If you don't like a painting or a sculpture, you can simply look away, walk to the other side of the room. Performance art is much harder to dislike. You could look away, but you'd still be in the theater. You have to get up and walk out, becoming a part of the environment yourself, adding your own contribution to the art. Oscar Lombard found himself in this unenviable position, attending the premiere of a play. In his case, however, he was not even free to walk out, as he had to review the performance for his magazine.
The play was a long, overly verbose look at the role of a leader. Oscar liked the play much better when he saw it the first time as "Antigone." Thankfully, a murder signaled the end of act two, and the crowd was released into the foyer. Oscar had a whole list of adjectives scribbled in his Moleskine journal, ready to skewer the play in his article, but he thought instead that he would test the waters. What did other attendees think about it? If nothing else, their fawning admiration for the supposed wunderkind playwright would be good for a private laugh.
Purchasing a glass of porter (the premiere only provided white wine), he began to wander through the crowd.
