Entry tags:character: charlie weasley, character: percy weasley

Who: Percy Weasley & Charlie Weasley (and NPC Lucy)
What: Tailoring robes and family visits
Where: Percy's home
When: Tuesday, October 7 (backdated)
Status: Closed / Ongoing

Percy sat by the window, a book open on his lap but left unread while his attention was on the piano on the other side of the room. Lucy was practicing her scales, and though he often pretended for her sake that he was busy reading, he much preferred watching and listening to her. Her tiny fingers tickled along the ivory pieces, at times tentative and others confident, yet despite her youth, he could already hear the makings of an excellent pianist.

Lucy's piece finished and Percy stopped pretending to read his book long enough to applaud her work. She turned around and gave him a glare, reminding him that he was supposed to be 'reading'. He pretended an apologetic look and went back to his act, allowing her to get back to her music. His mother had once seen that look on Lucy's face and told him it was exactly the look he used to give the twins.

He supposed the apple really did fall close to the tree.

Charlie had spent much of the day catching up on bits and pieces around the flat before doing some grocery shopping and spending time playing with a delighted Echo. The beauty of his off-days being week days meant that things were usually open when he wanted them.

He gave Percy a while to get home from work and settled and then headed over to his house, apparating in close to the front door an knocking. Hopefully between them they could get him suitably dressed for the event. He could just hear a few plinks of the piano keys as he waited and grinned, knowing that had to be Lucy and not Percy.

Lucy's playing paused when the knock came at the door. "Who's that, Daddy?" she asked with wide-eyed curiosity.

"Ah, I believe that should be Uncle Charlie here to-" Before he'd even finished speaking, she jumped up from the piano bench and sprinted to the front door.

He took his time getting up, already hearing the door being pulled open with a loud Uncle Charlie!, and he had no doubt that Lucy was currently throwing herself at her uncle for a hug and maybe a pick up off the ground. Whatever his problems with his siblings in the past, they were all loving to Lucy, and Percy couldn't ask for anything more.

He stepped into the hall and looked toward them, a fond smile upon his face. "Good evening, Charlie. I see you've been properly greeted. How was your day?"

Charlie could tell from the clatter of feet that Percy wasn't the one likely to make it to the door first and he was proved right when Lucy yanked it open and launched herself at him. He grinned and managed to scoop her up before she barrelled into him. "Hello, Lucy-loo. I could hear you doing piano practice, have you been working hard?" he asked, returning her enthusiastic hug before setting her back on her feet. He would have loved to twirl her but his leg didn't really allow him to do it fast enough to be entertaining any more.

"Hi, Percy. I like this sort of greeting, I'll admit," he said, beaming at Lucy. "And my day was good. Some chores, some shopping, bit of fun with Echo, and now I get to see my favourite Lucy... and her daddy too." He smirked slightly at Percy. Not that he didn't like his brother, but Lucy was great.

Percy watched his daughter hug her uncle, and he could tell from the look on her face she wanted to grab onto Charlie's leg and hold on. She didn't, thankfully, as Percy had taught her that it could hurt Charlie by accident. Since he'd explained to her about her uncle's leg, she'd done her best not to do anything that would put Charlie off-balance or make walking difficult for him, even though at times she likely wanted nothing more than to hold on and not let go.

"I don't know," he said with a perfectly serious voice. "Maybe people don't like being accosted by a garden gnome the moment they visit our home, hmmm?"

Lucy glared up at him, but her eyes smiled - she knew his style of teasing and could sometimes be nearly as sarcastic as Percy. "I'm not a garden gnome, Daddy. You can't toss me over the fence, your back would hurt."

He couldn't help but laugh, and waved his brother inside. He knew he was far from his siblings' favourite, and he'd accepted long ago that they enjoyed Lucy's company more than his own. As long as Lucy was loved, however, then it didn't matter what they thought of him. "There are such advantages to being self-employed, I am often told. Come in, would you like something to drink or a snack? Or did you want to see the robes immediately?"

"She's got a point. Plus I think you're a bit less bitey than the gnomes tend to be," Charlie said, amused. "Or at least I hope you are, because biting is really not good manners."

He walked in, smiling. He did enjoy visiting family, especially when there were children around. "It's less the self-employment and more the fact Monday and Tuesday function as my weekend. And I wouldn't say no to tea or coffee, please." Charlie rarely said no to caffeine, it was definitely his preferred vice.

