Who: Jamesknap & Lilyxbwl
What: roomie discussion of roomie things.
When: Monday
Where: their little house in ancient Greece.
Warnings: probably not.

The sun was bright, the sky was blue, and James's mood was fantastic. He had been smiling all day, even while he was in training. Horse racing wasn't very easy, in large part because he was used to being the animal rather than being a rider, but he did have a knack for bonding with four-hoofed creatures, so it wasn't going terribly badly. He also had been hanging around with the people training for boxing and pankration, because he liked watching Lily and Harry and Remus being awesome, but was glad he'd decided not to compete against them, too. He wanted them to win, and he wanted to win, and if they were in the same competition, those two desires would be a little conflicting.

And he had quite enough of conflicting desires at the moment, so he'd decided to spare himself any more, even if it was a minor one. James wanted to minimize the stress of their situation as much as possible, even though he shouldered quite a lot of it himself. Things were getting better, but every step of progress still came with its own new complications; namely, the fact that he felt like he was deserting his roommate by wanting to stay with his wife. He was fairly sure she'd understand, but it still meant having the conversation.

He'd been out all day, and had been at Lily's the night before, but he headed back to the house he and Cakemonster had taken here in Greece now, so that could happen. He looked around when he entered, and grinned when he saw her. "See?" he said, gesturing to his head. "The brilliant Potter hair is intact. Nothing to worry about."

And so it was. Admittedly it wasn't really something that Lily had been worried about, but as he entered the house, Lily looked up from what she'd been reading - something she'd gotten in town - and shook her head, rolling her eyes. She let out a chuckle and sat back in her chair. "Well thank Merlin for small miracles," she smirked. "I think if your hair got any more messy it might overtake the rest of you."

Whatever he wanted to talk about, she knew that it was significant. He usually just walked in and started talking to her. She could think of only one time when he'd actually made an appointment of sorts. Still, whatever it was, it had him in a good mood. Thus she had the feeling that it had something to do with Lily. And that was always a good thing. Especially since more members of their family kept appearing. How could it be anything but?

She'd chosen to wear the long-dresslike clothing that had been supplied, something she still couldn't pronounce, having been trained in Latin not Greek, bit it was something she'd worn for a costume party one year. So familiarity helped. "I probably don't need to ask, but have you seen Harry today?" she held down a chuckle at the thought. It was this easygoing sort of conversation that she'd gotten used to over the last few months.

"I've always let it run free like a wild beast," James said, amused. "It hasn't overtaken me yet, so I think I'm safe." Chuckling, he ran his hand through his hair. "And technically, no, I haven't seen Harry. Because he isn't looking like himself, at the moment."

He sat down on the sofa nearby, and grinned at her. He was wearing his own toga, which he rather liked; really, every time he wore a toga, things seemed to go well for him. The last time he'd worn one was on his first Halloween with Lily, and that night had been amazing.

His mood was so good right now, he had been savoring it all day. Especially since this place had a way of taking away his good moods at a moment's notice, he felt he should cherish every moment of it. This conversation wasn't likely to put much of a damper on it, but even if it was, he wasn't going to put it off. "So, I wanted to ask you," he said. "Did we ever talk about what would happen when my wife wanted to live with me again? When I was here before, I mean."

"Well its something to be on the watch for," she replied, tilting her head. "They still haven't come up with a cure for that. If it happens then you'll be out of luck!" Oh Harry... A smirk curled at the side of her mouth. "Well I did warn you. Of course, if he'd wanted to know what it was like to be female, he could have just asked." she laughed. "There's an argument going on in his journal that made me laugh so hard I nearly cried!"

Just like there was a club Lily there was a Club H. Potter. And from everything she'd seen of them, they seemed tightly knit. But sometimes arguing with yourself brought the best results. At the root of it she just hoped that Harry was having fun. When he'd asked her for the potion for his birthday, her first thought had been 'what's the harm.' Then she'd reminded herself that this was James' son, and had done it anyway! There was no question that she'd made the right decision.

Lily stood up from the table, stretching. The house they'd been assigned was comfortable. Apparently they were just a few among the many that had found housing during these games. It was a drawing point. It was a mastery of camouflage by the Scientists. Making it so they wouldn't stand out in this way. She did have to give them points for that.

James' mood was a bit contagious. There was nothing chasing them, nothing eating them, nothing trying to kill them. It was a pretty good world they found themselves in. Wine was a plenty, the water wasn't safe to drink, and it was nice outside. And it was on this backdrop that his question caused her a small smile, amused by it. She'd wondered when this was going to come up. "Oh we discussed it. Especially after Lily arrived the first time. But that was very early on." She nodded. "I think what we agreed to was that we were going to clone you. And if that didn't work or we had opposition because too many Jameses would potentially lead to chaos, you'd figure out what you were doing and I'd take up with a million cats."

