RP: Lucy and Susan's Excellent Adventure
Who: Lucy and Susan

What: Susan and Lucy go shopping for clothes for Lucy

Where: London

When: Saturday, 4 October

Rating: SFW, possibly some swearing from Susan.

Susan got to the Leaky Cauldron slightly before she was meant to meet Lucy. She'd taken the time to change some Galleons over to Muggle pounds - a process which, though arduous, had proved to be highly amusing given the deeply affronted manner with which the Goblins had handed her the money.

She settled down at the table and began rummaging around in her new bag, impatiently setting the camping stool and packed up Wizards tent back in the correct compartment before grabbing her book. She'd only read a couple of pages when she looked up and saw her friend. "Hell darling," she said with a huge smile. "Ready are you?"

Lucy hated shopping for clothes - especially the kind of clothes she'd have to wear to her work event. Her height did not suit itself to finding things that fit her easily and she almost always had to hem or take in or otherwise adjust. That wasn't too difficult on t-shirts and jeans, but fancy dresses, blouses or skirts proved much more challenging. Besides, she never looked natural in dresses - something about her body type.

Still, she put on a smile as she walked from the tube to the Leaky Cauldron. It was becoming a familiar walk by now, which in itself felt strange. If she had to shop, at least she'd have company. Inside, she spotted Susan easily and went to stand by her table. "Ready as I'll ever be," she agreed, making a face.

Susan smiled and leant forward to reached down into the depths of her bag to tuck her book away and grab an umbrella. "Right, where do you want to go to first," she asked, standing up and kissing Lucy on each cheek. "I was thinking maybe Oxford Street, then there's a great little store on Monument that can do any alterations we can't manage ourselves."

She walked outside, glad for the jacket she was wearing and looked at her friend. "Do you want to side-along with me?" She had a rather firm suspicion that as Lucy had left the magical world before her seventeenth birthday, she probably wouldn't have got her license and thus possibly wasn't accustomed to apparating and disapparating. "It'll be fun, and much quicker than messing about with the tube, don't you think?"

"Oxford Street will be packed," Lucy complained - this was the one thing she hated about London, that everywhere one might want to go on a weekend would be packed with tourists and other inhabitants also trying to get there. "There's an arcade in Angel that might not be so bad. And I can do alterations myself. I've gotten pretty good." Mostly, she didn't want to spend any more money on this outfit than she was already going to have to. Charity work didn't exactly pay that well.

She paused at Susan's question. She'd heard about apparition, but chosen not to take lessons at school. Partly because of the extra expense (things had been tight, what with her parents trying to move house) but mostly because she'd been sure she'd never manage it. If she'd tried, she would only have ended up hurting herself. "I - How does it work?" she asked, never one to turn away from a challenge.

"Of course it'll be packed, it's London," Susan retorted good naturedly. The bustle and crowds of the city never particularly bothered her, but she had a rather large assortment of friends with various post-traumatic stress issues so she was always quick to acquiesce in situations where facing large crowds wasn't necessary. "Angel sounds fine though. I know some places around Islington as well, so it could be a good place to go." Susan took in Lucy's outfit and nodded appreciatively. "I can tell! Do you transfigure or use charms?"

She blinked several times, shock registering on her face. "Did- did you not... No I suppose you didn't. Well, never mind." She paused for a moment, mentally reassessing the situation. "Well, you grab onto my arm and hold on tightly. It'll feel like the breath has been knocked out of you but don't worry, it'll be fine." She smiled encouragingly and held out her arm. "Angel first then?"

Lucy gave a disbelieving snort of laughter. "I don't. I use needle and thread." She still hadn't talked to anyone about how little magic she'd done in the last few years, but she was starting to think she might have to. Everyone just assumed - but then magic had always come easily to everyone else. More easily than to her, at any rate.

After a moment's consideration, Lucy nodded. She liked to think of herself as pretty tough. If she could handle a fall from an MVS wall at her climbing gym, she could handle this. She took Susan's arm, her muscles braced for impact. "Ready."

Susan felt her eyebrows shoot up. She'd always been aware that Lucy had found it harder to master magic than the rest of them, but she'd had no idea that she'd not been practicing magic. Although it made a certain amount of sense, as she lived with Muggles and there hadn't been any major warning from the Ministry in regards to improper magic use, it only stood to reason that she hadn't actually been practising her magic in some time. "Oh," she said at last. "Well I can help with the alterations. Save your fingers."