"So, how was your day?" he asked, directing his question to Percy, but perfectly happy to listen to answers from either Percy or Lucy.

At Charlie's biting comment, Lucy playfully gnashed her teeth in an effort to appear menacing, but stopped with a single look from Percy.

"Tea it is," he said leading the way toward the kitchen. He didn't bother attempting to talk about his day because the moment the question was asked, Lucy started with a lengthy and detailed description that could rival some of Percy's lectured on broomstick regulations.

"It was very good," she started, taking Charlie's hand and trying to be gentle as she pulled him after her father. "Daddy made me pancakes with fruit and syrup, and then we went to work and he let me make a wish at the fountain, and did you know the fountain is younger than me? Daddy says the old one was mean and ugly. And then we took the lift, and Mrs. Fitzhume from Games and Sports came to ask Daddy about some brooms, and she must have said something bad because then Daddy looked at her like he did when Uncle George turned his hair blue-"

"Lucy," Percy said warningly.

Her only reaction was to quickly change the subject. "And then I did my homework, and Daddy says my letters are much better and he might start teaching me runes soon, and I want to go play with Victoire and Dominique soon-"

"Lucy, why don't you go upstairs and get the bag on my bed, and after tea you can help me make your uncle look pretty. It's a very important job."

She nodded excitedly and unceremoniously let go of her uncle's hand so that she could do as instructed. Percy sighed and offered his brother an apologetic look.

"I'm sorry about that. She can be long-winded when she's excited. Please tell me I was never that bad?"

Charlie was happy to be 'led' to the kitchen by a happily chattering Lucy. He was about to speak at several points but never quite managed to open his mouth in time. He almost laughed when she mentioned George turning Percy's hair blue, George still came up with some pretty amusing stunts even though he was hurting.

He winced slightly at the idea of Lucy making him 'pretty', somehow. As long as it only involved a lot of trying on robes he'd be fine. He had enough glitter on Queer nights, and that was purely by accident.

"It's okay, I love that she's so excited. Although, sorry, you could be that bad sometimes," he said, sounding apologetic. "If it's any consolation you weren't the only one, none of us were what you'd call quiet."

Percy was quite pleased to see that Charlie had as much difficulty getting a word in edgewise as Percy did at times. He usually did not want to interrupt, but with Lucy, it was absolutely necessary when she was like that.

He caught the wince and smiled internally. He would make certain that Lucy's 'makeover' would be reasonable and controlled by Percy himself, otherwise who knew what Charlie would go home looking like. He started the kettle and took out two cup and saucer sets and his favourite blend of loose tea.

"What can I say, she lovers her uncle," he said serenely. "And very true, few of us could have been considered quiet. It's just an entirely different experience seeing it from this perspective." And it was a perspective that Percy enjoyed more than he ever thought he would. "So, now that we have a few minutes of peace and tranquility, this ball... it's not the sort of thing you need a date for, is it? Because if so, that would be terribly uncomfortable." he asked, his face wrinkled in skepticism. "It's intriguing, usually I hear about these sorts of things through the Ministry grapevine."

"I love her too," he said, walking over and taking a seat at the kitchen table. "And I guess I saw a bit more of it than you, but probably not quite the same as being a parent," he said with a shrug.

"Honestly, the invite didn't say 'and guest' so I didn't bother rounding up a stray friend, but I haven't a clue what it's for or anything. It was just this invitation that turned up. And I didn't have anything else on so I though fu- fudge it, why not." He caught himself just in time, conscious that Lucy might well be on her way back. "Merlin only knows if I can still do formal dances with my new leg though."

Percy looked at his brother with a raised eyebrow. "That bit more would be me, and I was a perfect child," he joked, pointing in Charlie's direction with a spoon. "Though I think since Lucy was born, I've grown eyes in the back of my head. I suddenly know how Mum and Dad did it all those years, only I just have the one."

He nodded. The mystery of the ball fascinated him, perhaps for no other reason than because he was not himself invited. He did, however, appreciate Charlie's attempt to curb his language. "I have every confidence that you will muck up your dancing just as well as you did before you lost the leg." The kettle whistled - it had been charmed to speed up the boiling process - and Percy set to filling the teacups with water and leaves.

Lucy finally returned, carefully carrying a long, flat bag which she put down on the table with great attention. She then leaned up to whisper in Charlie's ear, though the 'whisper' was loud enough to be heard across the kitchen. "These are Daddy's pretty clothes. He says they're just for special parties at the Ministry, but he sometimes wears them when we play Princess and Advisor for tea parties."

