Who: James & Remus (knap)
What: catching up on the Lily & Sirius situation
When: Sunday night
Where: back on compound, cafeteria
Warnings: emotions, probably.
The more he learned about their situation, the more James learned that it was more complicated than he possibly could have imagined. He found himself wondering whether the Lestranges had realized how deeply their tactics would cut, whether they understood the damage they were doing. Even before the latest news had come out, he'd been wondering privately whether Peter had been involved somehow; one of his theories was that his friend being the one to convince the Lestranges not to kill Sirius and Lily, out of guilt, out of a sense of mercy. But now this all seemed so terribly personal, like it had been specifically designed to tear all of them apart if they were ever found.
Damned if they did, damned if they didn't.
Or at least that seemed to be the strategy, the idea behind the whole thing. James was still optimistic; he still had faith in his friends, in himself, in their ability to fix this. He definitely believed that things would, eventually, be fixed between himself and Lily, and for Lily and Harry, that they would be a family again. Sirius was still an unknown, but a lot of things could be accomplished by simply not giving up. That had always been James's strategy.
And they needed to share information, to not keep things from each other, to smooth out the misinformation. He was not looking forward to sharing what he'd just learned with Remus, but he couldn't keep it a secret; it was probably best coming from him, anyway. It certainly would be better than Remus finding out the same way that James had found out Lily was afraid of him. That had been heartwrenching, and he'd handled it badly; he'd pushed at her until she exploded. If Sirius accused Remus of being an out of control werewolf, though... knowing Remus as he did, James had a feeling his wolfy friend would just shut down, and break. He needed to be prepared for it, as much as was possible.
James was the type to jump right into difficult conversations and stick them out to the end, but he was planning on easing Remus gently into this one. He made easy conversation through making dinner and through most of the eating of it, so that Remus could enjoy his soup, so that he wouldn't lose his appetite and let his dinner go to waste. Nearing the bottom of his bowl, James took a spoonful of soup, swallowed, and sighed in a mixture of contentment and resignation. "So," he said, looking at his closest friend, "I told you that I need to tell you something, Remus. I found out what Lily and Sirius have been made to believe about you. And... I'm sorry, mate, you're really not going to like it."