She waited until Lucy had grabbed her arm before disapparating, the normal feeling of tightness overcoming her for a moment before they reappeared in quiet side street in the Angel. She looked over at Lucy, waiting to see how she would react to what was apparently her first time apparating. "You okay," she asked.

Lucy saw the surprise and instantly felt on her guard. So, that answered whether this was something she was ready to talk about. "I don't need help." This wasn't school, she wasn't going to rely on other people doing everything for her anymore. She hadn't done that in years and getting away from her dependence had been one of the best things about leaving the magical world. She wasn't going to give that up.

Apparating was surprisingly like hitting the ground after a fall - only it seemed to last longer. That feeling of coming up against something solid and having the wind knocked out of you. It took Lucy a few moments to get her breath back but after a quick check to make sure she was still whole, she nodded. "Yeah, not too bad."

Susan sensed the determination in the other woman's voice and lifted her hands in a conciliatory manner. "Of course you don't dear, I was merely offering. I've gotten very good at it over the years and it takes me minutes to do things that would take considerably longer by hand."

She looked approvingly at Lucy. "Most people vomit their first times apparating you know," she said with a nod, before leading them off down the street. She'd walked about twenty metres when she suddenly stopped and looked at her friend. "You know I actually don't know where this arcade is, are we going in the right direction?"

"You say that, but I know my own measurements by heart now." The actual sewing might be quicker with magic, but Lucy had been adjusting her own clothes since she left school and it was hard to believe anyone else could know her body well enough to do it as well as she did.

Lucy gave a surprised laugh and shook her head. "I'm made of tougher stuff, then." She wasn't sure whether to feel proud of if Susan was just joking. It had been unpleasant, but not nearly bad enough to make her feel ill. But before she could ask more, Susan was off and Lucy had to trot after her to make up for the difference in their heights and respective stride lengths. It was something she was used to, all three of her sisters and most of her friends being significantly taller than her. "We're going the right way," Lucy assured her, as they stepped out onto the main road from Angel station. "See that red-and-white awning? The entrance to the arcade is just beyond that." She pointed so Susan would be able to follow her gaze.

Susan nodded and lifted her hands in defeat. You could untether a hippogriff but you couldn't make it fly. "Fine fine, let's pretend I didn't suggest it shall we," she said with the hint of a smirk marring her face. "I wasn't calling into question your abilities with a needle and thread, only offering an alternative."

"Obviously," she said with a laugh to match Lucy's. "I remember I splinched myself the first time I ever managed to disapparate properly," she said with a slight shudder at the memory. It had taken her years to really get over the fear of having it happen again, and even then, she always made sure to follow regulations about intercontinental apparition. "Ah perfect," she said, slowing down and obligingly letting her friend take the lead. "What type of dress are you thinking of buying," she asked casually as they ambled along. "Or possibly a suit? I imagine you'd look dashing in a tuxedo."

Lucy smiled, happy to drop the subject and concentrate on the minefield of picking work appropriate clothes. She grimaced. "I wish I could wear a tuxedo." If she tailored it properly, she was pretty sure she could make that work. "My bosses are all kind of ... traditional." She hated buying dresses, though. There was something about her shoulders or her build just made them look awkward.

She lead the way to the arcade, slowing down to have a look at the shop map. "I probably need to at least wear a skirt. And I don't know where to start."

Susan frowned and shook her head sadly. "In this day and age, a woman should be able to wear a bitching suit and tie if she wants to," she said, perhaps a little more crossly than she intended: sexism of any sort made her fingers itch for her wand and hexes to jump on her tongue.

She looked down at the map and frowned. "I have no idea, what about that that boutique over there," she said, pointing to a shop not far from them. "It looks like it has some things you'll like. Plus it's as good a place to start as any."

"I couldn't agree more," Lucy said, shaking her head. "But as far as I can tell, charity work is full of women middle-aged and up. I'm the youngest person in my office by about two and a half decades." There were some younger people, but they were more directly involved with the children and tended not to have their own desks in the office. Besides, most stayed for six months or so and then moved on.

