Severus was very sad and very frightened. He’d been the same way when he’d arrived, but spending time with Miss Lily had helped significantly. She was so sweet to him, singing him songs and telling him stories to make him feel like he was important to her. He wasn’t really sure that he was, but the fact that she tried was more than anyone had ever done for him in the past. He wasn’t accustomed to that maternal interaction, and it was terribly pleasant. He’d felt that Lily was sad, though. He wasn’t sure why, but he had a feeling that it had to do with the man who was missing, Miss Lily’s husband. He wanted to know why he was gone, but he had a feeling it had to do with him.

Still, he’d been a bit happy when he’d woken up, feeling warm and pleased. But then he’d had to choose from those bowls. He’d picked the one with Hogwarts, having always wanted to go there, but that had been a mistake.

So now he was sad again, and frightened too. He didn’t want to be someone that everyone hated. All he’d ever wanted was love.

He didn’t have a key to get back into the unit, and Lily wasn’t there yet, so he’d curled up in a chair in the common area, a book on his lap that he really wasn’t reading.

This whole situation was grating, hard, on James's nerves. He hadn't liked it last night, and he didn't like it any more today. He felt like his hands were tied; he could put up with Snape's presence in their room, or he could run away from it, and choosing the latter option had put some distance between them that he didn't like at all. He wanted to fix it, badly, but he was dreading the conversation too, dreading the explanation he was going to have to give. He didn't want to explain the way he felt aloud because that meant examining all of his emotions himself, and a very large part of him wanted to shove them all away and never think about them again.

Nevertheless, he was headed back to Omicron to see if he could find her, when the sight of Snape in the common area made him pause. It had been really strange, talking to the boy earlier; as much as James resented being put in the position of his guardian (of a sort), it actually had nothing to do with Snape personally and everything to do with the fact that he'd had zero say in the matter. The boy had been put in his room, their room, without James even being consulted, and he was much more of a stranger to James than he was to Lily.

Yet, he wasn't, because he had met Snape at this age in the playground world-- and had actually rather liked him. Had even been territorial over him. The scientists had probably assumed he would be alright with the arrangement because of that, and the fact was that he would have said yes anyway. But he felt certain that Snape hadn't had any more say in the matter than he did, and at this age, he might even be enjoying it even less than James. He certainly hadn't liked that James had been missing.

And although the whole thing made James feel stifled and put upon, he needed to just grit his teeth and bear it, because there wasn't any way out of it. Lily wasn't going to ask Snape to leave, and that wasn't really what James wanted anyway. He just wanted to have a say in how it all worked, and the only way to do that was to be present, be part of it, not run away from it.

He approached the boy, and took a seat in the chair next to him, taking in the sight of his old rival with a benign but slightly bemused expression. "Hi," he said, managing a slight smile. "I'm James."

Because of the role he’d played in the memory, he’d not actually seen his own memories themselves. Really, that was rather for the best, considering how much the experience had impacted him as it was. Seeing his life before him would’ve startled him further, and he really wasn’t sure he knew how to deal with that. Still, he’d known as the adult version of him that there was love for Harry’s mother. He could feel it in the way that seeing Harry’s eyes had comforted him even though the snake’s bite hurt so badly.

But knowing that he loved Lily and actually loving Lily in the same way was impossible for him now. In his 8 ½ year old mind, that love was far more maternally-based. He wasn’t yet capable of the sort of near-obsession he’d feel as a teen and adult, which made the present situation far less awkward for him now. Of course, he still felt terribly anxious.

The fact that he hadn’t witnessed his own memories also worked in favour of keeping him from knowing the relationship between himself and James Potter, though he had felt a distaste as an adult when thoughts of him had come. He didn’t really know what to make of that, so contextualizing it with the fact that James had chosen to sleep elsewhere had led him to the conclusion that James really didn’t like him much.

James had said otherwise in his journal, though, so now he was just curious and confused. He looked up as someone sat near him, tensing a little because it was a man. He didn’t really like being around men. The introduction eased a bit of that, though. “Hello James,” he said. “You came back.”

"I did," James agreed. "I'm not going to stay away anymore. So we should probably get to know each other, since we're going to be staying together, yeah?"

He could tell that the boy was tense, but compared to the reaction he was used to getting from Snape, it was pretty minor. He had been able to speak fairly cordially with the older Snape who had been here recently, the one time that they had actually interacted at their proper ages, and they'd gotten along rather famously when they'd been aged down. But this boy didn't know him yet, at all. And he didn't really know very much about this version of Snape, either. He didn't even know which version it was.

"Has Lily explained all the different worlds to you?" he asked, after a brief pause. "Has she told you which one you're from?"
