Who: Eris and OPEN
What: Gloating
When: Monday night
Where: Central Park, up a tree

Eris, being no stranger to dramatic irony, lazily smoked a joint as she watched the sky darkened to a brilliant inky black. She was up a tree, her back pressed firmly against its solid bark that was still damp from a previous bit of rain and snow. She hummed as she smoked, occasionally kicking her heel against the branches of the tree, causing some dead leaves to flutter to the ground. It was a good night, a bloody night, her boys had done their job, and their mother was ever so proud. Of course, she didn't really think she could destroy Marijuana, no, he was far to popular. But she had caused a nice bit of chaos this evening.

Ares redefined the meaning of a trainwreck.

There was probably more alcohol in his system than blood at this point - he did a sloppy job of bandaging his hand, and after multitasking like a two cent whore on the computer, he decided he needed a bit of fresh air and time away from the computer, away from people telling him what to do and how to lead his fucking life.

So here he was, at Central Park, because his SoHo neighbourhood was full of old people or rich people who didn't care, and didn't want to be disturbed by some hobo-looking drunkard staggering along the streets.

Ares was actually making his way over to the pond, by the tree that he always used to sit.

Somehow he found himself drawn to another area of Central Park. He found himself drawn to a particular tree. He didn't realise Eris was sitting in it, or anything.

He just walked straight into the tree.

Falling back on his butt, Ares laughed out loud, propping himself up on his arms against the grass.

"Sorry," he said to the tree inbetween chuckles as he tried to get back up on his feet, successful only after multiple attempts. He patted the tree trunk almost affectionately and groaned a little, dusting the grass blades and dead leaves off.

"But you should... really watch where you're going."

Eros was out for his usual evening run; it was rare the night that he didn't go out for a jog. His was in his Nike track suit, a gift from Nike for their endorsement deal, thermals beneath to keep warm, Nike "Love" sneakers, beanie and his hoodie pulled over his head.

His rubber soles padded quickly against the pavement, his advancing presence felt anothers -- anothers that felt like his own, his own because it was half him. His old man. He saw him talking to the tree and though he was parallel to him but on the sidewalk, he stopped abruptly. "Ares!" He shouted at him as if scolding him. Who was the mature one? Who was the father? Eros had no idea.

Ares didn't have a chance to look up or even realise that someone was in the tree when he heard a familiar voice call out his name.

His real name, which meant someone who knew him outside of a casual fuck buddy or sex acquaintance.

Turning to look at Eros, he slipped his hands into his pockets, offered a smile and wandered up to the boy.

"Why are you running at this time of the night? Is someone chasing you?"

Ares' aura must have been too strong or too closely related to him for him to feel anything beyond his kin, so he didn't notice Eris in the tree either. Instead his attention was on his hold man, his hoodie was pushed off before his hands dipped into the pockets of his sweater. "My family ... obviously." He said in a mumbled tone, as if he didn't want Ares to hear. "Why are you out here ... drunk as a mule?"

"Really? I wasn't chasing you."

The boys wouldn't either, and he wouldn't see why Psyche would be chasing him. So who was Eros referring to?

"Err, I don't know," he said, scratching the back of his head with his poorly-bandaged hand, the ends of the white strip billowing in the wind.

"Needed some fresh air, I guess."

"What does it look like?" Ares retorted dryly. There was no one else in the area besides the two of them, so the god of war thought the answer to that was pretty fucking obvious.

At least, no one that he could sense, and no one he cared about.

"What about you?" Ares asked as he slipped his bandaged hand into his pocket.

He didn't have time for a reply when his head whipped around - which wasn't such a good idea when he could barely stand - and he stumbled forward a bit when he found something; or someone - hanging off his neck.

Morpheus was angry.

He had not felt this way for a long time, had not been pushed to this point for as long as he could remember. He saw red, heard shouts and cries, felt metal under his fingertips though there was nothing there.

Eris. His sister. A flash of gold, a familiar laugh. He thought of her, of finding her.

He moved quietly, slipping through shadows and things that were not there. He was comfortable in the night....in the dark. He felt home.

He heard voices.....voices he eventually realized were there. Voices he knew.

Lethe was afraid.

Oh, she was angry, too. The betrayal of her family, of her pantheon... It was not that she hadn't come to expect such fickleness from her mother who was, at her heart, a creature of discord. She knew that when Eris embraced her in their shared moment of weakness - hugged her so tight, as though letting go would spell the end of everything, and whispered that nothing else would hurt her - she knew that such words were as fleeting and unreliable as most of her mother's promises.

It was not unexpected, but it still stung. It always did.

More than anything, though, she was afraid.

She feared for Marijuana and his family. A part of her had so wanted to rush over to The Highway when she'd heard the news, but she had a horrible, guilty suspicion that she wouldn't be welcome there any more. She, the sister of Marijuana's killers.

