RP: Checking In
Who: Susan and Richard

What: A quiet chat

Where: Richard's flat, Clink St, Bankside

When: Wednesday afternoon

Rating: SFW

Susan walked briskly up Clink Street, her heels clicking quietly on the cobbled road. She was here south of the river to check up on Richard and talk to him about some possible business. She'd phoned ahead - much to the bemusement of some of her more conservative colleagues - to see where he was, which is how she found herself walking towards his private residence rather than his office. Ignoring a young idiot who swerved towards her on a vespa, she headed towards the nondescript metal door that led to his flat, and knocked.

"Hello stranger, it's your friendly neighbourhood Susan," she said with a smile. "Here to inspect your wards and ask you about some business."

"I've picked up a little of this and that during my travels," Rich nodded. "Sometimes the little spells are the ones with the most effect. Seriously, if you want to take a close look at my wards here, see how they're done, I'd be glad to show you. I know a lot of people ignore wards, or just throw up a slap-dash job these days. If you don't mind me asking, why bring them up in the first place?"

"Last big job was a resort hotel in Dubai. A million and one little details, any one of which could have derailed the project. Do a Ravemclaw thing and get me lots of lists. Things, contacts, places, all that sort of thing, and I'll put it all together for you and get some quotes and time frames. Send or drop it off at my office and I'll get things rolling with some phone calls to people I know over there."

Susan laughed and shook her head. "Thanks darling but I'm fine. Us Aurors tend to be... Well paranoid is such an ugly word but it rings true in terms of how much attention we place on wards. I'm checking, because you live right smack bang in the middle of an area where a whole bunch of Muggles are being attacked." She made a face and continued, "The attacks are very similar to ones carried out by blood supremacists during the war, and while I was fairly certain you'd have sufficient defences in place in the event of an attack, I wanted to be sure."

She nodded thoughtfully. "It's definitely not something that we need to have happen now but I'll talk to mum about getting the factor to do a detailed report and get it to you." She pulled a face. "I drew the short straw with Harry this week, so I'm testifying in a couple of cases which'll limit my time a bit, but we'll see how far I get."

One eyebrow went up. "One year six months of Auror training. Before your time. Dropped out when He-Who-Pushes-Up-Daisies crew took over the Ministry. Resistance and the Battle of Hogwarts. I know all about paranoia from the inside. Notice the video cameras all over the neighborhood and the quaint and picturesque private security dressed as Peelers? Father and I pay for all that to keep the neighborhood safe and secure. Linked to The Met. Lets us charge higher rents."

Rich sighed. "Any real blood supremicist who still has a hard on from the war would probably be coming after me directly. In which case I'd be discretely dumping some ashes out the back door into the river the next morning and sending a note around to you lot. Don't ever try to force my wards, let's just say. But at any rate, I think you've got a copy cat, not the real thing."

"As long as you say things have been sitting around, guess there's no real rush. My sympathies on the courtroom work, though. Always boring."

Susan laughed and lifted her hands up. "Yes, yes I know. You did half a course of training when Alastor Moody was still alive. I'm not particularly worried about you, nor do I think that they'd hit you with the same level of force they hit, say my Aunt or Moody with - whoever they happen to be - but I do like it when my friends don't get attacked by idiots." She paused and quirked an eyebrow at him. "While I personally appreciate the levels of paranoia, I think I'll refrain from asking how you manage to get away with violating part five of the Police Act. There's some things a girl just doesn't need to know."

"Honestly, at the moment it doesn't look all that likely that anyone will come after you," she said, leaning back more comfortably. "Neither Harry, nor Minister Shacklebolt, nor any other of the main members of the Order or the DA have experienced any increased level of threat. But, you are in the epicentre of the possible situation so there's always the chance that your security may catch something the Ring of Steel misses. Big Brother is watching, but he's not always paying attention, you know?"

She laughed ruefully. "I'll hopefully owl you sometime this week, and thank you. It's going to be a frightfully boring case and the defence spends most of his time trying to look down my top."

Richard shook his head, laughing. "Guess you didn't spot any of them, then. The top hat that goes with the 1860s uniform generally even clues Americans that they aren't real officers. Not at all Bobbyish. Just largish guides and tourist assistants. But it is a thought. I do suspect it would be a little more difficult than it was getting my pistol permit out of the muggle authorities. Appreciate the courtesy, though."

He shrugged. "To be honest, I learned a lot more from a certain disreputable Frenchman I hung out with at the start of the war. Based one of my cover characters on him, truth me told."

"Yeah, the whole thing seems off to me. Why go after muggles? And didn't some kid go a wicket with one? I'll put a word in to the security office, although the dailies had mentioned the attacks before as an item of interest."

He chuckled. "Well, the bloke at least has excellent taste. Got to give him that. I'll get things together for you as soon as I can"

Susan frowned and leaned forward to look at him again. "I only saw a couple of coppers," she admitted blithely. "Also I was slightly confused there, I thought you'd slipped into some obscure Pureblood slang for a moment. I know peelers used to be pogue cant for policeman." She blinked at him several times and then laughed. "You got one of those antique pistol licences? Do you collect them or something? Anyway, consider the question moot."

She quirked an eyebrow at him. "Frenchmen as a whole generally tend to be disreputable, I find," she joked with a smile. "It's a cultural trait. I swear my brother and father still have a bit of the de Bohun swagger in them, even after all these centuries."

"Who can tell, the man's likely a nutter. You're right though, a young lad of twelve smacked him one with a cricket bat, which was good thinking of him." She smiled slightly. "It's really just a precaution. There's a couple of other Aurors making inquiries and checking in on people south of the river at the moment as well."

She snorted disgustedly. "The man's lucky I'm not allowed a wand in the chamber. I swear the head of Law Enforcement nearly threw a shoe at his head this yesterday. Thank you for the help with the imports though, much easier than doing it ourselves."

"Antique? Not exactly." Richard flipped the left side of his suit jacket open, showing Susan where he carried his Walther in a shoulder holster. "Surprised more than one Snatcher during the war. Got in the habit of carrying it during the war so I called in a few favors afterwards. Same way I usually carry two or three wands and a short blade when I'm out and about."

"Fortunately for me," he shrugged, "I can leave most of the courtroom things to the staff solicitors. Contract law is about all we ever deal with. Don't envy you at all."

He chuckled. "Since I'm half French, can't say I disagree with you. Some of Mother's people up in the wine country can be a tad... earthy."

"Anything I can do to help out, let me know. If you need a place to work out of in the neighborhood, I've got a one bedroom ground floor over in the main building I can give you the keys to."

Susan lifted a single brow but decided to let the matter drop. The particulars of how exactly the man had managed to gain a handgun in a country which had banned them weren't really her concern "I imagine it would have been," she said with a little grin. "They're useful for that, more limited then wands but definitely useful."

She shook her head and smiled ruefully. "Trust me, I'd love to leave it to the Inquisitors; but at least mostly it's just about giving statements to the Wizengamot. Nothing too strenuous."

"Earthy is such a useful phrase, don't you find," she remarked inanely.

She nodded thoughtfully then looked at her watch with a grimace. "I suppose I should take my leave then, though I'll be in touch."