"Every boy wants to know what it's like to be a girl," James said, amused. He paused. "Well, except maybe the gay ones. Let me put that another way. Every boy that's fascinated with boobs has wondered what it'd be like to have their own."

He chuckled, and lay back on the couch, propping his head up on the pillow so he could still look at her. Reclining couches were awesome; he really liked the Greeks' style. He would get to travel to Greece at some point, he was sure, although it wouldn't be anything like this.

It was a serious discussion, but he didn't mind at all that she'd led into it less than seriously. He burst out laughing, hands resting folded on his chest. "I rather like being the only Party James," he said, "Even if I'm not the only James Potter. But you don't have to turn into a cat lady on my account." More seriously, he continued, "Ideally, I'd love to have everyone under one roof. You, her, Harry, Remus, and now everyone from my future too... but that doesn't seem to be the way the compound works."

Lily tried to hold it back, but the laugh escaped anyway. She shook her head, trying to regain her composure. "All boys, huh?" she shot him a look, unable to hold down the smirk. "If I ever see him again then I'll have to have a long talk with Wesley..." That would be interesting.

Despite the tone that she'd put on this conversation, there was a serious undertone that didn't go beyond her perception. At first this hadn't been something they'd thought would happen, but now, now was different. They'd been working towards this! And the fact that this was being brought up was progress! Obvious progress!

"Well it doesn't make much of a difference, aside from polyjuice we don't have the facilities to clone anyone, and I'm not certain that we want to give the scientists anymore ideas." She tilted her head, taking a seat again, leaning forward, leaving the comedy behind. "One of the problems with it being a compound like this and not actual flats. You can't do renovations." It was true. Back then they'd been talking about putting in a staircase. "Sometimes we can't have things layed out the way we'd like. But it isn't like you'd be that far," she pointed out. "Remus is in another block and you poke him constantly."

"Well, why not?" James said. "I mean, when I was little, I thought boobs were weird. But I also thought Lilys were stupid and annoying when I was younger, too. Funny how that works, isn't it?"

It definitely did mean progress that they were having this conversation. It meant that his life, his goals, were moving forward. It didn't mean that he was leaving behind the people he'd picked up along the way, though. Despite anyone's ideas to the contrary, the Lily in front of him now had never been a replacement for the one he'd lost in 1981, nor had any of the Siriuses been intended to replace his estranged best mate. He had plenty of room in his heart for them all, and would have adored the alternate versions of them just as much even if he'd met them while happily married and still close to his friend. The fact that they'd been here for him while he was going through the roughest time of his life yet had only endeared them to him more.

"No, I wouldn't be far away at all," he said. "And you're not getting rid of me that easily, Cakemonster." He grinned at her, and then paused. "And I'm not suggesting him as a replacement for me, by any means-- because I can't be replaced, and neither can you-- but you may want to consider the James from your world as a roommate, if you can get the scientists to allow it. I happen to know he's not particularly fond of living on his own, either, and Cakemonsters make excellent roommates. Except when they eat your cake, of course."

"I take it that's about the same time you thought that girls had cooties?" she smirked. "And you all wonder why females can never figure you out. You blokes are bloody confusing, you know?"

Lily paused for a moment before letting out a laugh. "Oh I don't think that I could get rid of you, even if I wanted to." She shot him an amused look. "James Potters are traditionally very hard to shake. Now whether that's luck or a result of pure determination, I have yet to reach a verdict on."

She shook her head, getting a bit more serious. He was talking about her rooming with James. Admittedly Lily didn't like the idea of being on her own, she'd done that a bit too much when they'd first been taken and it had gotten to the point when she'd just wound up hanging around their unit anyway. In other words being on her own didn't really sit well. Still, that suggestion was something of a surprise for her. "We do! But in my defense, I did replace your cake with Christmas Cake," she pointed out. "So you've been talking then?" she asked with a small smile. "How does he feel about being one of the oldest of Club J. Potter?"

There was a lot for the two of them to catch up on. They'd started but there was something that he wouldn't say. And whatever it was, she was terrified because the possibilities seemed so endless.

"No, you've got it backwards," James said, amused. "We're very simple. It's you females that make everything confusing." He grinned. "Sounds like you've got me figured out pretty well, actually."

It was true, it was very hard to shake him. Nigh on impossible, for the people he was determined to be around. Even with memory charms and years of distance in the way, he was still insisting on being part of his Lily's life, and Sirius's as well. James never left his people alone, not even when his presence was part of the problem.

"You did," he agreed, "And it was delicious." He grinned. "Yeah, I talked to him when he first showed up, and then we ended up in the gym together. I like meeting an older me, it's proof that I'm going to age well." In even those two meetings, he'd talked to that James more than he'd talked to the others; they had more common ground than James had found with the others, though he liked them well enough.
