Escaping!!
WHO: Neville and Lavender
WHEN: Thursday October 2nd
WHERE: Ministry at first, then we'll see?
WHAT: Neville is taking Lavender out.
RATING: PG?
STATUS: Ongoing

Neville was so done with this week, but unfortunately he'd have to come in the next day. He'd had a nice talk with his gran and was looking forward to move out now. Maybe he'd need to move back in in a few years, but right now, he wanted some independence. He was glad he had talked to Augusta about this and had also mentioned how uncomfortable he was with her tea parties and that he believed in giving real love a chance before settling for someone he didn't know much.

Having both agreed to make an effort, Neville felt much lighter about the whole ordeal and was almost floating when he walked up to Lavender's cubicle with a large grin on his face and a bar of Honeyduke's dark chocolate. "Hey there, lovely!" Neville said, putting the chocolate on the desk in front of Lav, and half-sitting on the corner. He didn't think he desk would withstand his weight even though he was slowly starting to lose a pound here and there.

Lavender was copying her work schedule for the next few weeks into her diary and frowning at a potential clash with duelling club at the beginning of November when Neville arrived. She broke into a grin when she saw the chocolate and sat back so that she could look up at him properly.

"Hey there, yourself," she said warmly. Lavender picked up the chocolate bar. "Someone knows how to get on my good side," she teased. "Thank you. How's your day been?"

Neville chuckled at her comment about staying on her good side. "As if I'd ever do anything to be on your bad side, Lav." He shook his head and smiled. "We're working on dismantling a cauldron black market. That's how exciting my life is at this point." he chuckled again and shook his head.

"I should find myself more fun things to do this winter. I'm almost done closing the garden and I'm keeping a greenhouse up for my most sensitive. But they'll still be sleeping so.." Lavender's father was a herbologist, so she would know what he's talking about at least. Most in his office didn't.

"So I'm taking you out. Is that okay?" He tilted his head on the side, knowing he wouldn't be able to say no. There was no way.

She laughed. In Lavender's experience, her friends tried not to get on her bad side. These days, instead of pouting, a peeved Lavender usually involved a bit of growling and the application of a sly hex.

"So I would like that a lot," Lavender said with a nod. A cauldron black market? No wonder Neville wanted to get away from his paperwork. Smiling, she stood up so that she could give Neville a hug. She drew back, though not before giving him a kiss on the cheek. "I'd love to go out. Where are you taking me?"

Neville hugged her back and smiled. "Is there anything you'd like to do?" He asked her. He wanted to treat her and making her happy and relaxed would be plenty of a reward for him. "I have a feeling you don't go out much either." He told her, gently tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear.

"I'm up for anything, really." He said brightly.

"Not as much as I should," Lavender admitted a little sheepishly. At least Neville understood what it was like get caught up in work like that; people who didn't work in law enforcement usually found it a little harder to understand.

"Well, that chocolate bar is looking very tempting, so I think it might be almost time for dinner." Lavender glanced over her shoulder, trying to find the nearest clock. "Or we could go for a drink? I'm not fussy."

"I'm not gonna blame you or anything. We do tend to let work overtake our lives. That's a sad truth." He said understandingly as he nodded.

"Maybe we could go for both? Food and drinks?" He asked with a grin. "I'm starved, my cafeteria sandwich was sub par and is now very far. It's almost six." He told her once he noticed she was looking for the clock.

Lavender grinned. "Only sub par? Must be one of the good days in the cafeteria," she joked. "Okay, that sounds like a plan. Just give me five minutes to change into something a little less..." She glanced down at her all-black outfit and sensible shoes. "A little less this."

She scooped up a bag from under her desk, slinging it over her shoulder. "Wait here. Have a seat and I will be back as soon as I can."

