"It's - probably better if you did know." Otherwise all his words made less sense. Sirius closed his eyes for just a second and then his fingers curled into the back of James' shirt. "My brother Regulus was born to be unwound, and I was set to take over the family name. But I was a Gryffindor, I didn't share their values, and then someone let it slip that Remus was a werewolf, and they're automatically marked to be unwound. I wasn't happy. I caused a lot of fights with my family and they decided to change everything. Since I wasn't fit to be a proper Black, I would just be unwound as the family contribution to society and Regulus would take my place. It happens when you're only sixteen...so we left. I heard there was a safe camp somewhere, so I wanted to save Remus, and myself. Being unwound is basically like dying, only I guess it's worse because you're not really dead."
Sirius felt like it wasn't a good justification, but that was the truth. "So we weren't around when you both...died. I don't even know what happened, still. They called it an accident, but I never believed that." James and Lily would not have died in a mere accident.
"It's fucked up," he gave a light laugh and his fingers loosened slightly. Seeing James' face, the calm mixed with the unwillingness to give up hope or happiness. Yes, he could definitely see his James becoming a great man. He deserved it. "If I do go back, even if I don't remember any of this, I want to try to fix things."
