His head in her lap, James let his body sink. "Sweetheart, I am so sorry," he said through his tears. "I should have protected you. I should have stopped him. But it happened so fast. There wasn't anything I could have done."
James stayed like that for what felt like forever, but was actually just a few minutes. Then he pulled his head up and looked at her. "I'm so sorry," he said. "It wasn't supposed to be like that."
After a sniffle or two, he wiped his eyes clean and took a few deep breaths. "There's more," he said, his voice slightly hoarse from crying. "When it happened, I'm still not entirely sure how, but Voldemort was destroyed. Harry destroyed him. So we had to run. Your mum and dad, Sirius and Remus, they helped us escape over the wall to the Wilds. That's where we've been living."