Charlie snorted lightly. "Perce, hate to break it to you, but you weren't a perfect child. Not quite." Charlie definitely remembered some bits of less-than-perfect behaviour from Percy, but he had to admit he'd mostly been very well behaved. "I seem to just be developing a sense of which drunk person is most likely to throw up. Far less entertaining, but occasionally saves the staff from extra cleaning time."

He took the exceedingly mature route of sticking his tongue out at Percy. A little hex to goose him was tempting, but he doubted Percy would take it well. "I'm a perfectly passable dancer, or I was. I'm just trying to remember if Mrs Capper is the type to be helpful or annoyed if I fall over in the middle of the dance because I got my balance wrong?" He had a feeling he was going to sit a lot of the dances out purely to avoid that issue.

Charlie pressed his lips together so he wouldn't laugh and raised his eyebrows at Percy, thoroughly amused. "And what clothes do you wear as advisor, if Daddy is dressed up like a pretty princess?" he asked quietly, straining not to laugh. Lucy hadn't been specific enough, and he knew an opening when he heard it.

A few years ago, Percy would have wrinkled his nose at the mention of persons throwing up. However, after years of bottle feeding and burpings and dirty diapers, it simply didn't faze him any longer. "A very important sense to have."

Percy shook his head. "If she's the type who would begrudge you being something less than graceful, then she can go and lose a leg and we'll see how graceful she is afterwards." He knew his brother did his best with how things were, and though Percy was quite happy giving Charlie the freedom to do whatever he wanted without being offered 'help', he also didn't think his brother should be laughed at or ostracized for his efforts.

He had been en route to the kitchen table with the cups of tea when Charlie asked his question, prompting a glare from Percy. "I don't think I would make a good princess, so I'll leave that to Lucy." He tried to be careful with his words for his daughter's sake, not wanting her to think there was somethign wrong with being a princess. He placed Charlie's cup in front of him, then took a seat himself. "Why don't you get yourself some pumpkin juice," he said to Lucy, who grinned.

"Yes, Daddy. I get pumpkin juice because I'm your Pumpkin!"

He chuckled as she bounced off to the ice box, then turned to the bag. "I've three sets in here, shrunk for storage. One is black, one navy, and the last brown, all similar cuts. We have similar complexions so the colours should be fine. Do you have a preference?"

Charlie was touched by his brother's vigorous defence of him. He sometimes forgot that Percy could be quite so dedicated to his family after the position he'd taken during the war. He sort of understood in the end, but it had been hard to see his brother on the opposite side. "Thanks, Perce. I'll just do my best to not say anything too rude if she's mean."

"Ah, that's true. Plus I think you're prettier, Luce," he confided, before nodding his thanks for the tea as Lucy scampered away to get juice.

He considered, sipping at his tea. "Well, I'm not much for formal, but maybe the navy? Bit more interesting than black. But honestly, no real preference." He shrugged. His habitual clothing consisted mostly of jeans and t-shirts with shorts or cropped combat style trousers for hot days and workouts.

"If she's mean, then she would be in the wrong for being an inhospitable hostess. I would hope that a woman of her standing would know better, and if not, then it says more about her than you."

He nodded, more than happy to agree that Lucy was prettier than he. "Though also intelligent, and kind, and clear-thinking - all good qualities in a ruler," he finished with a wink to Charlie.

"An excellent choice, I'm rather fond of the navy myself. I often wear it with a powder blue pin-stripe dress shirt, but a simple white one would suit just as well." Yes, Percy was quite fond of his tailored robes. Yet if he took the job he'd been offered, he would have to get a new wardrobe to fit Muggle styles - which was appealing in its own way but would still be an expense.

"We'll get it spelled after we've had our tea. In the meantime, did I tell you that I was convinced to participate in this weekend's raffle as a date?"

"True, although it wouldn't stop some people. I'll just deal with it if it comes to it," he said, privately noting that his most likely method would be to leave while swearing.

Charlie nodded extra slowly, feigning more thought than he needed. "They are indeed, and I think being considerate and remembering everyone is a little different is important too."

He tried hard not to wince at Percy's description of his outfit. He was, and always had been, so neat and precise. So unlike many of his siblings. Not that they were ignorant of the concepts, they just tended to be a little less fastidious about it.

