Steak and Shake Down
Who: Ares and Enyo
When: Early evening (Before the snow, May 5th)
Where: Enyo's small estate, just outside of NYC
What: Dinner, catching up... And a little questioning.
Warning: Innuendo. It's Ares. Honestly.

It had been a pleasant dinner to be sure. Steak, no vegetables as Ares had requested. Rare but not dripping for him, nearly mooing for her. But her cook had long since grown used to such strange requests from "Blair" which she had asked Ares to call her in a very quiet voice upon his arrival. It was something she had neglected to tell him in a post. Blair Swanson... She hated the alias but there it was anyhow.

Now, dinner was over and it was time for drinks for Enyo was being very proper about the whole thing. Drinks in the drawing room. She'd even dressed for the occasion - well, not really but it seemed like it anyway. She had settled in a rather rich looking arm chair that seemed more like a throne than anything else, tapping a forefinger on the rim of her brandy glass as she just... looked at him. He appeared well enough though his post had made her wonder.

And now it was time to ask now that all the staff had left for the night. They could talk freely, use the proper names, "Why was Deimos speaking of Thebes and fighting Kadmeans again when that era is long gone?" She was trying to be diplomatic in her asking instead of coming out and asking why her nephew was acting fuck-nutting insane. Diplomacy was not her strong suit so it was sort of a miracle.

He felt a little underdressed even though he had come here straight from work and was still wearing a suit. He felt he was missing a few tassels or a cravat or something - but if he felt uncomfortable, it never showed on his face.

Things were just as they had been between the two of them; they got along as well as they did three thousand years ago, even though everything about them had changed. Even they themselves have changed.

When she asked him about Deimos, he sighed and slumped a little in his seat. He hated repeating himself but this was someone else asking him the same question others had asked him before, and it was a valid question for someone who might not have been kept in the loop.

"He's been a lil' off since I had one of my psychotic breaks and nearly erased him." Ares spoke about it casually between his drink, which probably suggested that the both of them - all the Greeks, in fact - were used to having to deal with the Olympian and his mood-swings.

"I don't think he's aware of where or when he's at, what he's doing; all that kinda stuff. He's been like that for a while."

There had been a time when she dressed like a warrior - anything to look male on the battle field and blend in, be apart of the club. She didn't really need to because she was a goddess but she had done it anyway. Ever since the Victorian age... She had been a girl. Dresses, jewelry, make-up, everything. Strange how that happens, huh?

Enyo continuously tapped on the rim of her glass in a sort of tick. Tick, tick, tap, tap. It was like an ominous metronome. And she had definitely not been kept in the loop. She'd been busy in D.C. doing her old job of war mongering. She couldn't help it; she loved it too much.

Ah, so Ares had fucked up again. Well that explained so much. And to add to that, "Explains why I felt like shit." After all, she was so intertwined with his nephews... And him. And there was very little that was just her to sustain her. "Certainly scared a few mortals by pulling a good, old fashioned faint in the National Air and Space museum." She was lying about how bad it had been exactly and that was very obvious as she wasn't much of a liar.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Enyo rose from her chair, moving to stand in front of one of the massive bookshelves that lined the walls of the drawing room. Each one was filled with books and tiny animal skulls and little hidden treasures. "I hate seeing him like that... Is there any way-" she didn't want to use the words 'to fix him' so she paused and found she couldn't continue. She was growing far too sensitive in her old age.

"-to fix him? I honestly don't know. I'm destructive by nature, not some hippie, flower-power healing bullshit nymph whatever."

He'd been asked that before. By another woman, whom he still was reluctant to associate himself with; yes - mother, queen of the gods - whatever that made him. She couldn't just say 'sorry', give him a plate of food and a can of beer and expect him to forget everything that had happened between them.

That and he'd grown quite comfortable living on his own disassociating himself from the Cool Kid's Club, or whatever the Olympians liked to think of themselves these days.

Eros had talked to him about it too, but almost every conversation with that son ended quite unpleasantly.

"I was told Psyche could help. And that people who were affected by the... incident, who died, came back fully recovered. But I don't want to unnecessarily involve her and I'm not prepared to kill my son just because he isn't 'normal' like everyone else."

Nothing good ever came out of trying to change or force others into becoming 'normal' - Ares himself was a shining example and he'd been doing everything he could to try and let the kids... do their own thing.

Just thinking about it made his muscles tighten, and he drained the contents of his glass.

He didn't really want to talk, or even think about it.

"As am I, dear brother, but he is still your son," and if Enyo had been Deimos's mother... She thought for a moment on his other words, chewing on her bottom lip for a moment, running fingers lightly along the hilt of a decorative and very useless dagger meant merely for show. Still.

