Who: Pollux and Lela
What: A pity date. Lela's trying to take Pol's mind off of Iris. We shall see if it works.
When: Sunday afternoon, 1:00
Where: Astoria Spring Festival, in Queens
Warnings: Awkwardness.

As he walked toward the entrance to the street fair to meet Lela, Pollux was trying his hardest to pull himself into a more festive mood. Castor had made a list in their shared journal of the things he liked about spring, and some of those -- the sailing, the green growing things, the people out and about -- really were good things. So he was doing his best to think more positively. Meeting Hyakinthos the other day had helped, and the boost from Orpheus' concert had definitely brought the twins closer together, and so he should have been happy.

But Iris was still in his mind. The time he had spent with her was all too fresh in his memory, and this -- Lela had called it a date, so that's what it was, he supposed -- this was making him think of her again, despite his best intentions to keep his spirits up.

Lela was a friend, though, and maybe, maybe she wanted something more. And even if he wasn't sure that he was in the right frame of mind to consider another woman like that, even if he had convinced himself that he and Castor were better off with just each other... Lela had been so nice to Castor while he had been gone, and Pollux wanted to repay her as best he could. So here he was, approaching the entrance to the festival. He spotted Lela in the crowd and raised his arm to wave at her, giving her the best smile he could muster up.

Lela really had no idea what had come over her when she’d asked Pollux to come with her to the festival. If it had been just as friends she wouldn’t have felt so awkward. But she had very clearly stated that it was a date. Just them. No one else. And she was incredibly nervous about this. She didn’t date. She didn’t often see anyone in that way, and so it was entirely new to her. However, she did see Pollux as someone who would be potentially more than a friend. If he didn’t see her that way, she wouldn’t push it. She could live with being just friends. Besides, she’d lived centuries without being with anyone like that. She could live a few more that way.

Whether or not he ended up not thinking about Iris, she really just wanted him to have a good time. Of course, the very fact that she was essentially a rainbow didn’t help much. The very fact that she made rainbows probably didn’t help with the situation. It probably would have made his mind wander and then she would be left to herself, in a sense.

However, as she stood next to one of the displays near the entrance she felt that presence she had gotten used to over the past months. Turning, she saw Pollux and walked forward to meet him half way. “Hey! You made it.” She said once she was close enough. Well, there they were. In the middle of the crowd. Now what? She glanced around, wondering what would be fun. Well, this wasn’t awkward at all. What was it about being on a date that made it awkward? When they just hung out or he was giving her kick boxing lessons there wasn’t any awkwardness. So why did it have to be that way now?

Pollux gave Lela a more genuine smile, because she really was a nice woman and a good friend. There was just something about rainbows that made him happy, and even if he was also reminded of Iris, he enjoyed Lela's presence in her own right. Despite being a warrior and an athlete who had once killed a giant in a boxing match with one well-aimed blow, Pollux was never very certain in himself at all; Castor was the one with self-esteem in spades, and Pollux needed affirmation. Lela was always so sweet, and he felt better being around her.

"Hi," he greeted her in return, and lifted a hand to -- what were you supposed to do on dates? He had been on one or two, but quite honestly, he was better at picking women up for one-night stands than actual dates. He settled for touching her arm briefly before dropping his hand. In an attempt to be less awkward, he shoved both hands into his pockets and gave her a slightly strained smile. "So," he said, and looked around. "Um. Hi. Have you been here before? I don't really know -- what's good. Or what you want to see." He glanced up at Lela again, hoping that she would suggest something, because otherwise all of this was going to be hopelessly awkward and uncomfortable for both of them.

Lela really just wanted this to be a good time, even if a little awkward. She wasn’t out to get him to fall for her, by any means. Really, she just wanted a chance to show that she was out there as well. And if it ended up they were just friends material, Lela wouldn’t be hurt. Maybe a little embarrassed for a few days, but certainly not hurt. She wasn’t really out to find love, anyway. These slightly “more than friendship” feelings she was having for Pollux were simply a sign that maybe she did need to get out there. And why not got it a shot?

She was rather old fashioned when it came to dates. She didn’t go out much, at least not on dates. And she had expectations that the guy was the one who asked the girl out. But considering she thought Pollux would never actually ask her on a day, and that modern times were very different than back in the day when girls waited to be asked, she figured it was time to do the asking.

She shrugged and looked around. Compared to the old days, this wasn’t much of a festival. Really, it was just hundreds of booths or tables set up on either side of the road, selling merchandise or food. “We could just check out the booths?” She suggested, looking back to him. “I think I heard something about music, too.” And dancing. But every time Lela danced, she made rainbows. So there was that as well.

Pollux nodded, relieved that there was something she wanted to do, and after a moment of painful indecision, he took his hand out of his pocket and took Lela's arm, holding onto her gently. He thought he remembered doing that the last time he'd escorted a girl to a party, and even if that was a hundred years ago or more, it seemed polite. "Sounds good," he answered, a bit more confident, and led the way, looking around with interest. It was colorful, at least, and the different sorts of food smelled pretty good.

He smiled at Lela, his spirits lifting. He could do this. It wasn't so hard. "Are you hungry?" he asked. "We could grab something to eat. A lot of this smells pretty Greek, and, you know." He shrugged. "I love Greek food." Not that it was the same nowadays as it had been back home in Sparta -- Spartan food wasn't that great, really, but Athens, now, and Crete had done great seafood. He still had a taste for the food of his homeland, and really, the food had only gotten better since he had been young.

Lela enjoyed a good Spring festival. It put her more in the mood to run off and make her rainbows. Then again, it didn't take much for her to be in the mood to do that. It was her life, after all. But these festivals also made her appreciate so many things. Even if they seemed a little pointless nowadays, considering they were mostly about getting large groups of people together to buy or sell things. But it was a good time nontheless. She was a little taken back by his taking her arm, but let him without hesitation. Really, she had no idea what to do in these situations. She was used to going for coffee or even the movies with friends, but never dates. This was all too new to her.

Brows lifting a little, she looked over to him and then back at the booths, nodding, "Yeah, sure. Gyros are Greek, right?" She asked curiously. She'd had plenty of those and they were devine. Lela was a food fan, there was no question about it. She liked trying new things and if there was anything he suggested she try, she would most likely give it two tries before deciding whether she liked it or not. Maybe three. Who knew. She looked around at the various food stands. "Which one?" She couldn't decide and hoped he wouldn't mind choosing for them.