"I'll probably just stick to white." He was sure he had white, after all. "Sounds like a plan though," he added, sipping his tea.

"No, you didn't. Are you looking forward to it or not?"

Percy shrugged, then picked up his cup for sip of tea. He opened his mouth to reply when Lucy came by with a glass that was much larger than what Percy usually prepared for her and shakily put it on the table. He bit his lip in order to not laugh at the sight as she then looked expectantly at Charlie. She patted his lap, then held her arms out, all but demanding he pick her up and sit her there. Percy held his hands up, anticipating his brother looking his way and decidedly staying out of it.

"This little one convinced me because she thought we needed to help Alicia's Foundation-"

"And," Lucy chimed in, "Grandma Molly said you needed a date, and there are dates at the raffle." She then looked up at Charlie, a curious look on her face. "Uncle Charlie, what's a date and why does Daddy need one?"

Charlie glanced at Percy when Lucy clearly demanded to be picked up, but clearly he was getting no help from that quarter so he rolled his eyes and hoisted her into his lap, making sure his feet were square on the floor so he could keep his balance.

He'd almost started to laugh at Lucy's comment about their mother telling Percy he needed a date, she still did the same to Charlie, despite knowing he had no preference for one. Lucy's question brought him up short though and he opened his mouth, frowned, took a breath and had a moment of panic about how to explain it. He had the feeling Percy was going to be no help at all on that front. "A date is usually when people who like each other decide to spend time together to get to know each other," he said, looking appealingly at Percy. This was so far out of his area it was unreal, and he couldn't swear, and mentioning sex was a no-no. "And Grandma Molly likes people to be happy, and dates can help make people happy."

"What Grandma Molly wants is more grandchildren," Percy muttered.

"Oh!" Lucy said, her face looking as if she'd just had an epiphany. "Like how Mummy goes out to dinner with Mister Longfellow and stays out really, really late, and sometimes he comes home too and-"

"He what?!" Percy was on the verge of interrogating her to find out more about this man, not because of any romantic jealousy (because he frankly couldn't care less) but because he wanted to know who was this man who was being introduced into his daughter's life. "I mean, yes, it does sound like he and your mother are going on a date," he managed through grit teeth.

"But, do I have to have a date too?" Lucy asked with a face full of confusion.

This one Percy felt quite comfortable answering. "Not everybody likes to have dates. Your Uncle Charlie here doesn't, and he's a perfectly happy and wonderful person. In fact, Lucy, I don't think you should even think of dates until you've long graduated from Hogwarts." With any luck, anyway.

"So, Charlie, will you be attending the raffle? Or are you working? It would be nice to see you there, even if we both know you don't need a date," he added with a chuckle.

Privately Charlie very much agreed with Charlie's assessment, but this wasn't the time to bring it up.

He winced slightly at Percy's outburst about the dates Lucy's mother was going on. Again, not the time to discuss it.

"You're Dad is right, you don't have to date if you don't want to," he said. He decided to opt out of the discussion of when she could or couldn't start dating. He doubted somehow that Percy would get lucky enough on the worrying front and have a dateless Lucy until school was over, but he supposed their had to be hope for any protective father in that direction.

Charlie's face crinkled into a slight frown. "No, I'm not going. I've re-arranged the schedule so that some of the staff can, but I'm working. I'm sending along a donation though, and the club's sponsoring a date."

Percy nodded. "That's kind of you, on all fronts. I know Alicia has been working hard on it and has much to be proud of."

And now that he was thinking along those lines... "I don't suppose you would be up to sitting for me should my date fall on one of my days with Lucy, would you? And I know, as long as it doesn't interfere with Wingbeat. I would apprecaite it if you could, but if it's not possible, I'd understand."

"It should be a fantastic event, and it's a great cause," Charlie agreed, with a nod.

He grinned at Percy's request. "I'm sure I can manage that. Hopefully there won't be a clash, because I love spending time with all of my nieces," he said, blowing gently on the back of Lucy's ear.

Lucy burst into a fit of giggles at her uncle's antics. "Daddy, Uncle Charlie's blowing on me!" she squealed.

"I see that," Percy replied, trying to keep a straight face. "Are you trying to tell me that he's the Big Bad Wolf now?" She giggled even further.

Percy noticed that Charlie had finished his tea, so he stood up and opened up the bag on the table, pulling out the navy robes. "So, Uncle Charlie, shall we attempt to make you look pretty for the ball?"

