Who: Duke & Marek
What: The rescue is complete!
When: Immediately after Duke gets Marek out of the lake
Where: Great Lake to start
Warnings: TBD

Duke, when sober, had a good sense of time. He'd been at the bottom of the lake, ready to take Marek up (which honestly just made him laugh, knowing that he'd been the one he had to save) when he paused. Not everyone was there. Not everyone had been saved. And Duke hated to think that what if they were actually in danger. He couldn't leave anyone behind, no matter what team they were supposed to be on. Once it looked like everyone was at least on their way, when he really didn't want to risk too much more time, he finally went back up, kicking the webbed feet he now had.

The air felt entirely different to him when he surfaced. It was an odd experience but the gills disappeared only minutes later as he dragged Marek out of the water with him. When he could finally breathe and, more importantly, speak, and the rest of the rescued people were stirring awake, he slapped a hand on Marek's chest.

"Oi, nap time's over." Duke was in the perfect mood for Marek, mostly due to the confindence that stemmed from saving him.

Marek had not wanted to participate in the tournament. It was too similar to the one that had taken place in his last year at Hogwarts, and his name hadn't been chosen from the goblet; he hadn't even bothered to try, this time round. He had known how the drill would go, when he had gotten called to the Deputy Headmaster's office, and he hadn't planned on going along with it.

But then he was regaining consciousness, on his back on the platform that had been set up beside the lake, and looking up at... Duke. For some reason that made him burst out laughing, despite the sulky mood he'd been in when he'd gone into the lake.

"So I'm your damsel in distress?" he said, amused by the ridiculousness of it all. "You enjoyed that, didn't you."

Duke was already entertained by the situation so seeing Marek laugh only encouraged his own laughter. He stood up completely and stretched a bit, certainly not in the best shape, no matter how nice he looked.

"I guess so," he let out a heavy sigh and reached an arm out, offering his hand to help Marek up. "Of course I did. I get to be the hero, a role no one can refuse, and hopefully you're charmed by it." Duke's grin made him look like he honestly believed this, but he really could only hope.

Marek took the offered hand, and got to his feet. As he moved, he became more aware of the fact that he was still fully clothed, and that his clothes were soaking wet. He ran a hand through his wet hair, and smirked at Duke.

"I knew it. You play at being the bad guy, but you really want to be the hero." He considered this, and then tilted his head thoughtfully. "I suppose this is the part where I show you how appreciative I am, isn't it?"

Duke's grin melted into a soft smile once Marek was up and more obviously soaked, dripping onto the already wet platform. His head dropped at first as he let out a laugh that edged on embarrassed. Marek had it right. He wanted to be the good guy in the end.

"Why yes, that's usually how these things go." At least that thought had his attention. Duke reached out and curled his fingers around Marek's chin, gently pulling him in. "I know how you can start."

The lack of an answer said more, really, than any answer could have. It wasn't much of a surprise, considering he'd confessed to working against the Death Eaters, but Marek was curious now, about how Duke had even become a Death Eater in the first place. He supposed they had that in common, really; the desire to be a good guy, that was. The main reason why Marek acted like an asshole all the time these days was because he was so used to being treated that way.

He let Duke pull him in, but didn't kiss him yet, eyes flicking down to the other man's lips before meeting his gaze again. "You are aware," he said quietly, mouth just a hairsbreadth away from Duke's "That we have an audience, right?" He'd seen the stands behind the platform, with the scientists, and it seemed likely that Melinda was in there somewhere. Not that he would object to a snog right here, but since he'd planned on his appreciation involving getting them out of their wet clothes and sufficiently warmed up from the lake... "Do you have more heroics to do for this task, champion, or can I steal you away for a bit?"

Duke honestly wasn't sure how much he wanted Marek to know. Well, he knew he wanted Marek to find out everything in its entirety, only he wasn't so confident how that side of him would be received. Usually he didn't care if someone rejected some part of him. But Mareks, it seemed, were good at making him care more. They were addicting even if they tried to be too hard, or were unavailable.

"I don't care," Duke responded, voice soft enough for their proximity. Anyone and everyone could watch them kiss; in fact, he preferred it that way. He felt the desire to actually show Marek off. Chuckling at those last words, Duke leaned in and kissed him light enough to tease. "You can have me for as long as you want."

Marek raised his eyebrows, but despite himself, the corners of his mouth had quirked up into a smile. He returned the light kiss, nipping teasingly at Duke's lower lip, and curled a hand into Duke's soaked shirt to lead him away from the crowd. He didn't know if they were going to make it back to the castle, but he ought to get them away before clothes came off, for Melinda's sanity if nothing else.

He was probably going to be cursing himself for this later, or blaming it on whatever spell the scientists had used to knock him out, or the lack of oxygen under the lake.
