RP: roman holiday
Who: Adrian & Alicia
What: Adrian and Alicia have some important conversations in a beautiful city.
Where: Rome, Itlay
When: 9/27/04
Rating: TBD

Adrian had packed a light bag and dressed in his usual gray suit and white button up, jacket off, sleeves rolled up. He apparated to Alicia's office with his bag and called out, "Alicia, are you set?" He was nervous. His time with Blaise hadn't done much to ease his fears about what he wanted to talk with Alicia about, but he was still excited to have the time away with her.

As much as Adrian loved the twins, he hadn't had a full night with Alicia without worry about the family and everything else.

“I am!” Alicia called back, just closing up her journal and calendar, shoving both into her purse – gods, but she loved those expansion charms that made discrete purses hold so much more than they were supposed to – and grabbed the overnight bag she had packed before coming to the office. With all the time she and Adrian had spent together over the past couple of years, it had come as a surprise when she had realised that this was going to be the first time they would spend more than just a couple of hours together, and more recently without having to be discreet about how they were around each other.

That thought had her smiling, and quickly brush her dress down as she hurried out to meet him, stopping when she saw him. That suit. She didn’t think she could ever tire of seeing him in that suit. It was stylish but he wore it as if it was the most natural thing in the world, a look that really suited him. “Hi,” she smiled at him keeping her eyes on his as she came up to greet him with a kiss.

Adrian mirrored her smile, loving how happy she looked and how natural it all felt when her lips touched his. He deepened the kiss momentarily, feeling free with her for once. Stepping back he smiled down at her, "All set then," and with a deep breath he wrapped his arm around her more tightly and apparating them to the suite he'd rented for them for the night at a wizarding hotel in Rome that he'd known quite well thanks to his family having stayed there when they first made their way to Italy during the war.

The suite was set for an evening of relaxation. Plush carpets, dark thick curtains on the floor to ceiling windows, and when you pulled those back there was a beautiful view of the ruins that sat scattered throughout the city.

Stepping back from his embrace of her, he set his bag down and asked, "What do you think?"

With an arm around Adrian’s waist and a firm hold on her bag, Alicia rested her head against his chest, smiling at the sound of his heartbeat as she let it calm her before he Apparated them away from the office. When she felt the different texture under her feet, she kept her arm around him for another moment, just regaining her footing and getting rid of the discomfort Apparation held for her. Apparation was a necessity, but she had never liked doing it. It made her feel queasy and uncomfortable, but fortunately only very briefly.

She set her bag down and looked around the suite they were in. “That I should take off my shoes,” she answered him, and did just that. “I love it.” Something about the plush carpets just called for bare toes to sink into it as she turned around to look at it. It looked like a wonderful place, and though she had never been there before and the room didn’t resemble anything familiar for her, she felt at ease here, relaxed and comfortable. She held her hand out to Adrian and nodded towards the heavy drapes. “What’s behind the curtain?”

Adrian couldn't help his grin as he took her hand and led her to the curtains, opening them for the view. "All of Rome at your feet." He let her take it in a moment before explaining, "You know that my family traveled during the war, and we ended up here for a spell. This is where we first stayed. According to my mother it's the only wizarding hotel to bother with in all of Europe," he took on a sarcastic tone for his mother's words. "But the place really did begin to feel like home. Of course, that was right around the time we moved again, but you adjust." He smiled at her, still holding her hand, trying not to think of the time on the road with his parents, and everything that it meant.

Adrian knew he had to talk with Alicia about that, eventually, but he wouldn't give up his family's secrets without knowing for sure that she was the witch he'd spend the rest of his life with. There simply wasn't anything else for it. Once he knew, there'd be no other path for him but to tell her. You didn't become a Pucey without knowing the truth. The potential danger you faced, the potential repercussions of knowing.

But this weekend wasn't about any of that. On this holiday, he had much better topics in mind.

Suddenly, he lifted her, keeping her at an angle that she could still see the city if she so inclined, and he kissed her neck, reveling in the freedom to do so with the daylight streaming in the large windows.

“Wow,” Alicia breathed, taking a step closer to the window to take in the entirety of the magnificent view that was spread out in front of them. Sure, she had seen ruins before, but the magnitude of what these ruins had been, was what made them spectacular.

