Carlie had shown up with cupcakes and a huge bag of make-up around four. Dev’s insistence that she didn’t need a make-over or a fashion consultant had been cheerfully overrun with Carlie’s enthusiasm and then sedated with birthday chocolate. When they were through, Carlie was smug and Dev was wondering how Carlie had managed to talk her out of wearing her usual boots under the gauzy skirt and into some cute dancing shoes that left more of her legs bare than she was completely comfortable with. But she wasn't given too much time to worry about it, as she had to defend her hair from being straightened and fight for her right to wear at least two necklaces before she was hustled out the door.
To her surprise, they first met up with Jason and a few other of her college friends who lived in the area. They had all come in to go to the club together, but first, they were taking her out to dinner - which was pizza at a local pizzeria, but Dev didn't mind. In fact, she had a hard time not thinking about anything other than the appreciative way Jason had looked at her after he hugged her, and how he insisted on sitting next to her at dinner, and just how badly Carlie was going to hold this over her head for the rest of their lives.
Around seven, they headed into Greenwich and despite herself, Dev was excited. Dean -- College had said that he knew good spots for music and it had been too long since she'd been able to listen to a live band. The club Carlie led them to was perched on the corner and painted a dark blue. There was a line, but Carlie went up to the bouncer and exchanged a few words and then soon they were all waved through.
It smelled of old smoke and the lighting was dim, plush couches lined the walls and the bar was lit by neon with soft lanterns illuminating the tables. A dance floor was cut down into the center of the room, neatly dividing the floor - but all of these impressions were secondary compared to the music coming from the stage directly across from her. Dev grinned, and couldn't help but spin around to hug Carlie with glee -- this was fantastic.
There were a few couples on the floor which looked like they knew whatthey weredoing, but there were also a few people out there just swaying to the music and having a good time making fools of themselves. Carlie's friend claimed them a table with a good view of the floor, said that a waitress would be over to take their orders soon. Dev took a deep breath, relaxed, and tuned out the chatter of her friends for a moment to just focus on the soothing piano notes complimented by the acoustic bass and guitar.
