Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:character: dean thomas, character: ernie macmillan, character: justin finch-fletchley, character: seamus finnigan, character: susan bones

Who: Justin, Ernie, and OPEN to Justin's friends (you may presume Ernie has sent them all invites!)
What: A happy badger birthday to Justin - low-key because some people have to work!
Where: Ernie's flat - food & drinks on the patio, couch and big bed available for cuddlepiles.
When: Monday, September 22, later in the evening (backdated)
Status: OPENish / Ongoing

Because Justin's birthday fell on a weekday, Ernie had decided to save the wild clubbing night for an upcoming weekend, and instead had invited some of their friends over to his place for dinner, drinks, and conversation. He loved entertaining at his Muggle-area London flat - there were twinkling fairy lights out on the patio, which he'd furnished magically (and thankfully the spells weren't set to reverse until after midnight), the bed and sofa were full of pillows and blankets for cuddling, and the place was cleaner than the oft messy Ernie tended to keep it (but if he didn't, what would Hannah have to clean when she came to visit?).

Ernie had also decided to do all the cooking himself with a little help from his Mum, who had stayed for the meal before leaving for the night. He knew that not all of their friends could make it, and some couldn't make it until later, but he was glad to have those that were there around.

But more than anything, this was Justin's day and Ernie was just glad to be able to spend it with his best mate. After dinner, he'd brought out a large store-bought cake topped with sparkling candles for Justin to blow out, then had passed around bottles of wine and soda for people to drink.

It was now after dinner, the food mostly cleared away, and Ernie was sat next to Justin and their friends - life was good. He took the opportunity to stand and hold his glass of wine aloft, calling for quiet before he made a toast.

"To Justin Finch-Fletchley, the best mate a man could ever have. Long may your chimney smoke," he began, quoting an old Scottish blessing his father used to say, but then smirked. "And may you smoke many a long chimney."

Justin laughed and raised his glass infinitely grateful to have such amazing mates. But even more to had Ernie in his life. Without him, Justin would definitely not be there to celebrate this anniversary.

"Thank you, so much everyone for being here. It's.. it's so appreciated." He didn't know if any of them really knew how happy he was right now. It was something that really got to him sometimes. Just the thought that he could very well not be there anymore. Not have any of this in reality.

After things calmed down and people started to mingle a little for the after-dinner party, Justin went to Ernie and smiled genuinely. "Hey, got a minute for me?" he asked, putting his hand on Ernie's elbow.

Touching people had become, overtime, a way for him to know things were real. That he was real.

Ernie had just been refilling his wine glass - among his choices was a nice blackberry wine that he couldn't stop drinking - when Justin took him by the arm. "For you? You can have a whole year. A decade even. Merlin, even the rest of my life - it's all in your hands," he finished with a joking flourish.

"You had a good time, right? Everything to your tastes? Mum didn't say anything too embarrassing while s he was here, did she?"

He shook his head, smiling at Ernie. "Why would you think there is something wrong?" He asked gently, then shook his head again. "No, no. I just.." Justin looked around and knew that it would look bad if the host and the birthday boy both escaped for a moment, but he needed to discuss this before it overwhelmed him.

Justin took Ernie's hand in his and guided his mate towards a secluded, private area where he could talk without being overheard. "Tonight is so amazing, this is exactly what I needed and I wanted to thank you." He said softly.

"I don't know if you realize how much.." He chewed on his lower lip as he looked at Ernie, analyzing him a moment. "I don't know if you realize how much you mean to me, Ernie. How grateful I am, for everything."

Ernie didn't question it, simply went along like he often did with Justin. He figured by now most of their friends saw them as two peas in a pod, not quite in the same way as he and Hannah were but in their own strange Ernie/Justin way. Anyway, Ernie followed until they were far from the noise of conversation and Ernie could hear his friend much better.

He shrugged, showing a rare moment of modesty and bashfulness when Justin thanked him. "Hey, it's the least you deserve. If we weren't working all week, I'd have rented out Finnigan's and had a party like you wouldn't imagine."

