At first, the new living arrangement had been entirely too good to be true. Being forced back into his school uniform made Sirius feel a little awkward and uncomfortable, but it certainly was tolerable when taken into the context of being in a room that looked identical to their dorm from school, just with an assortment of the marauders he trusted. Of course, it had been missing a key component in his favourite Remus, but it was still infinitely better than any situation he’d found himself in thus far. The addition of liquor had only served to amplify the ‘too good to be true’ part of it, and he’d quickly realized that those words were very accurate.
It was an experiment, obviously. He’d realized that from the start, but even more when he discovered how quickly the alcohol was having an effect. He watched as his mates all became happy and cheerful, but the alcohol didn’t have the same impact on him. Instead, it tore away the barriers he’d built to keep himself functioning, the parts that hid his pain and the damage that had been caused by the death of the Potters, Peter’s betrayal, and his time in prison. He felt sad and old, and he needed Remus.
They’d agreed to meet outside, so he’d departed (with only a bit of stumbling) from Kappa block and made his way there. He waited just beyond the Compound, hands in his pockets, and tried to fight the urge to just become Padfoot. The dog was much easier at handling these moments than he was, after all.
