Who: Sarah and Leah (closed narrative)
Where: Sarah's loft
When: Monday morning
Rating/Warnings: None
After the past weekends terrible event, Sarah hadn’t been in much of a mood to go anywhere. She had canceled her class that day, though she knew she would have to have it on Wednesday. She just needed some time to herself, to think, to mull everything over. Samuel’s words were still fresh in her mind and he was right. It did not do to dwell on death, especially since she had no idea when “her time” would come. For now, she simply had to keep living her life. But that didn’t mean she couldn’t take a much needed break.
However, just as she was settling down to watch Breakfast at Tiffany’s her phone rang. Seeing that it was Leah, she picked it up, “Hey, what's up?”
“Sarah, finally! I’ve been trying to call you for like an hour!”
“Oh sorry, I was in the shower. What do you need?”
“Ohhhh….I was just checking to see how you’re doing.”
Sarah made a face. Her sister sounded awfully suspicious. “Okay… we talked last night. Shouldn’t you be sleeping in since it’s Spring Break?”
“Nah, I really wanted to call my big sis.”
“Leah, what do you want? You never just call unless you want something.”
There was a knock at the door and Sarah headed for it, “Hold on, someone’s at the door.”
Usually, she checked the peephole but not this time. When she opened the door she found herself staring at a beaming... “LEAH?!”
Sarah hung up her phone and had no choice but to embrace her younger sister, who had thrown herself at Sarah. “What on earth are you doing here? Do mom and dad know you’re here? How?“
“Spending time with my sister. No. And I flew in an airplane. Dad hadn‘t got around to refunding my ticket so I took the liberty of using it.” She was trying to look as innocent as possible even though Sarah was clearly disapproving.
“I‘m gonna have to call dad, you know.”
“Yeah yeah, I know. Can I come in or what?”
“OH yeah, come on,” she said, stepping to the side and allowing her sister to come in, just now seeing that Leah was carrying two large pizzas… which smelled heavenly right now.
“You didn‘t have to bring food, you know. I‘m capable of cooking. Plus I would have taken you out.”
“I know, I just wanted to treat you for once. So,” said Leah, setting her bag down next to the couch and plopping down, opening the top box and pulling out a slice, “What do you want to dooo?” She took a big bite and stared up at her sister.
Sighing, Sarah sat down next to Leah and took a piece, “I‘m calling dad af-” but she didn‘t finish her sentence. Her father was already calling. “You‘re gonna have to talk to him soon.” And she picked up. “Hey dad… yeah, she‘s here. Just showed up at my door. Mhm, yeah, you can talk to her.” Smirking, she handed the phone to Leah, who took it with a beaming smile.
“Hi daddy!” And she was silent for nearly ten minutes with only a few ‘mhms‘ and ‘okays‘ here and there. “All right, I promise to be good. Love you too. Bye.” She looked sheepishly at Sarah, “He said I can stay but I have to be good… obviously. Sooo… it‘s okay with you?”
Sarah nodded, “As long as it‘s okay with dad, it‘s okay with me. You can sleep in my bed-”
“No, I‘ll sleep on the couch.”
“No, you can sleep in my-”
“Sarah, I‘m not about to sleep in your bed. I don‘t mind the couch. Or the floor. I just want to hang out with you this week.”
And that was that.
