It was Laura's birthday today, and even though they were driving through the veritable backwoods of Missouri, Jesse remembered. His old life was at the forefront in the form of the house and farmland standing in front of them, but the reminders of his current life were climbing out of the car after him. Frank was very near vibrating with excitement as soon as he read the sign stating where they were and Mary was muttering something about how it wasn't fair that they'd gone on a vacation based on what Frank wanted. Jesse ignored them both as he slipped Laura a simply Polaroid photo. He'd scrawled 'Happy Birthday' on the back and the picture was a simple one of a pineapple on a table. It wouldn't have been remarkable aside from the fact that it was draped in pearls.
"I intend to be in a far better mood today," Jesse murmured, kissing her on the cheek. "I thought about bringin' that with us, but it didn't seem safe. After all, I know all about stealin' things durin' travel, don't I? It's waitin' at home. You, uh, 'member the pineapple don't you? Thought it was kinda funny. There's more back at the hotel, things I didn't think anyone'd be fixin' to steal."
He smiled and kissed her cheek again. "Happy birthday. Let's take 'em into the backyard. We go into the house first and Frank won't let us leave."
