Fluffing the pillows one last time Nuclear Power took a step back and admired the colors of her new bedspread. The mosaic of yellow, orange and red were a bit jarring but she liked how vivid they were. Besides it wasn’t like she was going to be sleeping in it she just wanted something nice to look at. She didn’t have a need for sleep lacked the patience or the inclination to lie down or even sit still for hours at a time.
So when she arrived late last night to find the movers long gone and her new apartment filled with boxes she rolled up her sleeves and got right to it. More then anything she had wanted to go out, to explore the place that had called her from halfway across the country. Except that wouldn’t do, not with so many others about – she needed her own place first. A sanctuary a bit of room that was completely hers so instead she opened a window wide and listened to the sounds of the New York streets nine stories below.
Already she liked this place. The sounds had never stopped the streets had never once been quiet and the constant flow of it all had temporarily assuaged any agitation.
Except the boxes were empty now, everything was in it’s own place and Nuclear Power smiled to herself and pronounced the apartment complete. She quickly changed into fresher clothing, jeans, a light sweater and the glasses that seemed to make her more approachable and a quick comb through her hair as she walked out the door.
Once she was out and caught up in the human throng of traffic on the sidewalk Nuclear Power couldn’t keep the smile off her face. She didn’t have a particular direction or destination for the moment and simply walked a few blocks until a corner café caught her eye.
A cup of decaf would do her some good, she decided.