Something in the tone of Justin's voice had Ernie focusing completely on him, as if he was going to say something of utmost importance in Ernie's life. "Of course I know. You don't have to thank me - there's nothing else I've ever wanted to do than to be there for you, you know that."

Justin nodded and sighed before cocking his head on the side. "I do. I do need to tell you this because.." he didn't really know himself when that whole thing had started, but he was ready to bet that it was the day he had set foot in the Janus Thickey Ward for the first time.

"Because I really mean it, Ernie. I don't think I'd be here without you. And it's one more birthday that I get to celebrate surrounded by my friends."

He shifted his weight on his feet for a moment, then bit his lower lip. "I went to Battlescars." He admitted softly. "Twice." He hadn't wanted to tell Ernie at first because then would come the question: why? And he didn't feel like answering this because, once again, he had tried to hide something from him.

"Working at the ward it.. it was harder than I thought it would be." By admission, he was pretty much digging two weeks of crap he hadn't told anyone about. "And nothing helps introspection like insomnia, I can tell you."

"Hey, it's one of many, many you'll have," Ernie reassured, for both of them. He didn't even want to think of a world without Justin in it.

His shoulders dropped at hearing how Justin had been affected by working in the ward. And insomnia too? Ernie must have been too distracted by his own happiness at working with Justin that he'd missed it entirely. What sort of friend was he if he'd missed that?

"Battlescars is a good thing. If you need to go, then go - that's what it's there for," he reassured, trying for a supportive smile and squeezing Justin's hand in his. "And I'm sorry, I should have thought of that, warned you or something. How long's the insomnia been? Are you trying potions? Do you need to stay at mine a few nights? That helped sometimes."

Justin shook his head. "No.. it doesn't help." He replied. "I sit there and everyone talks about.." He looked away. He couldn't and wouldn't divulge anything about the meetings. Not just because of the contract, but because it would be like failing the professional oath.

He didn't answer about the potions and seeing a Healer about it wasn't in his plans yet. He had been able to sleep when Seamus had been over and it was it. "I'm not saying this.. Ernie.."

Justin had noticed Ernie's body language and knew his friend so well. By now he was well aware that Ernie's first reaction would be to feel guilty. "I'm not saying that so you'd worry or think that you should have seen it or something." It reminded him of the hospital, when he was first admitted after his release. Or when he was un-Petrified.

"Don't carry the weight of my well-being with you." He sighed and shook his head. "It came to me the other night. Since the moment I step foot in the Hufflepuff Common Room after the Sorting.. You were there. Every time I felt like giving up. Or.. no matter what happened, you took care of me." Justin liked his independence quite a lot, but would always go to Ernie if he needed help with something.

"Part of me.. I didn't.." he lifted his gaze towards the ceiling and and released a breath. "I wouldn't be here.."

Ernie took out his wand to spell a few lanterns that hung around the patio, making them shift colours like a neon sign - yes, the poor boy had a terrible neon addiction, but he so loved the look. With a grin, he stepped back and looked them over with satisfaction before taking up his glass of wine.

He looked up and sighed at being unable to see many stars - that was city living, of course. His one saving grace was the high walls of the patio, as it meant that Muggles couldn't see into his sanctuary (there was also a screening ward placed above it so those on upper floors of nearby buildings couldn't see inside either - to them, it looked like the tar roof of a garage or some such thing).

All in all, it was a good night.

Susan stepped out into the cool night air, just in time to see Ernie change the colour of his lanterns to something that would have made Liberace cackle. "You never did see a bright colour you didn't like, did you Ern," she asked, absently giving him a kiss on the cheek.

She observed him with a half tilted head for a moment. "How's your week been, dear?"

Ernie turned into the kiss and grinned at her. "Well, they look brilliant, don't they? It just means I've fantastic taste in all things - just look at who I have for friends."

He shrugged. "Rather the same old, same old. I'm starting to catch up on some reading - research into spells and potions, that sort of thing, as I've more than enough time to do it at work. And so far I haven't had to put you back together after a day at work, so that's a good thing. And you?" he asked, amicably sliding an arm around hers.

