Who: Lily Evansdiv & James Potterdiv
What: Time for his Christmas gift.
Where: Hospital Wing
When: Friday, "Christmas"
Warning: Fake images of violence, etc
Status: In progress

The rest of her presents had been drawn, painted, colored, and otherwise made into works of art, but Lily had known what she wanted to give James. This gift was harder than any painting, and to do what she was doing was no walk in the park, of the pleasant or unpleasant variety. This place had been a month without it, and that made Lily a bit antsy as she got ready. Had it changed? Had she changed? Would it be worse than usual? But for the first time, James was coming with her. Time together had taught her a great deal about him, and he had had even more years to come to understand her. But the fear landscape was something beyond private. Her heart beat was already elevated as they stood in the hospital wing, but Lily pushed it down and calmed herself.

She looked over at James with a smile. Perhaps it would be better with him at her side. Lily knew she could do it, alone or with company. And as nervous as it made her feel to know what he was going to see - including, likely, himself - Lily knew they loved each other, and that was stronger than her deepest fears or his. That thought locked in mind, Lily drank her potion. "Ready?" she asked. If they waited too long, no, Lily would still do it. But waiting for something unpleasant wasn't her style.

This was not James's idea of how to spend Christmas morning. The last Christmas he had spent with Lily, Harry had just been born. He was only days old, but they were at home together. Lily was tired but in good spirits, and Harry had slept most of the day, but it had been the best Christmas that James ever had. Sirius, Remus and Peter had called over, and their parents, and everyone had oohed and awwed over their little Christmas miracle. James cooked, they exchanged gifts, and he fell asleep on the couch with his wife and child cooconed beside him.

Now, Lily wanted him to go into her fear landscape with her. The prospect made James uneasy, but underneath that he knew that there was a sense of intimacy involved. Lily was laying her fears bare for him. There had to be a reason.

James was about to tell her that she didn't have to do this, had nothing to prove, but she drank the potion. James followed suit and took her hand, raising it to his mouth and pressing a kiss to the back of it. "Let's see what Lily Evans is so afraid of."

It was important, taking James with her to experience this. The chance was not likely to come again, and had she even only the chance to do it herself, Lily would have. She was partly amazed and disappointed with herself that she hadn't already done this sharing with James before in his time. But Lily pushed aside those thoughts because matters would get unpleasant soon enough. James was also comforting, being with her. She kept his hand after she kissed it and stepped into the space set up for them.

"More than you, six," Lily replied back lightly as the room shifted. Everything was made of dirty, and more fell down on their heads, only lightly at first. But more fell down the sides. Their feet sank into the dirt, and Lily's heart rate shot up. She had to climb, she had to get out. Her hand dropped James's as she tried to climb.

"I'm too stupid to be afraid of more than six things. That would require far too much thought," James joked, his words trailing off as the room changed. James wrinkled his nose at the smell. His glasses were nearly knocked off by falling debris, and it was as he was adjusting them that he noticed how his shoes were being sucked into the ground by a sticky, muddy substance. James didn't feel the panic that Lily did, only mild disgust at how filthy everything was, but when he saw her scramble to climb up the mound of dirt, he acted instinctively. James threaded his fingers together and gave her a boost up, then threw himself at the wall of dirt and found purchase in the uneven surface. He clambered up and tugged on Lily's hand to pull her along, dimly aware that the key to overcoming this disgusting mess was to get on top of it, literally.

"Come on, Red, up you get," he growled, pulling her along.

His self-deprecating statements usually made Lily roll their eyes, but they often had an effect anyway. That did little once the panic set in, and her focus went to the dirt around them. James helped her climb up, even as her handholds and footholds crumbled beneath her and attempted to drag her with them. The dirt itself did not bother her, but the way it was hard to see the top, to see the light, was. As long as it had been since she had been through her landscape, Lily's practice kicked in, and James's calm help worked too.

They climbed up into a room with a glass wall. There was no door. On the other side there was a uniformed woman, not in Dauntless gear, but not distinct either. Farther away sat her father, in his bright Amity clothes - red trousers, with dirt around the ankles like when he had been with the vines all day, a yellow shirt buttoned up, with the sleeves pushed up, simple shoes, and a hat to protect from the sun. He stood in front of a wall, his wrists bound together, but he did not try to escape. Lily knew what was going to happen. She pounded against the glass, as her father did nothing to escape. The landscape flickered, and it was Harry sitting there, who looked like the Harry's she had met here. It flickered back and forth between the two until she had simply pressed against the glass and said goodbye, recoiling back at the gunshot.

Then they were back in London, except Lily was being kicked out. She was no longer Dauntless. That fear, this time, became easier to conquer, perhaps because so many people simply had no factions at the compound. There was a way to live, as hard as that was to see.

The next fear, however, Lily gritted her teeth for. They were in a sparring room, and now there were two Jameses. One was a part of the landscape and began sparring with her, lightly goading her on with encouragement, in the ways that had angered her before. They weren't even always like James, they were just hurtful statements, angering statements. Lily was trying to hold back, but one of her punches went through anyway, drawing blood. Her hands went up, as if to end the sparring, but the not-James lunged right at her. Lily defended herself, firmly. Again it drew blood and her heartrace increased even more.
