RP: Lucy and Susan's Excellent Adventure
Who: Lucy and Susan

What: Susan and Lucy go shopping for clothes for Lucy

Where: London

When: Saturday, 4 October

Rating: SFW, possibly some swearing from Susan.

Susan got to the Leaky Cauldron slightly before she was meant to meet Lucy. She'd taken the time to change some Galleons over to Muggle pounds - a process which, though arduous, had proved to be highly amusing given the deeply affronted manner with which the Goblins had handed her the money.

She settled down at the table and began rummaging around in her new bag, impatiently setting the camping stool and packed up Wizards tent back in the correct compartment before grabbing her book. She'd only read a couple of pages when she looked up and saw her friend. "Hell darling," she said with a huge smile. "Ready are you?"

"I couldn't agree more," Lucy said, shaking her head. "But as far as I can tell, charity work is full of women middle-aged and up. I'm the youngest person in my office by about two and a half decades." There were some younger people, but they were more directly involved with the children and tended not to have their own desks in the office. Besides, most stayed for six months or so and then moved on.

They headed towards the boutique slowly, Lucy pausing to look in the windows of various shops they passed. "I need some shoes too," she admitted. Shoes were easier than clothes, she didn't need to adjust them to fit. "But lets get an outfit first so we know what we're matching with."

"Ah I knew I liked you for a reason," Susan said, flashing a smile. "So what you're saying to me is that you're the fiercest woman in the office and that we need to get you walking in there with bright red lipstick and seven inch heels? Because that can be arranged."

She glanced into the windows obligingly as Lucy dragged her feet. "I think getting the outfit before the shoes is a definitely good idea," she said, pulling a face. "I've had to go out and buy outfits to match shoes before and it sucks." She entered the boutique and immediately gravitated to a wrack of gorgeous dresses before remembering that they were here for Lucy. "So, what type of outfit are you looking for?"

Lucy grinned, because the idea was a brilliant one and part of her would really love to do it, to shock everyone and be bold. It wasn't that she was timid most of the time - far from it - but what with her falsified GCSE results she'd always been wary about finding work should anything go wrong. "Maybe not so much with the heels," she said. "I can't walk in the damn things." She'd tried, wanting to add a few inches to her height, but she hated wobbling around and they hurt.

Lucy followed Susan over to the dresses, making a face. "I don't know, a dress or a skirt or something..." She looked through the dresses, moving the coathangers along the rack. "I have work clothes already, and casual clothes and date clothes but I don't have..."

Susan grinned as the idea took hold, her friend breaking out into a grin. "Okay, so no heels. But you would be amazed at some of the charms they've put on them these days - they're way more comfortable and you're not like to topple over all the time." She paused, not wanting to go down the obviously fraught path of magical discussion again. "Anyway, yes. Red lipstick I think. A cool red so you don't look cheap. We should get some today?"

"If you're going to get a dress," she said, looking Lucy up and down thoughtfully, "Then we should get you something with a pencil skirt and a boat neckline. Elegant and sophisticated enough to dress up, but still wearable around the office with say a jacket and some flats." She turned and pawed through the rack, pulling out a likely black ensemble. "How about this one?"

Lucy bit her lower lip lightly. She'd never thought about putting charms on shoes... That would actually be really useful! She'd tried the sticky gel things you could buy to put in shoes but never found they really worked. "How long do the charms last?" she asked, wondering whether she could ask Susan to cast them for her and have them hold up until her event. She didn't like the idea, but she was curious about how well they would work and whether she could really walk in heels for the first time. "Red lipstick? If you say so."

She considered the dress Susan pulled out and frowned. "Can we get something a bit more... colourful?" If she was going to go for the fierce young woman look she thought black was a bit boring. She picked out a similarly-shaped dress in deep electric blue. "I suppose this wouldn't go with red lipstick?"

She turned and looked at Lucy in surprise. "Well I mean, I'm not a charm mistress so I couldn't make them last indefinitely, but I think I could definitely manage a month depending on how much you wear them?" She looked down at her own shoes and squinted, considering. "Yeah I reapply the charms about once a month generally?" She continued walking for a moment, giving Lucy a deeply amused look. "Red. Definitely red. Just a suggestion though."

She nodded and put the dress back. "Absolutely, colourful is definitely the way to go as well, though a little black dress is something every woman should have in their wardrobe. She looked at the blue dressed and grinned wolfishly. "Okay so that I like, you have to try it on," she said enthusiastically. "As for the lipstick, it'll just be a case of going for a cold-red as opposed to a warm-red. Suit your colouring much more I think anyway."

Lucy absorbed that information, but kept quiet. She really didn't want to ask for help - ever again if she could manage it - but actually being able to wear heels for once... She pushed the dilemma away. She could decide later, when they'd actually found some shoes. Until then, there was no point worrying.

"Alright," she agreed, hooking the coat hanger with the blue dress over two fingers. "Shall we find a few more to try on, too?" She generally found it was more efficient that way than trying one thing at a time. She shrugged at Susan's comments about lipstick. "I wouldn't know the difference between cold-red and warm-red. You'll have to find me something right." This, at least, she was willing to ask for help with.

Susan hummed to herself as Lucy fell silent again, no doubt getting prickly about the idea of Susan performing the any sort of magic for her. It was a shame, she mused, that Lucy seemed so obstinate about magic; it would have made her life immeasurably easier. Well, in the present it would have made things easier, during the War perhaps not so much, but still. She shook her head and focused on not smacking into pole.

"Absolutely," Susan replied, picking up an emerald green dress in a similar style, and after a moment, a deep burgundy one as well. "How about these," she asked, handing them over. She smiled slightly at Lucy's declaration but shook her head. "It's not anything esoteric, it's just..." she looked around for inspiration to try and explain. "It's the difference to a red thats got more orange in it, and a red that has more blue in it? Does that make any sort of discernible sense or do I sound like a madwoman?"