As good as her word, Lavender returned returned from her trip to the ladies' toilets a few minutes later, now wearing a dress with an autumnal-looking pattern of leaves on in reds and golds. She'd pulled her hair into a loose plait that hung over her shoulder. "So," she said brightly, "what do you fancy for dinner? New chef at Finnigan's? Or somewhere else? I can't decide." Lavender frowned. "Though I probably do go there too much."

Neville laughed. "Well, I didn't want to sound too harsh, but it smelled this time." He admitted, shaking his head. He should stop forgetting his lunch.

He did as he was told and sat in her chair while he waited for her. "Darn," He said under his breath when she came out. "You look amazing, love." He said with a smile and a slight blush. "Anywhere, really. I'll follow you."

"Thanks," Lavender said, blushing a little. Compliments from Neville were always earnest and therefore always appreciated. Reaching over to pick up the chocolate that Neville had brought, she quickly stowed it in her desk drawer - that was going to make work tomorrow a lot more pleasant if she had to spend time at her desk again.

"Um..." Lavender bit her lip, considering her options. "What about Diagon Alley? Isn't there an Italian?" She gave him a knowing look. "Pizza?"

Neville perked up as soon as she mentioned pizza. "Oh! Yes, yes pizza. I'm all on board with that idea." He said, standing as he grinned at Lavender. "Is there pizza at that Italian place on Diagon Alley? The only place I went was close to here." He motioned at random because he didn't have enough orientation to figure out where it really was.

Giggling softly, Lavender linked her arm through his. "I'm just guessing that it does. But if you know somewhere, let's just go there. Now that I've mentioned pizza, I really fancy pepperoni or something." If dark chocolate was the main way to Lavender's heart, meat came a close second.

She wasn't sorry to leave the Department behind her for the day, managing to keep up with Neville's longer legs as they made their way through the Ministry. "I can't believe it's October already," she remarked. "This year just seems to be slipping away."

Neville wasn't always aware of how fast he was walking, mostly because he didn't realize he was so tall, but one look at Lavender and he kissed the top of her head. "You need to remind me not to walk so fast, Lav. Seriously, I don't want you to have to run to keep up with me." He told her.

"Seems like every day is a little bit different but still the same so it just.. rolls and next thing you know, it's Christmas again." He said with a sigh. Not that he didn't like Christmas, but with the whole gifting thing, people often ended up with black market goods, hexed products and sometimes even worse. Busy, busy for the Aurors.

"It doesn't have to be pizza, lasagna is a great fall back too if we go Italian." He mentioned. "But we could go to that place Harry showed me if you want pizza."

"It's okay," Lavender assured him. "Trust me. I've started going running with someone even taller than you and I can keep up with him just fine." She grinned. "This is nothing."

"Um..." Lavender looked up at him now. "Pizza," she decided. "Now I've got it in my head, I have to have it. So I will follow you wherever you want to go."

Neville groaned. "I should start to run again." he said, then sighed. "My physical is coming up and it's making me nervous." Neville admitted freely to the snacks and the not so healthy food, but he really needed to start exercising again.

"Pizza it is." Once out of the building her, he guided her towards the pizza restaurant Harry had introduced him to. "We should have a pizza place that delivers on Diagon Alley."

Lavender winced in sympathy. She hated running, but it was a necessary evil if she wanted to keep up her stamina for work. "I'm sure you'll be fine when you get back into the swing of things," she assured him. "Find yourself a training partner. It helps."

She nodded in agreement. "That would be nice. I hardly ever have Muggle money to get it delivered from anywhere else." Having food cooked and brought to your house really was one of the great Muggle ideas.

He could always ask around, he thought. It would still be better than running on his own.

"Yeah and it would easier to explain than having a Muggle delivery man coming to the Ministry to bring food for the department." He said with a small laugh. He could almost see it in his mind.

Letting out a very restrained snort, Lavender linked her arm through Neville's. "Can you imagine the delivery instructions? Just meet me by the phonebox..." She shook her head. "That sounds so shady."

