dash of suspicion in her tone. She was wary to accept help from anyone, especially divinity she was not familiar with.

The expression on Lilith's face softened a bit. It went from a prowling feline to that of a eager playful kitten. She may not be a trickter like Hecate may have thought, but Lilith did like to play games. It made immortality more interesting. Usually she only got to play with pawns. Mortals very very rarely knew how to play the game, just get played by it. But here was someone who knew how to play. It has been so long since she'd had someone to spar with in a bit of friendly conversation.

"Ma'am," she said assuming a professional tone, "I graduated from Harvard Law at the top of my class. I may appear to be a child in the legal game, but I assure you I am a queen that takes all. I haven't lost a single case yet." That was only a partial lie. Not everyone she defended got an innocent verdict, but none of them had gotten guilty either. Insane was sometimes as good as you could get.

"At least that is far as the Legal System of this Country goes. As far as Divine law goes I understand it, but don't always follow it," her dark eyes sparkled fondly, "I may not be able to solve every puzzle set before me by ... God, but would it really hurt to ask me to try to put the pieces together for you?" there was a small mischievous pause, "After all I can't do much worse than you are right now."

Hecate's eyes narrowed as the woman before he continued speaking. Not out of anger, but instead out of a slight curiosity as she attempted to read her. Hecate was good at playing the game that Gods liked to dabble in, as most of them were, yet her specialty was in being either unapproachable or impossible to understand. And both seemed to be failing. Hecate inwardly cursed the stress that this whole affair was causing her, as it seemed to be making her easy bait.

"Ah, vanity," she responded sarcastically, "How refreshing. I'm afraid that alone prevents you from being any true assistance." Hecate's jaw tensed, and almost on cue the law books in front of her shut themselves. She was considering asking the woman for help, but bringing in an outsider into a most delicate situation would be most inappropriate. Not to mention a horrific overstepping of bounds on Hecate's part. No, she would not stoop to ask for assistance. Instead, she briskly stood, once more smoothing out her dress, and picked up the books she had retrieved from the stacks.

"All of you think that you're above the law, that its something to be bent and played with at out whim, but we don't make the rules anymore." She said this last bit very quietly, perhaps too quietly for Lilith to properly hear. She began walking away and then stopped, turning slightly. Her eyes regarded the floor as she added, "Though, if I were to ask you for help, how precarious is kidnapping? Not just any kidnapping, but say, perhaps....a member of the nuclear family?

Above the law? Lilith didn't ever claim to be such. She followed the laws that were fair. Or at least fair in her mind. Laws that subjugated her or ruling that left her lacking were something she'd abide by. There wasn't one rule she'd ever broken that she was overly ashamed. Infanticide was frowned upon yes, but if God would release her from the burden he inflicted upon her she would gladly stop.

"If you were to ask me for assistance, I would tell you that kidnapping is pretty damn precarious...but I would also have to tell you it would depend on the circumstances. Not all Kidnappings are in ill intention. Let's say that a child was abused or neglected by his parents. If the Grandparent or Aunt or even a friend of the family came to make sure that the child were loved, that would be horrid would it? However if it were a case were they wished to do things that would deceive trust, that I would tell you, If you were to ask is something to be looked down upon."

Hecate was so sick of the seemingly stereotypical attitudes of the divine. So many were just out to pursue their own agendas, uncaring of the harm and damage they inflicted upon others. Perhaps it was a good thing that so much of their power had been taken away. Humans seemed to be doing just fine for themselves, for the most part. Sure, there was the occasional World War or genocide situation, but most people nowadays seemed decent.

"Fascinating analysis," Hecate said somewhat dryly, "I think I've reached an answer to my hypothetical question," she smiled lightly as she reached a sort of epiphany, "The law here isn't about might is right, or the will of the strongest. Just because you can do something, doesn't give you the right to do it." How different that notion was than what life in the Mythic Ages had been. Perhaps it was common knowledge here, but Hecate had never really understood or begun to accept the notion until recently.

"My name's Kate," Hecate said after a few moments of silence, "Thank you for helping me reach some sort of conclusion." Ah, Gods thanking people for doing things for them, this certainly was a new era.

Hecate's disapproval of Lilith didn't seem to bother her. Why should it? It wasn't like it was something new to her. Over time she'd gotten used to people not understand or agreeing with her. It didn't phase her in the least. She'd stand by her beliefs in what is right and wrong just as strongly as anyone else. Besides, who was this Kate person to judge? She didn't know Lilith. Didn't know what she'd been through or the circumstances of her fury. Why should the views of a stranger, even a divine stranger, mater to her?

"I'm sure you would have reached a conclusion of some sort on your own," She smirked with a little twinkle in her dark eyes, "Everyone does." Opening her brief case she pulled out one of her cards. "My name is Lilith, but my friends call me Lily. If you ever need anything don't be afraid to be in contact."

It wasn't that Hecate outright disliked Lilith, but she was the type of person who was very skeptical about all new encounters, particularly with divinity, and while she had every intention on being civil, she was not about to overly friendly until with someone she didn't really know. Hecate was seeing pros and cons in her, but she certainly was not about to pass some sort of final judgement until the two got to know each other, should that happen.

"Haha, thank you for the vote of confidence," Hecate said as she put the books back where she found them, then returned to where Lilith sat. She shook her head and chuckled, "I'm learning more about the way the world works every day, I guess. Its so different than the Old Days," she took the card and gave it a look before slipping it into the top of her dress. Well? She didn't exactly have any pockets, or even a purse, for that matter.

"I think I've heard of you before. Maybe we run in the same circle. Not Pantheon, I mean, because then of course I'd know you, but patron-wise. Aren't you a big name witchcraft?"

"Things change, but that has always been the way of the world," she said cocking her head to the side. The pose gave her an almost child-like innocents. Lilith knew all to well how quickly things could change. However, she usually went with the times. Not always. "One can only learn one day at a time." And she had been around enough days to get to know the modern world. It had grown around her. Truth be told, she actually really loved the modern age.

"I suppose that depends on what you would consider big," She said with a dismissive shrug, "I will admit I appear here and there. Some may consider me a big part of it...others may just see me as a dabbler." The inflection in her voice didn't give away her importance. In several schools of witchcraft Lilith was highly esteemed. However, at the moment she didn't really feel like bragging.

"I suppose its our job to adapt as best we can," Hecate responded thoughtfully, thinking of all the changes she had made in her life in order to better fit this world. After a few moments lost in thought, Hecate shrugged with an audible, "Hmph."

"Well, you're still around, so obviously someone thinks you're important," Hecate shot the woman a look, half of her mouth curving into a smile, "Well, I must be off, but thank you again for your help. I'm sure our paths will cross again." There Hecate went again, being all archaic, but she felt like she should throw something like that out there, being the Goddess of Crossroads and all. It was her job to know these things. With that, she turned and disappeared back into the stacks of the library, vanishing inconspicuously into the shadows.
