Sirius had been relieved when he had first seen Lily, and that was the truth of it. He had thought her unhurt. But the more he heard her talk, the harder it was for Sirius. It was clear that James and Remus had set some kind of trap, and it was clear that Lily had fallen right into the middle of it. And Sirius hated all of it. He felt exposed, and he felt defenseless -- this was everything that he had spent the last six years working against.
He had left Lily. Which seemed like a rash mistake, but he knew where James was. He had told him so in the journals. And if he could take care of the problem right then, there was no need to have to worry about her safety any longer. He had no doubt that he could defeat James. They'd played at dueling together when they were younger; Sirius knew all the flaws in his defenses -- and Sirius had spent years training on every Dark Art he could find in his father's library.
It wasn't hard to spot James when he came across the courtyard -- looking vastly different than the hazy figure in his memory, but unmistakable all the time. He didn't give James a chance to defend himself. He rushed in, fist cocked, knuckles hellbent on finding James' nose. Because he had every intention of using his arsenal of spells, but for the time being, he needed something more tactile.