She couldn't stop smiling as another image popped into her head; Neville's company had made her feel buoyant. "If this law enforcement business doesn't work out for us, we'll learn how to make pizza. We could make a fortune."

Neville laughed. "Yeah, then imagine him trying to figure out why the heck I'm just standing there by the phone booth until he's gone." It was so funny, Neville thought he should do it just for the heck of it.

"We would. Self delivering pizzas would be a hit, definitely." He said, nodding.

"That would be hilarious. And maybe a little bit mean." She grinned.

"Definitely. And obviously we'd have to grow our own veg for toppings and everything." As if they would do anything else. "But, then again, I might just stick to being a Hit Wizard. I'm better at making cake, anyway." Talking of food was ramping up Lavender's appetite, so she had high hopes for the pizza they were going to have tonight.

"Yeah, okay a little mean, but it's not that mean though." He had to admit that Lav was a little right, but there were pranks worse than that.

"Oooh, growing our own veggies, that would be the fun part." He chuckled. "Yeah, you can stay and be a Hit Witch and I'll start growing a bunch of veggies and live off my land." It was mostly a joke, since he doubted he could make enough money to live just by selling what his could produce out of his garden, unless there were medicinal plants and flowers thrown into the mix.

Once they (finally) found the place, Neville looked at Lavender. "What are you hungry for?" he asked her, grinning.

"You know, if there's anyone I believe could actually make a living growing his own food, it's you." She gave Neville's arm a squeeze.

"Hmm." Once they'd finally found the place, Lavender took a long moment to just enjoy the various delicious smells. Tomato and cheese and, yum, fresh bread. Any sort of bread that was just out of the oven was really one of life's simple pleasures. It was one of those times when she could be glad that Greyback's attack had left her sense of smell a little more sensitive. Sometimes it was definitely a burden, but this was one of the good time. "I really fancy pepperoni," she decided. "What do you want?"

Neville chuckled. "Thanks." Her support had made so much in his life possible, of course she's still be supportive if he decided to do something else.

"Anything, really. I just want pizza. It could be the one with pineapples on it." He didn't really like that kind, as he had found, but today he was too hungry to care.

"Hmm, I think we could probably give pineapple a miss." Fruit on pizza just struck Lavender as a bit weird. "We'll take a look at the menu."

Thankfully, the restaurant wasn't that busy and they were seated quickly. Lavender assumed that Thursdays weren't the busiest night around here, which she was glad for as it made it easier to talk. The waitress who had shown them to their table handed them menus, took their drinks order, and promised to come back in a few minute once they'd decided what they wanted to eat.

Lavender glanced at hers, pretty certain that she really did want pepperoni. She looked at Neville over the top of her menu. "So you're really going to move out?" she asked.

Neville looked at his menu and then glanced at Lavender. "Yeah, I'm looking into it." He cracked a smile. "You wouldn't be looking for a room mate by any chance?" He asked, mostly kidding. Just in case.

"It's just that I'd like to have a little bit of independence, even if for a little while. And I'm hoping that Gran was right and that she'll be fine." He said, then frowned. "But she wouldn't lie about this, surely."

Lavender laughed softly. "I haven't thought about moving lately. I mean, my place is tiny and I can't really do anything nice like have a pet or a garden, but it's just... it's mine. I know what you mean about the independence, though. I love it." She grinned. "I wouldn't change it now, actually, though I'm sure I won't be on my own forever. Just can't picture moving back in with my parents."

She reached across the table to touch Neville's hand. "If there's one thing I know about your gran, it's that she knows her own mind." Lavender's lips twitched into a smirk. "And I don't think she's the type to sugarcoat things."

Neville chuckled. "No, no. She doesn't sugarcoat anything." Especially not to him. She had always made sure he always knew what he was getting into, the consequences of his actions or even things about his family's past.