And she feared for her own family. What the drug siblings would do to her mother if they got to her first. What they might do to the rest of her pantheon if they did not. Night's children had always fallen under Night's jurisdiction; by tradition, it fell to Nyx and Erebos to discipline their own brood. But these young gods could not know this and Hades, who did, didn't seem to care. Perhaps Eris had pushed them all too far this time.

Although they had agreed to meet in this place, it had taken her a while to find Morpheus in the darkened park. The shadows seemed to changed the landscape, and within each she half-expected to find her mother's laughing face. Eventually, though, she spied her uncle's familiar form, and hurried to catch up with him.

Breathlessly, she began, "Uncle. Morpheus. I--" then broke off suddenly as she, too, became aware of the other voices.

Lethe. She had found him.

Concentrating on nothing but his sister, on coming here and only here and finding her, was wearing on Morpheus. The sight and feel of Lethe beside him made it a little easier. She would help. She….she had begun to speak to him, then stopped. Morpheus was a little delayed in realizing why. The voices. He remembered.

Near the tree. The tree of black ribbons, of tatters that hung and blew softly in the wind…..

“Lethe. Your mother.”

Morpheus moved a little closer, quietly listening. Watching. Reaching. He could not mistake the feeling he knew. He knew the tree? He looked at Lethe. “The tree. Not hiding.”

There was still the problem of the voices….the others. Would they let Eris go? Feel as Hades did? The thought alone caused Morpheus attention to narrow again. His Father. Mother. Eris was theirs. Not his.

Up her tree, Eris peered down at Ares and Eros as they spoke, but her true attention was paid to the presence of her daughter and brother some distance away. She took a last drag on the joint and ground it out into the tree branch with a soft giggle. She sighed, life had seemed so much simpler as a snake. But, as she scrambled down from the tree, she remembered that boring was death, and boring was bad. There was no discord in boring.

Ares was her focus. The bastard had betrayed her - turned her into a snake. Not that it was a form she particularly disliked, but it was the gall of it that pissed her off. With a high-pitched, unearthly wail, she lept onto Ares back and threw both arms around his neck, tightly, as if holding on for dear life.

He heard the rustling before the loud ungodly noise and the weight crashing against his back, so he was more than prepared for the attack.

A hand slipped inbetween her arms, and he tried to peel her off his neck.

Eris.

He smirked.

How convenient.

Ares relaxed, though his hand did not lower.

"We meet again, love. Didcha miss me?"

[ Let's stick to this thread, two ... makes things confusing.]

He was at his father's side and Eris' shifting about in the tress caused him to step away from it; though, her wail and grasp on his father brought him closer again. Eros had been on his toes of days now, he knew he had been very vocal about everything lately and it was bound to get him into some kind of trouble -- so, he was on his toes.

His large palm wrapped into her hair to yank her from atop of his father, a fist at the small of her back was issued with enough force to incapacitate her muscle tension if only for the moment it took to get her off Ares. He peered back towards his old man with a small tilt of his head. "I don't care to get involved with her about all this. The Fates want her, or rather to be handed over to her parents."

Eris yowled and thrashed, kicking and hissing at Eros as he pulled her off of Ares. She launched herself towards the god of love, but felt the crack at the back of her skull and fell silent and still. She slipped in and out of conciousness.

It was convenient that Eros was holding her off - he wasn't sober enough nor did he feel like doing much work tonight.

Hades wanted Eris' head - either on the body or off, and while Ares found it a lot easier if he got her beheaded, he didn't want to get Eros implicated in anything.

"Everyone wants Eris, not just the Fates," Ares replied. He reached out to grab onto the lapels of her shirt.

Whatever anyone said, Hades wanted her head.

And Ares listened to Hades, so he would get her head for him.

Things were so much simpler when he was inebriated beyond redemption.

With one hand firmly grasping onto Eris' clothes, the other slipped into one of his jeans' pockets, where he kept a switchblade always at hand.

Pulling it out, he flicked the blade open and brought it to Eris' neck.

While Cupid was ... well, Cupid, just a god of love to most, he was probably the strongest because he was the most relevant. He just came off his birthday and was still feeling the high, the new ABC SERIES with his name was about to start! Cupid was the hotness at the moment.

Nonetheless, he crouched down beside Eris -- Ares tugging her up by her collar. The hand that didn't hold at hold her by the shoulder grabbed at Ares' wrist [of the hand that held the blade]. "No, I don't answer to him. We aren't all traitors, father. Let her go." He released his father's hand and with a fluid motion ... made sure that Eris wouldn't be walking up for a while, her temple was struck with enough force to knock her out for a bit.

He dropped her to rest limply in the grass, standing and shoving Ares a few steps back. "She's going to the Fates and her parents. We have no right. Hades just wants to prove himself some more, I won't give him the pleasure."

He flinched, and his gaze shifted over to Eros, his hand stopped split seconds away from slitting that throat and sawing that head off.

Traitor. Where had he heard that word before?

Zeus had called him that before. Hera called him that. Athena did too. And now his son. It left a rather bitter taste in his mouth - an unpleasant word to describe an unpleasant person who spent his life doing unpleasant things.

