"James," Lily said softly, and she could feel tears pricking at the corners of her own eyes, because she could barely stand to see James reacting like this. It most certainly wasn't the future that they had always hoped for, the one that they had hoped for.
"I know you did everything you could," Lily said gently, smoothing her hands gently along his face and the curve of his neck. She knew that beyond any doubt. James had never been a coward, and she knew that he would do anything to protect herself and Harry. It had never been his fault that a terrible madman had come after their family, but he had always done everything to make sure that their life was a good one.
"I'm so glad you were all together then," Lily said quietly. "That you were all taking care of each other." She knew -- could see -- that James wouldn't handle her death well, and she knew that Sirius and Remus were probably the only two people in the world who would know what he needed then. She didn't want James to be alone. And she had never wanted her son to grow up without knowing what it was like to be loved -- she knew with such an assortment of people that he would be loved more dearly than any child alive.