They headed towards the boutique slowly, Lucy pausing to look in the windows of various shops they passed. "I need some shoes too," she admitted. Shoes were easier than clothes, she didn't need to adjust them to fit. "But lets get an outfit first so we know what we're matching with."

"Ah I knew I liked you for a reason," Susan said, flashing a smile. "So what you're saying to me is that you're the fiercest woman in the office and that we need to get you walking in there with bright red lipstick and seven inch heels? Because that can be arranged."

She glanced into the windows obligingly as Lucy dragged her feet. "I think getting the outfit before the shoes is a definitely good idea," she said, pulling a face. "I've had to go out and buy outfits to match shoes before and it sucks." She entered the boutique and immediately gravitated to a wrack of gorgeous dresses before remembering that they were here for Lucy. "So, what type of outfit are you looking for?"

Lucy grinned, because the idea was a brilliant one and part of her would really love to do it, to shock everyone and be bold. It wasn't that she was timid most of the time - far from it - but what with her falsified GCSE results she'd always been wary about finding work should anything go wrong. "Maybe not so much with the heels," she said. "I can't walk in the damn things." She'd tried, wanting to add a few inches to her height, but she hated wobbling around and they hurt.

Lucy followed Susan over to the dresses, making a face. "I don't know, a dress or a skirt or something..." She looked through the dresses, moving the coathangers along the rack. "I have work clothes already, and casual clothes and date clothes but I don't have..."

Susan grinned as the idea took hold, her friend breaking out into a grin. "Okay, so no heels. But you would be amazed at some of the charms they've put on them these days - they're way more comfortable and you're not like to topple over all the time." She paused, not wanting to go down the obviously fraught path of magical discussion again. "Anyway, yes. Red lipstick I think. A cool red so you don't look cheap. We should get some today?"

"If you're going to get a dress," she said, looking Lucy up and down thoughtfully, "Then we should get you something with a pencil skirt and a boat neckline. Elegant and sophisticated enough to dress up, but still wearable around the office with say a jacket and some flats." She turned and pawed through the rack, pulling out a likely black ensemble. "How about this one?"

Lucy bit her lower lip lightly. She'd never thought about putting charms on shoes... That would actually be really useful! She'd tried the sticky gel things you could buy to put in shoes but never found they really worked. "How long do the charms last?" she asked, wondering whether she could ask Susan to cast them for her and have them hold up until her event. She didn't like the idea, but she was curious about how well they would work and whether she could really walk in heels for the first time. "Red lipstick? If you say so."

She considered the dress Susan pulled out and frowned. "Can we get something a bit more... colourful?" If she was going to go for the fierce young woman look she thought black was a bit boring. She picked out a similarly-shaped dress in deep electric blue. "I suppose this wouldn't go with red lipstick?"

She turned and looked at Lucy in surprise. "Well I mean, I'm not a charm mistress so I couldn't make them last indefinitely, but I think I could definitely manage a month depending on how much you wear them?" She looked down at her own shoes and squinted, considering. "Yeah I reapply the charms about once a month generally?" She continued walking for a moment, giving Lucy a deeply amused look. "Red. Definitely red. Just a suggestion though."

She nodded and put the dress back. "Absolutely, colourful is definitely the way to go as well, though a little black dress is something every woman should have in their wardrobe. She looked at the blue dressed and grinned wolfishly. "Okay so that I like, you have to try it on," she said enthusiastically. "As for the lipstick, it'll just be a case of going for a cold-red as opposed to a warm-red. Suit your colouring much more I think anyway."

Lucy absorbed that information, but kept quiet. She really didn't want to ask for help - ever again if she could manage it - but actually being able to wear heels for once... She pushed the dilemma away. She could decide later, when they'd actually found some shoes. Until then, there was no point worrying.

"Alright," she agreed, hooking the coat hanger with the blue dress over two fingers. "Shall we find a few more to try on, too?" She generally found it was more efficient that way than trying one thing at a time. She shrugged at Susan's comments about lipstick. "I wouldn't know the difference between cold-red and warm-red. You'll have to find me something right." This, at least, she was willing to ask for help with.

Susan hummed to herself as Lucy fell silent again, no doubt getting prickly about the idea of Susan performing the any sort of magic for her. It was a shame, she mused, that Lucy seemed so obstinate about magic; it would have made her life immeasurably easier. Well, in the present it would have made things easier, during the War perhaps not so much, but still. She shook her head and focused on not smacking into pole.