Susan nodded. "They do, I have to admit that they do my dear friend." She threw an arm over him happily. "You're a good friend, throwing this party for Justin."

"You work too hard, you know that right," she said, blithely ignoring the fact that that was the pot calling the cauldron black. "What sort of spells have you been looking into," she said with genuine interest. "I've been working with a Punjabi witch to swap knowledge and it's been fascinating. Tell me more!"

He slid his arm around Susan's waist, squeezing her in a quick one-armed hug. "Any of you would do the same for me, and Justin for us. Though we all know when mine comes around that I make such a fuss about it, I just thought it was nice to make a fuss over Justin. He deserves it."

Ernie rolled his eyes at the oft-spoken comment about his working too hard. "Coming from you of all people," he replied. "I will when you do, how's that for a deal?"

His eyes lit up, however, when she asked about his research and mentioned her own. "Oh, you've got to let me pick your brain on that one day. I've just been reading up on some work done by wizards in Malaysia, South Africa, and Canada who run wards similar to mine. You know, trying to share what we're learning more and more about spell damage and how it affects our patients. So far, nothing really new, but you never know."

"This is true dear," Susan said with a grin. "Besides we all know my birthday's in November so prepare yourself for that." She hugged him back and looked at him archly. "Obviously plans are already afoot for May."

She pouted at him and stamped her foot. "That's not fair," she cried in mock-anguish. "I work hard because if I don't I'll get whoomped."

She laughed easily and patted his arm. "Of course dear. That sounds fascinating actually! I went to a symposium in Australia a few weeks ago and a woman did this amazing counter spell with... it was almost like singing. It was amazing."

Seamus and Open
[info]openbottle
2014-09-24 08:30 am UTC (link)
Seamus had snuck in just before Ernie's speech and grabbed a glass, raising it to Justin. Monday evenings weren't too busy at the pub and he'd left closing to his staff for once so that he could get here before the party wound down completely. He had a small present for Justin which he'd delivery in person - with birthday kisses - later in a more quiet moment. For now, he was content to seek out other friends, especially after the disaster that had been the cuddle party. He'd barely seen anyone, and he felt bad about it still. Even if, as Dean kept insisting, it hadn't been his fault.

"Seems the birthday boy's busy," he observed as he bumped elbows with the person next to him. "Guess I'll just have to talk to you, instead."

Ernie had been away with Justin for several minutes, but he eventually came back to spend time with the rest of his guests. He took a few moments to make sure everyone's wine glasses were full before going to see Seamus.

"Hey, I'm sorry I left for a bit - Justin wanted to thank me," he added with a smile. "How've you been? It feels like it's been ages since we've talked - it's felt so busy lately!"

"Oh, he wanted to thank you, did he?" Seamus asked, waggling his eyebrows. "Lucky you." He winked and then laughed, waving away Ernie's apologies. "Don't worry about it. I just got here so I should be apologising for being late." Which he might have done, if he hadn't prewarned both Ernie and Justin that might be the case. Though they both likely knew anyway. Evenings were difficult for Seamus to get away and his friends were used to him turning up a little behind time.

He sipped his drink and looked around the room and Justin's many smiling friends. It was a nice atmosphere. Hufflepuffs were good at that, in Seamus's experience. "I suppose I've had better weeks," he admitted. He hadn't seen either Susan or Dennis and he wasn't sure who was avoiding who. "We still don't have a full time chef. I've put feelers out and had a couple of people come in to 'interview' but..." But no one he'd clicked with, yet. He shrugged. "Hiring and firing's never really been my strong suit. If I were making enough I'd hire a Human Resources person to do it for me." Then he winced. "Well, except I wouldn't, because I wouldn't trust anyone else to pick staff." He shook his head again, not wanting to think about his own worries just now. "What's been keeping you busy? Secret lover?"

"Hey, no apologizing," Ernie said with a wag of his finger. "The important thing is that you're here, not when you came. We know you've a business to run and I know I wouldn't ever dream of asking you to sacrifice it for us."