"No... Killing him would be... Wrong in this instance," she lightly scoffed at herself for calling a killing wrong. It seemed like hypocrisy for some reason. "However, something needs to be done before he goes on the slaughter in the middle of New York City. It is a possibility. And in this age could cause a great deal of trouble. No matter how much I would delight being by his side," she smiled faintly then shook her head a little.

Enyo turned to face her brother again, sighing heavily without thinking about it which ended in a rather harsh cough which she covered rather demurely with her glass. "Phobos and Deimos are my favorite nephews... I just worry about them," she noted for perhaps trillionth time since they had been born once she could breathe again.

"Honestly, I don't mind if that's what he ends up doing, whether it's intentional or not." Almost all the people here weren't worth jackshit anyway. And though Ares, like their mother, did occasionally remind them that this wasn't Greece and they couldn't do things the way they used to anymore, it didn't mean he was going to put leashes on his sons and stop them from doing what was intrinsic to their nature.

"They're old enough to make their own decisions and deal with the consequences themselves."

That's probably what all parents kept telling themselves to feel better, but if Ares said he wasn't going to intervene, most likely he wouldn't intervene unless the circumstances changed drastically somehow.

"They're immortal, anyway. They can't stay permanently dead." Unlike some of Ares' other kids.

"You know I don't care either but--" she couldn't finish the words. She didn't know how. It really wasn't Greece any more and she could feel it down in the marrow of her bones. That was why she'd filled her house with artifacts of war... and a personal, modern armory but that was hidden for a just in case moment.

"If Deimos isn't sane enough to understand his actions, how can he deal with the consequences," she asked in a very sharp, biting tone infusing her voice with the power that had given her the station of goddess of the battle-cry.

She gave him a very dark look, "And that may be the only reason I haven't tried to beat some sense into you yet." Yet being the keyword but she didn't point that out.

Enyo managed a faint smile, "Enough of this. I have my answers. I would ask something else of you. Something easier and... nicer."

Except he thought that she cared - but maybe that was just... a woman thing. Or maybe it was strange of him not to care; either way, neither of them were right or wrong. It was just the way things were.

"It's not fair - I get that, but nothing in life is ever fair." He wasn't his sons' babysitter. He loved them, and often he was more indulgent than he should be, but he wasn't going to hold their hand through everything and shield them from every storm.

He was open to the change of topic.

"Easier and nicer? You have my attention."

She didn't care if he went out and slaughtered people... Except that she was very certain it would be a very bad idea no matter how much she would delight in the blood and gore.

"So very true," she said blandly, a tiredness sinking into her. But she wasn't going to think about her that in this house. Never. Nothing of that one was allowed in this house.

Enyo's face gained a rather broad smile that might have been a little more sinister than she meant it to be, "I want your measurements." She put her glass down on a shelf and produced a loose tape-measure from a pocket hidden in her skirt and let it fall straight.

"My measurements?" he reiterated, cocking an eyebrow.

"What kind of measurements? Cock size?" he joked, laughing a little even though he was probably asking to get whacked across the face by a cannon or something.

He got to his feet anyway, slipping his hands into his pockets. He might not really know why she wanted his... dimensions, but he generally liked surprises.

Especially if they were good ones.

Enyo nodded at his first question... And then burst out laughing when he continued. "Actually..." She arched an eyebrow, giving him a look. But then she shook her head, "No, kidding. Just things like your waist, height, the normal things."

"You see," she began as she stepped up to him and started taking measurements with practiced ease. After all, Ares was being cooperative. As long as he was cooperating, all would be well, "I like being prepared. And I don't know if you have any modern day armor. So I was thinking about having some made for you. Mine's already in the armory." Yeah, she was paranoid but one never knew. And she was hopeful enough to want the full armory.

"And I like buying strange things and the looks on mortal faces. Might as well make them practical just in case..."

Normal things. So somehow his cock wasn't normal. Should he be flattered, insulted or... disturbed that she knew so much about Mclovin'?

"...modern day armour?" Like what, a bulletproof vest? Or was that a euphemism for something?

"You know, I still have my old one." The one in all those stories written over two millennia ago, plated in gold. It still gleamed in the light when the Sun poured in through the glass panes on the roof.

One of his many ways of holding on to his past, perhaps.

"It's not like we're going to be fighting anyone anymore."

That's not precisely what she had meant but if he wanted to take it that way, she wasn't going to correct him. Especially since she couldn't read minds although wouldn't that be a fantastic ability?

"Indeed... A full suit of it," which explained why she was measuring his head as well. "It's very light. Rather sexy actually," she noted distractedly though she did rather enjoy just putting it on.

"Good for show. Not very practical," she still had her old armor as well but the lighter armor meant for easier movement and it had just as much, if not more protection now. Still, she didn't point this out.

