The small basement beneath the minister's side room had been a nice surprise. Orpheus wondered if it had been built to hide things very un-christian at first, but he thought that was probably too strange a thing to hope for in an abandoned temple. And it had been filled with random odds and ends, things shoved there and forgotten. He supposed it was just extra storage, now.
There were quite a few old and ornate crosses that couldn't stay, but that he was loathe to throw away without offering to Asterion first. And there had been scenery from what he assumed were church children's plays, he'd brought a few broken, painted backgrounds with him as well, shoved into his duffel bag with some larger pieces of broken stained glass windows that had been upstairs hidden under a dirty tarp, and he carried with him the baby Jesus from the nativity scene he'd found, even though he couldn't carry the larger pieces. On the subway, hardly anyone looked at him twice for having the large statue of the baby under his arm. This was, he thought, why he loved the subway.
Finally at the apartment for the address Asterion had given, he thought for a moment before knocking to announce himself. He had to pick the lock, Asterion had said, but he didn't want to bust in on him without at least knocking first.
