Out of curiosity, you wouldn't ask someone out on a date unless you were interested in them, right? Otherwise, it's just a friendly thing.

It can be very confusing, which is where asking or being clear can be a big help. Even if it's awkward, or you're not both on the same page, at least then you both know and avoid even more awkwardness in the future, or potentially hurting one of you. However, I don't know why it needs to be called a date if it's only a friend thing except that date can encompass a general social engagement, which hanging out with a friend technically is. However, I don't think it's used nearly as much when two or more friends are going out as friends as opposed to when two (or I suppose more, such as a double or triple date) people go out with a romantic or romantic relationship undertone to it.

As for the word itself, if it isn't something you enjoy, I say don't use it unless you want specify romantic intention? I admit to using it with friends, but I make sure that it's known as a friend date or a romantic date just so I don't accidentally mess something up or hurt someone or get hurt by someone.

I'm always going to be clear about my intentions then. Well in case that should ever happen, anyway. I definitely would want to avoid any of that. I suppose you're right, I just thought it was a bit weird, calling things a date when there's no romantic nature. I'm glad it's not just me who's confused by it. I'll have to ask though up front to make sure.

I'm not sure how I feel about the word. I just don't like being confused about social interaction when I'm already confused as it is.