Enyo gave him a bland, flat look, "It never hurts to be prepared. Especially with this growing concentration of gods and demons and other things growing in one city. You know something will burst out of it like the damned Hydra."

With all the numbers in her head (for she was very quick and very efficient), she stepped over to the large desk and grabbed a pen, scribbling notes on a yellow legal pad. The ink in the pen was red. Or was it ink? It was fairly hard to tell from a distance.

"Practicality isn't that overrated."

He liked his old suit of armour - which wasn't really a suit since it had a top and no real pants. He had the nicest, intricately-designed greaves though. He'd probably fit every bit of his old armour if he ever took it off the wall and tried it on.

"And plus, we might be just relics compared to those new gods running around now, but we're gods in our own right - we can't stay dead."

Enyo rolled her eyes and frowned at Ares, "I would rather not visit the Underworld. Again. Ever." She had died on a few occasions - not recently but trekking to Hades's realm was never pleasant. And Charon was not the best of company. Ever.

"We are indeed relics. And so we must adopt, adapt and improve," she had to hold off on the explanation of motto of the Round Table as that was a Monty Python joke and she wasn't that British, no matter how much she enjoyed their horribly bloody history. "Now that all the business and catching up is finished... Would you like to play a game?"

Enyo smiled darkly. She liked games, especially games that could cause trouble. Even if it was trouble for her.

"It's not as bad after the first time, is it?" The only downside to the place was that you couldn't eat anything there. He had fun... refurbishing the place, screwing around while Hades was absent, making fun of Charon and visiting friends who died long ago.

"A game?" He cocked an eyebrow.

"It depends what kinda game it is."

"It makes me nervous. And Charon keeps beating me at every board game I can find. Asshole. Can't even let a girl win sometimes," board games always alluded her. Even games like Risk. She just wasn't a planning sort of girl. It was the blood and gore that called to her - not the strategy behind it.

Enyo grinned broadly as she leaned on the edge of the desk, "A game of options. One is terrible and wonderful. The other is... So-so but it will keep us both out of trouble. You must chose before I give you details outside of this - One will tick off your lady love. The other bears your name but it's not a person."

"...you got to play board games with him? I'm jealous - first he told me to fuck off and join the queue, and then he said if I don't get on his dingy little boat he'll beat me with his oar."

Bastard.

Ares would have gone for the one that was terrible and wonderful without even thinking about the other option - but then she had to say the ticking off the lady love bit and that made him reconsider.

"Not the one that'll tick off the lady love," he answered tentatively, narrowing his eyes a little, wondering just what it is she was trying to... play.

"Do you have any idea how boring his job must be? Just got to use the right words," she waved her hand dismissively like it really didn't matter. But honestly, attending the dead day in and day out... A game of chess or some such was a nice way to spend the day, even as he ferried other back and forth.

Another wave of her hand, "Ah well. I'll save that one for Dionysus then." After all, she did owe him a little visit... Always a good time with him, "Really, it wasn't that bad. I just got a tattoo a few months ago. Haven't had a chance to get any opinions yet." Of course, the thing went from her right ankle to about mid-rib and a bit on her back.

"Since you have chosen the other... Well, firstly, do you ever miss the chariots and the horses?"

"Yeah, that's easy coming from everyone else. We all know I have a way with words - I'm sure it'll be as easy for me as it is for you."

He wasn't sure Enyo would get Dionysus to do anything to piss her off - Dionysus shared Ares' weakness taste for women. Except for Hera.

Where the fuck that one came from, Ares didn't want to know.

"No, I don't," he said after a moment's thought. He loved it - loved his horses, loved his chariot, loved the glory - but now it was all a forgotten past.

"I dream about the past all the time, but I don't think about it anymore."

"I also have feminine wiles apparently. Apparently being the key word here since... When the fuck has there ever been a steady man in my life?" Yeah, never. Never, ever. A few flings over the many, many years but nothing to be called steady. Unless you counted usually being on speaking terms with Ares.

"That's unfortunate. Because I have this beautiful Friesian who just happened to come with the name Ares," yes, she had managed to do very well. She had horses on her property and money to burn. "Lovely animal. Stubborn though. Bit of an addiction to sugar cubes."

"It depends on how you define 'steady man'... Women have always got the short end of the stick - in our time, in today's time, and probably for a few more years to come." It was likely that if it had been one of Ares' girls who got inflicted with what Deimos had, he would have intervened by now.

"A Friesian?" he repeated questioningly. He hadn't handled a horse in over a century - and how did she get her hands on a horse to begin with anyway?

"I don't think feeding it with sugar cubes is all that great of an idea - what did you want me to do with a horse anyway?"