"Absolutely," Susan replied, picking up an emerald green dress in a similar style, and after a moment, a deep burgundy one as well. "How about these," she asked, handing them over. She smiled slightly at Lucy's declaration but shook her head. "It's not anything esoteric, it's just..." she looked around for inspiration to try and explain. "It's the difference to a red thats got more orange in it, and a red that has more blue in it? Does that make any sort of discernible sense or do I sound like a madwoman?"

By the time they'd chosen both a dress and shoes, Lucy was about ready for food. She hadn't realised how hungry she was, and now it was that awkward time of day that wasn't really appropriate for lunch or dinner. Deciding that she didn't care, Lucy lead Susan to what looked like a decent burger place she'd walked past several times.

"Right," she said, determined. "No more talk about clothes or shoes or make up." They hadn't managed to buy any lipstick yet but... "I'm grateful for the help, but I am so ready to talk about something else. Fill me in on what's been happening -"

Susan trotted beside Lucy, toting a rather impressive number of dresses and shoes for herself considering the object of the excursion had been to get things for Lucy. Still, she allowed herself to be led towards a burger bar, which had the sort of deeply hip staff that seemed to be the requirement of any burger join these days.

She laughed and nodded approvingly. "Yes, as much as I love clothes I think we need to talk about something else." She sat down and considered for a few moments. "Well let's see: Dean and Seamus are still pining for one another but refusing to admit that they're in love with one another, there's a charity auction coming up, I appear to have acquired a boyfriend, Ernie and Justin work way too much, the Ministry seems to finally be regaining equilibrium after the war, and I'm thinking about buying a house that my aunt and ten death eaters didn't die in."

Lucy rested her elbows on the table and ready over the menu, making a pleased-surprised noise when she noted they had chips and gravy on the menu. That was appropriate between-meals food, as far as she was concerned.

"Dean?" she asked, forehead wrinkling as she tried to remember. "Was that Seamus' friend from school?" She hadn't known either of them well - but she thought she'd seen Dean in a coffee shop near her house a couple of times. Maybe she'd just been imagining it, though. She hadn't been able to remember his name at the time, only that he was one of the Gryffindor boys that wasn't Harry Potter, Ron Weasley or Neville Longbottom.

"I think I'm helping out with the auction," she added, happy to talk about something she knew more about. "Hang on, boyfriend?" She grinned at Susan. She might not be the most feminine girl in the world but still, talking about a boyfriend clearly trumped talking about charity raffles or people Lucy barely knew. "Is he cute? What does he do?' She blinked a little at the mention of Susan's aunt, but decided to keep things on the lighter note.

Susan glanced at her friend and then followed suit, reading through the menu and finding something with chicken and cheese and herbed mayonnaise that met her requirements.

She nodded with a smile. "Dean Thomas yeah, he's Seamus' best friend and one of my best friends, and a very good artist now," she replied, absently twirling a napkin around in her fingers. "He was in Gryffindor with Seamus, Harry, Ron, and Neville. In our year. Lovely bloke."

"Ooooh what are you doing at the action then," she asked with genuine interest. It was just like Alicia to rope people in to help with her very good cause, even people who had barely re-entered the Wizarding world. She quirked her eyebrows at Lucy and nodded. "Yep, a boyfriend, Eddie Carmichael to be precise," she said, returning the grin. "He's very, very hot. Also cute I guess, but definitely hot. He works as a Cursebreaker for Gringott's bank so I don't get to see him as much as I'd like, and the whole boyfriend thing is very new. But yes."

She looked up as the bored looking waitress came over and took their orders, then turned back to her friend. "How about you? Is there anyone on the horizon?"

Filing away this information about Dean, Lucy nodded. It wasn't particularly relevant to her right now - but you never knew when such things might come in useful. "I'm not sure yet. Selling tickets, maybe?" She hoped it would be something simple like that, that she could do without magic.

"Ooh." She smiled. "That's exciting!" Lucy had had a few boyfriends since school, though nothing that had lasted very long, so she tended to favour the early part of the relationship. After the magic fluttery feeling had faded things tended to get awkward or complicated.