She was unconscious now, lying in the grass. And what stood between him and his objective was his son.

Wasn't it just a little ironic?

He didn't want to fight his son over... over politics. Over one man's desire to take a throne. Over a woman he once loved and probably still did, if he was being truthful to himself.

The metal on the switchblade was sheathed and he slipped it back into his pocket.

"So be it."

Slipping his hands back into his pockets, Ares sighed and started walking away on the dark, quiet footpath, soles of his shoes scraping against the rough stone surface.

Long walk home...

Being more awake than he had been in.....decades? Centuries? Only days? Who knew?.....had made Morpheus' mood increasingly worse by the moment. Everyone wanted his sisters' head....blood....her....and he knew full well she didn't care. Eris. Her sons. Her children. Only Lethe came to his side. Eris would not help.

He watched her launch herself onto the god of War and fight. Struggle. Try to kill herself. Bring more pain. Ares. Morpheus moved quickly, but paused when Eros intervened. Morpheus watched. He had little desire to cause trouble with either, but....his sister.

She was taken care of. No more pain than she'd brought on herself. Less. He waited. He saw it all. Being awake was clarity, was nothing more than what was there….and he loathed it. He wanted to go away again, to be sleeping soundly where none of this was important. Where men could be Kings if they just thought it, and didn’t have to fight and claw their way to it.

Where he wasn’t between his sister and everyone else, including herself.

Where Morpheus could do as he pleased to whomever he pleased.

He walked quietly to where Eris lay and looked down to make certain she was alright. Breathing. Unconscious. In a state where even he couldn’t touch her. Good. He then looked up at Eros, looked up to see Ares leaving.

“I am taking her.”

It bothered him to upset his father but in this ... he was NOT changing his stance. He peered back over his shoulder toward Morpheus when he arrived. Eros stood over Eris, having pushed his father back, he had a leg on either side of Eris' chest in a protective form -- though, he cared nothing of her fate.

He shook his head at Morpheus. "No. I'm taking her to the Fates. You can come with me but ... I'm taking her to Athena and the Fates." He stepped to one side of her, scooping up Eris into his arms, cradling her frame against his chest.

[OOC: Um, the Fates' post was locked to Nyx and Erebos' children. :/ ]

"No." It was the first time Lethe had spoken since Eris had emerged, and though her voice was soft her expression was set in a tight frown.

"You mean well, Eros, and I thank you for your help, but this is not a matter for Athena and the Olympians. My mother is a daughter of Night, and she must be judged by Nyx and Erebos. We are family. Let us take her to them."

Patience. Patience. Patience. Patience.

“Why can I not take her?” Morpheus watched Eros steadily. “She is mine. My family. I do not wish to keep her from what’s coming to her. I want her in the hands of my parents. Hers. Where she belongs.” He wanted to take her, wanted to bring her to where she would be safe and still. Quiet.

Still…..Athena….Fates….at the moment, he could do little better. He would not fight Eros over this.

"I'm sorry, but I will be taking her. Eris is not my problem, I don't care to do anything to her -- if anything I just saved her from far worse then what I could ever do. I'm neither cruel nor malicious, but she was asked for ... and I'm doing my part to help my family. Surely, you can understand that, Morpheus ... Lethe." His attention slipped between the two for only a moment before he gave a small bow of his head as if bidding them goodbye, pivoting toward his right to take her toward the direction of his parked car.

It was too much. Her mother's betrayal, Marijuana's death, and now this, this-- pompous fool trying to snatch Eris away from her family.

"No!" The word escaped from her lips almost as a cry as, without thinking, she reached out and caught his arm.

"You have no right," she insisted. "You say you're obeying the Moirae, and yet my aunts said clearly that she was to be brought to her parents. This is their affair."

He pulled his arm from her grasp with a quick motion, peering over at her with intense eyes. "I promise that we won't do anything to her. You have my word." He gave her a nod and continued on his way.

He would not leave this undone if he'd gone this far.

"We could go with her. Him. Eros."

Lethe's face was tight with anger, seeming almost ghostly pale beneath the dim moonlight. Her jaw was clenched, and she looked close to tears. To find her mother (her betrayer, her family, the killer of her friend, her mother) so quickly, only to have her snatched away by one who was not even born of Night--

But Morpheus was right. It would be almost tempting at this moment to unleash the full strength of her river on this-- bullheadedly stubborn god. To send her waters rushing through him and take all of it into herself, hollow him out, leaving him only a bare shell of a creature, devoid of memory or purpose. At this moment... she almost would have been tempted.

But it would not be right.

And so she met her uncle's eyes, swallowed, and nodded. "I'm not leaving her," she said softly.

It was easier to hold back with Lethe looking at him like that, easier to keep calm when she did. Calmer. Surface calm. Morpheus reached out, almost touching her back as he gestured for her to follow Eros. “We are not leaving her,” he said quietly but firmly. There was no chance he was leaving his sister after having found her, and no chance he was going to see her in anyone’s hands but those of his family.

“We are going. Staying. We have her.”