She turned her head to listen to Adrian, listening intently though she was still looking at the ruins. His impression of his mother had her chuckling; she had heard it before, and it sometimes still surprised that this man could be related to someone like her. Other times, when she saw him hiding behind that mask of distance and off-putting it made sense to her. She had seen that other side of him, most prominently back in school, but also in the beginning of their friendship. Well, technically, she supposed, it was before their friendship, when there had still been that hint of annoyed animosity between them. It hadn’t lasted long, though, before she had seen the hints of smiles and the more relaxed side of him until that had been all there was when she was with him, and that was the man she had fallen for. “Did you only stay in hotels?” she asked, wanting to get an idea of how his life had been during his family’s travels without pushing too hard.

Without any warning, she suddenly found herself in his arms, and bright smile on her face at the playfulness of it all. The feel of his lips on her neck had her sigh softly, her eyes fluttering closed as she looped her arms around his neck. “That feels so good,” she murmured, loving that they could do this here, knowing that it shouldn’t just be here this happened. Yes, she had a family that needed to be told first, but she was more concerned about Adrian in this. He had made it clear that he hadn’t dated in the past and she didn’t want to put any pressure on him about when to do what and which steps to take when.

Adrian told her about the hotels and country estates they had stayed in, but when she she sighed into him like that all thought of conversation flew out of his head.

He set her down and kissed her deeply, break apart to say "I love to hear you laugh," his guard down and his feelings for her on full display on his face. "But first, there's something I wanted to speak with you about, come here," he took her hands and led her into the suite's bedroom, where he had chilled champagne waiting, along with a light, early lunch. Still holding her hands he set her down on the bed and left only long enough to bring the bottle and two glasses over.

He set the bottle and the glasses on the floor next to the bed and toed off his shoes, tucking one bear foot under his other leg. Then he took her hands again. "I wanted to speak with you about all of this, about what you see..." He wasn't sure where to begin, so he let the thought go.

Alicia melted into the kiss. She had never been one to shy away from physical affection and as a Gryffindor wasn’t a complete stranger to spur of the moment displays, but the fact that it was Adrian was new and refreshing. It exciting and made her feel light and happy. “I love to see you smile like this,” she laughed, unable to help herself, not when he was looking at her like this, not when they had spent years building up to this, and the past months toeing the line between what they could and couldn’t and should and shouldn’t.

Intrigued by what he wanted to talk to her about, though, yes, on the journal he had said that there was something he wanted to talk about, she let him lead the way into what proved to be the suite’s bedroom. She looked around them, still impressed with the place as he sat her down, and she watched him bring over the champagne. Glancing down at the bottle and glasses on the floor, she knew what this looked like the prelude to, but seriously doubted that that was what Adrian was leading up to.

She turned until she was facing him, once again struck by how at ease he seemed, how handsome he was and what a shame it was that it was only a very few people who ever got to see him like this. “About what I see..?” she mused slowly, her smile a mix of amusement and confusion as she looked around her. She had seen the suite, the ruins and the change in Adrian’s smile after they had arrived. “The hotel..? You’re thinking of buying the hotel?”

Adrian gave a small laugh and shook his head, "No, though it's not a bad idea," he liked the thought of being able to just whisk off to wherever, whenever he felt like it - much like his parents did. But he also knew he needed to have a home of some sort to come back to - that's the part his parents didn't care as much about.

"I'm not saying this very well, please, I apologize. I meant," he took a deep breath, "What you see this," he indicated between themselves, "as." It wasn't a question he'd ever had to - nor wanted to - ask before, and it felt awkward coming from his mouth. He wasn't even sure if this is something that needed to be done.

Alicia shrugged in something akin to agreement; purchasing the hotel wouldn’t be a bad idea, especially if either one of them knew how to run a hotel. Maybe a hotel was too big a step to take when buying foreign real estate.

“Oh!” she said as he clarified when it was he had meant, and followed it up with an “oh,” embarrassed that she had missed his intention as completely as she had. Looking up at him, her eyes on his, her smile was soft as her fingers threaded through his. “I…” She started, then frown slightly with a small amused chuckle when she found herself without the right words. “I don’t have a word for what you are to me,” she told him honestly. “I know people would say you’re my boyfriend, but that word just sounds too… too innocent or not enough. Lover may be closer, but it’s still not right either. What you are to me is…” she drew in a deep breath and suddenly found that she couldn’t keep her bright smile from happening as a happy wave coursed her just thinking about what she had Adrian had. “You make me feel things I didn’t think I would ever feel again, only they’re completely different without really being it.” Even she knew that wouldn’t make sense, but her love for Daniel felt a lot like what she felt for Adrian, and yet it wasn’t the same, because Adrian was a completely different man. “You’re my best friend, but more. I can’t count the times during a day when I see or hear something that I just can’t wait to share with you, and I miss you when you’re not there.”