After ordering her chips and beefburger - and a milkshake, because why not? - she shook her head. "Not lately." She lifted a hand to her mouth and bit at a nail with her incisor before catching herself and putting her hand back down. "Dating is hard."

"Selling tickets would be great," Susan enthused with a big grin. "You're definitely the right sort of girl for the job - bubbly and bright and passionate without being pushy. The last fundraiser I went to had a surly girl who split her time between being obnoxious and trying to flirt with every wealthy looking married man in the room. It was excellent entertainment, she had an ice sculpture thrown at her head."

"It is exciting," she said with a smile, hoping that Eddie would actually live up to her hopes of what a proper partner could be - as opposed to the whole sadistic monster and his equally depraved wife that had typified Susan's last major romance. Still, the early signs looked promising and Susan didn't want to jinx anything.

She waited for Lucy to order and then smiled at the waitress, ordering the chicken burger, chips, and a milkshake because stuff it. "Dating is hard," she agreed with a sigh. "Still, maybe you'll win a date at the auction? That could be groovy?"

Lucy shook her head, "I promise not to be surly or to judge guys by how wealthy they might be. I don't promise not to flirt, though." She gave Susan a conspiratorial smile. "It'll help ticket sales, if nothing else, and who knows... Alicia didn't mention any ice sculptures, so hopefully I'll be safe."

Their food arrived remarkably quickly, and Lucy eagerly started in on her chips. "I'm planning to buy some tickets," she confirmed. "I don't know who for - I'll probably just go by whoever is handsomest." After all, she knew very few of the wizards on the list Alicia had shown her, so what other criteria was she supposed to judge by? "And even if I don't win, it's for a good cause."

Susan laughed gaily and nodded her head. "That sort of flirting is fine," she admitted with a chuckle. "It's when you try and stick your hand down the pants of the Head of the Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures that we have a problem I think. I'll keep an eye out for ice sculptures for you anyway."

As soon as their food arrived, Susan dug into her burger with great gusto - she'd been quite starving and hadn't really had a chance for lunch or breakfast. "That's a great idea," she enthused. "You should buy some tickets for nice chaps - like Bryn, or Terry, or Roger. But you're right in that winning isn't everything and it's a great cause." She paused to eat a couple of the chips that came with her burger, before looking back at Lucy. "So what are your thoughts of the magical world after being away for so long?"

Lucy sipped her milkshake as she thought over Susan's question. What were her thoughts? "I don't really know," she admitted. "It's great to see everyone! But Wayne was talking about us getting jobs here, and Alicia asked if I was interested in something more full time than just the raffle and -" And everytime she thought about it, she felt a flutter of panic, like she was an impostor who didn't belong in this world, because she could barely do magic.

She shrugged and sprinkled pepper over her chips. "It doesn't seem that easy to me. I already have a full-time job. I have friends, my family..." With a sigh, she met Susan's eyes. "You know me. I never could make a decision to save my life. I guess I'm not ready to dive all the way back in yet. I'm dipping my toes in the water."

"Really," Susan asked, quirking an eyebrow in interest. "What was Wayne saying about jobs in the magical world? I mean you both did your OWLs so it's enough to be getting on with if you wanted to." She smiled, touched by Alicia's generosity. "That was lovely of Alicia!"

She nodded, looking at Lucy with a half-smile playing on her lips. "No one's asking you to give up your non-magical life," she said, after a moment of thoughtful chewing. "I mean to a lot of us there's a belief that it's easier for a witch or wizard to live in the magical world as opposed to the Muggle, but I think toe-dipping is smart."

She finished her burger and turned to finish off her chips. "I am quite proud of you," she said casually, deciding to add a smidgen more pepper to her chips. "The magical world is an intimidating place to come back to. It makes me wonder what drove you to come back into the fold, to use an appalling term?"

"More or less that," Lucy said. "I know I'm technically more qualified in the magical world, since I missed my GCSEs - but I have work experience in the muggle world, I'm good with numbers, even if I don't have the qualifications to prove it." She didn't want to give that up and go back to a world in which she didn't feel even competent - but she didn't really expect Susan to understand that, so she focused on her chips.

