Who: Richard & Pansy
What: Business meeting

When: Tuesday, Sept 30, 10am
Rating: SFW

Dressed in a business appropriate suit, that lent just the right amount of authority and class to the situation, Pansy Apparated to the restaurant Summerby had recommended. Normally she would have chaffed at not being in control of the setting, but she'd found no fault in his choice of meeting spot. She paused a moment before entering to smooth her hair back in place; Apparating always managed to undo a few strands.

Once in, she gave her name to the hostess, and was shown directly to their table. The man she assumed to be Summerby was there already, and stood as she approached. The walk to the table gave her a moment to study him, and she approved of what she saw. She'd asked around about Richard Summerby, and despite the man having been a Hufflepuff, he was quite formidable in the business world. A business relationship with him would be quite the boon.

"Mr. Summerby, it's a pleasure to meet you," she said as she arrived at the table. She held out her hand.

After his early-morning workout and what he felt was entirely too much time pushing paper around the office, Richard was glad to get out for his brunch meeting. He'd planned ahead that morning. While his suit was still from the Row, it wasn't the more stuffy, bankerish cut he usually favored when dealing with the International Exports senior partners and local clients. And it was a bespoke suit from Savile Row.

When the hostess approached with his guest he stood and took the offered hand, careful that his handclasp was warm and professional rather than making any attempt to overpower the attractive woman. After all, with the heritage of his mother's side of the family, as well as all the training he did, he could crush most men's hands if he tried. He'd had enough businessmen try grips with him, he wasn't the sort to start the game himself, especially with a woman that, he was pleased to see, had grown up rather nicely.

"Rich, please," he said with a smile. "I can't help looking over my shoulder to see what my father is doing here when somebody calls me that." He came around to assist her with her chair. "I do appreciate your meeting with me here. Not only is the menu extremely good, any excuse to get away from the office is even better."

She laughed at his comment about his father, as was expected. "Rich, then. You must call me Pansy." She let him help her into her chair, giving him another smile when he was done. "I'll admit, I haven't eaten here before, so I'm trusting your judgement." It was a teasing statement, not meant to be taken seriously.

As curious as she was to find out just what he had in mind as to their business relationship, she was content to let him set the pace for now. It was his money they were dining on, and Pansy knew well the benefits to letting men think they were in control.

"Since you've been here, you'll have to show me the ins and outs of the menu."

"Pansy, then," Rich returned her smile with one of his own.

He nodded. "I suggest you ask for the menu in French. Louis has his English menu and dishes, but seems to prefer to cook for those with a more Continental taste. And while it's getting on in the season, may I suggest a little of the summer wine to start things off? Very light, not too fruity, something to liven the taste buds while you decide what to order. I'm probably going for the Farmer's Brunch. It has already been a long day, and will be even longer before I see the dinner table."

"Once you've ordered, we can get around to why I asked to meet with you, if you don't mind."

"Louis is a man after my own tastes," she said with a laugh, and did as he suggested. "I don't know as I've seen a dinner table on a non-business basis in a month. I imagine your schedule to be much the same?"

She took a moment with the menu, and gave the waiter her order. "And a glass of the summer wine, then, as it comes to highly recommended." She smiled at Richard, and once the waiter was gone got down to business.

"So, tell me a little about your company, and just what it is you'd like me to do for you."

"Pretty much the same, I suspect. When it isn't takeaway grabbed at my desk."

Richard sipped his wine and gathered his thoughts. "A few of us bought what was left of the old Bluebottle Broom company. Trademarks, the works buildings, and so on. Long story short, the rest are boffins and and racing enthusiasts. I'm the chief test rider and token businessman. It all came about after a pleasantly lubricated discussion about the absolute crap, not to mention bootleg, brooms some riders have been bringing to the track. We wanted to bring a race capable - at least for the lower classifications of riders - broom to the market. Thing is, it has to be a money maker too."

He shrugged. "We'll be bringing back the Family Broom and the Two-Place for the every day market. But we'll also be introducing what we currently call the C-Class. Papered by the Ministry for everyday use, but fast enough and strong enough to be competitive in C-level class broom racing. A premium ride at a premium price."

"We were thinking that the C-Class would add a certain cachet to the brooms that most riders would actually want to buy. The sort of broom a family could afford as opposed to someone who wants to go racing. Maybe even a factory team riding our brooms in races. Am I making sense? At any rate, this isn't the sort of thing I usually do, so we decided to bring in a marketing expert to either point us in the right direction, or take over the account."

Pansy kept her face composed as Richard outlined what he had in mind, but inside she was bubbling with excitement. It was exactly what she was good at: building a brand from the bottom up, carving out an exclusive place in the market. That it would be a kick in the face to Nimbus, so soon after dropping their account, was just a bonus.

"You're making perfect sense, Richard. There is certainly a place in the market for a new player, specifically in the C-level as you've described it. Nimbus and Firebolt haven't capitalized in that area, so you could move right in as the first and the best." Possibilities were already running through her mind, and she absently wished for a notebook she could write them down in. She'd just have to remember them later; she had an excellent memory.

Richard nodded. "And since the markup on a top-level broom is much more than on a more mundane one, it should be a nice little profit maker all around."

"I'm open to suggestions on whether or not to field a factory team and who we might get to ride for us. I know more people follow Quidditch than racing, so I'm not sure where to go with that. One of the reasons for bringing you in this early. We'll only be running our production prototypes past the Ministry next week. But I really do think if some big names race Bluebottle Brooms, more of the family types will be drawn to our family brooms. There's a muggle saying, 'Win on Sunday, sell on Monday.' Do you agree?"

He shrugged. "If you'd like, I can take you out to the track and check ride you, get you a track card, and turn you loose on a C-Class for a while. See if you like it as much as the rest of us do."

She let the offer settle between them, then smiled. "Yes, I think that would be an excellent idea," she said, holding back from grinning out right. There were so many opportunities within this job offer, and she planned to capitalize on each one.

"Let me know when's a good time, and I'll make sure my schedule is clear."