Adrian smiled with relief when she reacted well, and his smile melted into a loving gaze as he watched her explain her feelings for him. He nodded, "I know what you mean, if that makes any sense."

"I also know," he had to take a moment to prepare himself, worried more about her reaction here than before, "that I'd like others to know, as well." He watched her face as he continued.

"I know you have a lot to worry about when it comes to that, and you know I'd never put me or us before the twins or your obligations or your family," he meant the Fawleys, and her history, and everything, and hoped she understood, "but I would love if we were able to start maybe letting other people in on this. Does that make any sense at all or am I talking in circles?" He laughed at the last bit, feeling like at some point he should have learned this sort of thing. He was raised in a world where his mother would choose his wife and it was that simple, but then there was the war, and in their world everything changed.

Alicia’s face softened as she watched Adrian. “Not full circles,” she said, a smirk playing on her lips. “Semicircles, perhaps, but not full.” Now that he seemed to have gotten to the point of what he had wanted to talk to her about, it was easier to relax and lighten the mood a little.

Scooting a little closer to him, she raised their joined hands and pressed a kiss to each of his fingers, before she brushed his knuckles against her cheek. “This what you’ve been tying yourself up in knots about?” she asked him with a smile, her eyes on his as she moved their hands back to her lips, letting them brush back and forth over his fingers. Pressing a last kiss to his finger, she lowered their hands again and let her free hand take over the gentle caress.

“First of all,” she started. “I don’t have a lot to worry about; I have a lot to care about. Second…” With a grin, she scrunched up her nose with a chuckle. “Uhm, I would love to begin letting people know, making it public or official or… I don’t know the proper protocol for this, but I want people to know, too.” Alicia paused for a moment, because; “some people already know. Three people, to be accurate, but I get the feeling that a lot more are already suspecting that something’s going on.”

Adrian gave her a cheeky smile and shook his head when she answered him sarcastically. Of course she would. When she kissed his fingers, though, the smile fell from his face as the sensation hit him in the stomach. Her lips were perfect. All he could was nod in answer to her question and when she chuckled - seemingly letting out some of her own nervous energy, he hoped - he let out a whoosh of air he didn't know he'd been holding in.

"Yeah? Which three are these? And if the twins are two of them, I might have to make you pay for that because I've been playing grumpy uncle Adrian and just itching to kiss you goodnight every time I've seen you but haven't been able to do anything about it..." He kissed her then, solidly, sitting on the bed, not really caring or worried about who the three people were. Alicia's kids were her domain, if she wanted to tell them or didn't, that was up to her, and he'd do or be whatever she needed him to do or be. But knowing that she wanted to 'go public' or whatever else they might do next - he had to kiss her right now. Breaking away from her, he leaned down with a smile to pop the champagne bottle and pour them both a glass. "Seeing as we have tonight and tomorrow for sight seeing, I thought you might like to stay in a bit first?" His smile was almost-but-not-quite shy and his words sincere, it surprised him how badly he wanted this to be right.

Alicia knew all too well what Adrian was talking about, because spending time with him – as much as possible – without Isla and Liam seeing that they were more than just Mum and Grumpy Uncle Adrian hadn’t just been hard, it had been nearly impossible. With a smile, she began shaking her head and only just managed to murmur “Not the twins,” before she gave in to his kiss, wanting to make up for all those lost goodnight kisses – and the hello kisses and I-can’t-not-kiss-you-now kisses and all the other kisses. Alicia had a lot of reasons for smiling, but right now, just kissing Adrian was what did it, and she was still smiling when he reached for the champagne. “I want them to be the first ones we tell, and I want you to be there, because they are going to ask questions that I think should be answered by you, not me.”

Accepting the glass from him with a “Thank you,” her smiled almost mirrored his at his question. “You’re asking me if I’m fine with staying in with you instead of going out into one of the world’s supposedly grandest cities, with millennium old architecture, romantic traditions and amazing restaurants; a city I’ve only seen through that window over there?” Quirking an eyebrow at him, as if to say ‘Really?’ she moved closer to him until their legs were pressed together. Gently she clinked her glass to his. “You thought right.” Of course she wanted to see Rome, but Rome had been there for more than a millennium, and was not one of the very, very few things she would ever choose over him.