Her shoulders firmed slightly as Susan confirmed that toe-dipping was a good way to begin. "I get why people believe that," she said. She just wasn't sure it applied to her specifically. Still, at least she was thinking about it, exploring her options. "It is nice not to have to lie so much." She didn't even notice that she'd implicitly admitted to lying at least a little.

Lucy raised an eyebrow. "I don't need you to be proud of me." She pushed her hair out of her face. "I'm not - I don't want to be the little girl who follows you and Ernie and Justin around, needing you to do everything for me." That was the crux of the matter, she supposed. As to the actual question, she shrugged. "Someone sent me a journal and a flyer for Finnigan's."

Susan nodded and smiled, taking in what Lucy was telling her. "I think it's great that you're good with numbers," she said approvingly. "One of the lamentable facts of magical life is how little some of us care about arithmetic and logic," she said with a disapproving shake of her head. "So it's nice to know someone who's good with numbers." Her eyes took on a mirthful light and she leant forward with a faux-conspiratorial whisper, "Besides you never know when you'll need someone to cook the books eh?"

"Of course you do," Susan said, waving a chip to emphasise her point. "You're a smart woman, and I can't even imagine the difficulty of juggling your magical and Muggle identities," she added with sympathy. For Susan, her job required a certain amount of skullduggery and subterfuge as a matter of course, but she could well imagine how it would weigh on Lucy. "Not a fan of lies and chicanery, then?"

Susan felt her own eyebrows raise in response to Lucy's, before an undignified squawk off amusement escaped her lips. "Please don't think I'm being patronising," she said, still deeply amused. "I'm not proud of you in the sense of-" she paused and adopted a simpering matronly sort of voice steeped in the sort of upper class accent that could make anyone schooled by nuns instantly stand straight and correct their non-existant school ties, "Oh Lucy we're simply thrilled with how well you're doing!" She titled her head and ate another chip, assuming her usual voice. "I'm proud in the sense that it takes a lot of gumption to re-enter a world you seemed to have little love for in school, that's all. I don't think of you as anything like that either," she added with a hint of definite steel in her voice. "You're an adult and I'm certainly no one's servant. I would and will help you as much as I would any other friend, no more." She paused and took a sip of her drink, keeping her expression perfectly bland. "Well that was very nice of whoever sent you the journal and the flier, we must thank them one day, don't you think?"

Lucy gave a fierce nod. "I didn't even know," she admitted. The thing she resented most about Hogwarts was that it had thrust her into a world in which she was good at nothing and stopped her from learning she actually had talents in the muggle world. But now that she knew... after all, Susan inadvertently made a good point. Even wizards needed to handle money, if she could convince them she was good at numbers maybe she could find a job. But were there jobs that required no magic? Probably not. Still, perhaps she should investigate - talk to Alicia.

"No," she admitted. "It's easier just not to say anything when people start talking about school..." Not that it happened too often - but it still bothered her. As much as she'd ignored magic since the war, she still knew about it, still knew she was a witch and couldn't tell anyone. "I don't really juggle, though. At least, I didn't before." Now... Yeah, now she was lying more than she liked - about where she spent her evenings. 'Old friends' was what she said when her flatmates asked, but she couldn't talk about them in any detail.

Susan's explaination eased Lucy's prickliness somewhat. She knew Susan was right. Her friends were good people who helped others in general, not just her, but she'd never felt as if she had anything she could volunteer in return. Maybe now things would be different. "I would," she said, "if I knew who it was."

"Well, you do now, so maybe that will help," Susan replied firmly. "Who knows, maybe you could get a job at Gringotts or Alicia's or somewhere like that." She smiled enigmatically, thinking of how nice it would be to have Lucy back in their world properly.

"That makes sense I suppose," she replied with a frown. "I'm interested how well you've managed to go without being caught on the GCSE scores though." She tilted her head, listening to Lucy with interest. "Well of course not, you're a good honest person, but then the Statute of Secrecy kind of has to supercede any personal feelings about it. My cousin's husband is a cop and I've run into him at crime scenes a few times, such wonderfully awkward conversations."

Susan smiled and gave a Gallic shrug. "Who knows," she replied before looking at her watch. She sighed and pushed her plate away. "Well darling, I have to go unfortunately. We must catch up again soon!" She leant forward and kissed Lucy on each cheek before walking outside and down an alley to disapparate.