"I'm not sure between getting into a flat, or just getting myself a small house or something. It might be a nice investment for the future though." He was always thinking ahead, trying not to waste anything that had potential. "Maybe.. a fixer upper?" He had always wanted to try his hand at this. Re-doing a house slowly and getting a nice landscape too, possibly even sell for a profit later on, or rent.

"Well, there's no need to rush any decisions," Lavender assured him. "And a house might be nice. I'd love to do something like that, but I'd probably be terrible at it." While she could do plenty of household charms very well, they were mostly limited to the cleaning and cooking variety. Renovating a house was a little outside her skill set. "And a house would have the potential for a proper garden," she reminded him.

Lavender grinned. "I'll be there to help you, whatever you choose. Whether it's bringing food for your housewarming or helping you strip wallpaper."

"I agree with you there. I could have my own garden, but Gran assures me that I still have access to the family gardens." Who else would take care of them, right?

"A house is an investment. And you know, maybe one day.." Who knew, maybe he'd find someone to live with him and not just as a flatmate. "Or I could find a house and made it two flats, rent one out.." He tilted his head on the side as he looked at Lavender. "Stop me before I build the Longbottom Rentals empire." He told her with a laugh.

"I will do nothing of the sort!" Shaking her head, Lavender laughed. "You look more excited about this than you have about anything since..." Lavender pouted a little, trying to think. "Well, since I don't know. So I'll do whatever it takes to encourage you," she teased.

The waitress brought their drinks to the table, so they took the opportunity to order their food. Once she'd gone again, Lavender sat back in her seat and sipped her lemonade. "Longbottom Rentals has a ring to it," she joked.

"Yeah and then I can leave it to my children and they can either expand and own the world or destroy everything." He chuckled and shook his head.

And honestly, when had he been excited about anything? "Last time I was excited about anything, my classmates kept saying: Neville, no offense but I don't care." Herbology hadn't been a passion for a lot of people.

Lavender laugh turned wicked. "Your children destroying everything? Somehow I don't think that's going to happen." As if Neville could father children who would be anything other than absolute sweethearts.

She frowned at his admission, putting her glass down on the table. "But now you've got me her and I do care. I'm excited for you. And I will shower you with compliments until you actually do this."

Neville looked at Lavender. "It depends if they want this or not. What if they don't? I would probably sell and just give them the money before I die." He didn't want to force anything on anyone. "Or I could just help them find what they want to do and help them build it." It would be better, yeah? "But I don't have kids yet, so I might be doing this all for nothing."

He felt bad when she frowned because he hadn't meant to be accusing anyone of anything. "And I appreciate the support, love." he told her sincerely.

She bit her lip. It was kind of adorable the way he worried about something that would potentially happen eight or nine decades from now. This was why she loved him. "Just take it one step at a time," she advised him. "No point getting ahead of yourself. I don't want to think of you dying while I'm eating pizza!" Lavender teased, trying not to giggle.

She smiled at him fondly. "You need to do this for yourself first and foremost. Everything else will just... follow after."

"I'm definitely wanting this for myself." he said softly. "At least the house part. I need something else to do than fill paperwork and winter is coming, so I can't garden." He shrugged and sighed. "It will be something nice to do."

"You will find the right one," Lavender assured him as he kissed her fingers. Moments like this... well, there were a few people in the restaurant who probably thought they were on a date.

Lavender nodded. "Good," she said firmly. It seemed she wouldn't have to threaten him with excessive flattery after all. "I can't wait to see the future Longbottom House." She grinned. "Or whatever you might want to call it."

Neville didn't want to tell her she should because himself didn't do much more than work and take care of the yard at the house. "I can't answer that, because then I'll have to walk out of my denial about my own life and it's just.. it's just not gonna happen for now."

"Looking on the bright side, I used to go running by myself and now I have someone." Which was an interesting way of describing whatever it was Mac had become to her; she still didn't know quite what that was. "Baby steps," she decided. "Those rich, full lives we're supposed to have will happen when they happen. We can't rush it."