"Dragon, Percy, dragon. Get it right," Charlie said, laughing. "Although they tend to breathe fire," he said, "so maybe not."

He sighed, but without any weight of malice behind it. "Yes, we should probably try," he said. "Up you get, Luce," he said, hoisting her off his lap and setting her on the floor so he could stand more easily. He would have just stood with her in his arms and set her on his chair, but he didn't quite trust his balance yet.

Standing he cocked his head at Percy. "So, what do you need me to do?" he asked. "Because my resizing charms probably shouldn't be used on clothes," he said. He was perfectly adequate at them, but he thought he remembered Percy being far more precise, as he was in so many things.

"Ah yes," Percy said knowingly. "Remember Lucy, Uncle Charlie is secretly a dragon, but we must not tell anyone."

He took a moment to look his brother up and down, ignoring Lucy's urging that the robes should be pink or purple. "I'll perform an initial resizing so that they can get on you first, then we can tailor it more. It won't be as professional as if Astoria had done it, but it would still work well enough. Let's see, a little shorter in the body but wider in the shoulders, torso, and legs..." He took out his wand and wove a pair of sizing charms that would enable the robes, which were made to fit Percy's lean frame, to slide onto Charlie's without ripping. "Here, try these on, and we can tailor it from here."

"Right you are," he said, stripping off the jumper he was wearing and took the robes from Percy and fiddled for a few seconds before pulling them on carefully. There were no ominous tearing sounds, which he was grateful for, but they felt rather uncomfortable over his jeans.

"Well, Lucy, what do you think?" he asked, holding his arms up so both she and Percy could see. Percy would need to see so he could adjust the sizing where things were a bit gaping where he'd overdone the adjustment.

"You look rumply," Lucy said with a wrinkled nose.

Percy raised an eyebrow at his daughter before turning his wand to his brother. "It's a little big in some places, uneven in others because of the spells I used. Give me a few moments and it should be a little better." He cast another series of charms, these ones more targeted at specific areas. As they worked, the robes became more fitted and did a better job at highlighting his brother's particular dimensions.

"There," he said witha smile as the final spell fited the robes around Charlie's wrist. "How does that feel?"

Charlie wiggled his eyebrows at Lucy and grinned.

He waited obediently as Percy worked, trying not to shift as the spells tightened and neatened the robes.

"Honestly? Uncomfortable, but that's just because I'm not really used to robes any more. It's the familiar sort of uncomfortable though," he said, going through a range of movements to test the robes out, pleased with the fit. "You've done a great job though."

"How about now, Lucy?" he asked, knowing he'd get a straight answer from her.

Lucy took a few moments to look over her uncle before giving him a thumb's up. "Tres beau, Oncle Charles," she replied, showing off the French that her Aunt Fleur had taught her. "You look just like Prince Charming now!"

Percy grinned. "You heard the little princess, I believe your fairy godparents have prepared you for the ball. The spells last two weeks, so as long as you don't wear them a week after the ball, then you shouldn't turn Cinderalla on us."

"Multumesc, prințesă," he said in his best Romanian, sketching a little bow. "Thank you both. At least my clothes won't embarrass me now."

He nodded his understanding at Percy's explanation about the spells and slipped the robes back off carefully. "I'll get them clean and back to you as soon as I can," he said, flattening down his hair with one hand. "And make an appointment to get new robes soon. Lucy courtseyed in response, a huge grin on her face. "You're beautiful even without your clothes, Uncle Charlie." Percy decidedly looked up at the ceiling, not wanting to accidentally point out the more adult connotations beneath such an innocent statement.

"As I said, I swear by Astoria, and if you tell her I sent you, I'm sure she'll give you her very best designs." All right, he couldn't resist one comment at Charlie's expense. "I never thought I'd see the day when you get my hand me downs. My, have the tables turned, brother?"

"Thank you, Lucy," Charlie said seriously. Even though he didn't always feel beautiful, what with a missing leg and several scars, he took her words seriously. And the secondary meaning... well it didn't mean anything much to him in any case, so he could ignore it, especially given the innocence behind it.

Charlie nodded. "Yeah, you weren't the only one to recommend her. I'll get in touch once the dance is over." He couldn't help but laugh at Percy's comment about the hand-me-downs. "You have a point there. Especially since it wouldn't work if we didn't have magic," he said, amused.