His geniality shifted into a compassionate look as Seamus described his week. "It can't be easy dealing with all that shite. I know I couldn't. I'm sure you'll find someone pretty soon - as my Mum says, everything works out in the end. Fate's probably just waiting for the right person to be looking for work."

He laughed at the idea of having some sort of secret lover. "I wish. No, just work. Some weeks it takes more out of me than others, is all. Sometimes, it's all I can do not to crawl under my blankets the moment I get home and never come out for a month. If you ask me, I think the hibernating animals have the right idea."

"I hope fate hurries up," Seamus grumbled. He couldn't help but notice that less and less orders were coming into the kitchen, even in the face of all Bryn and Hannah's hard work. Things might pick back up once he got a new chef, but the longer that took the longer it would take. "Anyway. I didn't come here to worry about work. I came to have fun. Have you got a drink, MacMillan? Just because you're the host doesn't mean you're allowed to neglect your own refreshment."

Seamus patted Ernie's shoulder comfortingly. He worked hard, but he couldn't do what Ernie did. It had taken it out of him enough looking after Dean in those early years after the war, though he hoped Ernie was at least less emotionally invested in his patients than Seamus had been. "But the hibernating animals don't have friends who'd miss them if they disappear for six months," he pointed out, shaking his head. "Guess you'll just have to keep dragging yourself out of bed to spend time with us."

"Not at the moment, but don't worry, I've had a few. But I can't overindulge too much - a good host always makes sure his guests get home safe, right? Plus, I have work in the morning and hangover potions don't always work well enough for my liking."

Ernie chuckled. "I suppose I will, but it would be so much easier to hibernate if my friends would hibernate with me. I've a big enough bed for it."

He took out his wand to accio a glass and a half-full bottle of wine, pouring himself a glass then 'showing' it to Seamus as if to say See? I'm drinking now and it's all your fault. "I think Justin has the right idea," he thought aloud after taking a drink. "Take celebration time to appreciate the people we have in our lives. Things have been so 'normal' these last few years, I sometimes forget there was a war and that we were all part of it. And then something happens to remind me all over again, and I wonder why I didn't come out of it worse off. Do you ever get moments like that?"

Dean and Open
[info]artistdean
2014-09-25 06:17 pm UTC (link)
Dean had, as he'd predicted, been running late to Ernie's party for Justin. He'd been hit by inspiration on Sunday afternoon after remembering the children playing in the park and although he had managed to sleep the previous night he had been hard at work all day. Ophelia had managed to remind him to eat something not long after lunch when she dropped off some coffee, but by the time he looked at the time again he should have already left. Then Ophelia had dropped in to say goodbye for the day and she'd kissed him. It was the first time she'd kissed him on anything other than his cheek and he thought it might have been slightly accidental because of the way he turned his head. But there had been smiling and a touch of blushing on her part, and a couple more kisses.

To cut a long story short he'd turned up part way through dessert and forgotten to pay attention to basically any of the conversation properly. After food he'd wandered his way out to the patio and settled himself on one of the sofas with a glass of something fizzy and non-alcoholic and was trying very hard not to grin like a fool.

Justin ran his hand through his hair and looked around, pretty pleased with the party. It was amazing to have his friends around for one evening and he liked how casual it all was. His parents had tried to plan something for him, but thankfully he had turned them down just in time.. 3 months ago.

Yes, it was how much time was required to plan a birthday party in his family and he was more than glad not to be over there with all of them pretending they cared about him.

Needing some air, though, he walked over to the patio and breathed in deeply. The weather was perfect. After his talk with Ernie, he still wasn't sure if his mate understood what he had tried to tell him after all.

He noticed someone sitting there and he grinned. "Hey Dean," he said softly. "How's it going?"

Dean jumped slightly, having been staring into space, paying attention to very little when Justin addressed him.

"Oh, hey, Justin," he said, smiling. "Not so bad, pretty busy, how about you? Aside from the birthday of course. Er, Happy Birthday," he added belatedly. Of course that was the point he realised he'd forgotten to bring the cupcakes he'd made for Justin with him. He tended towards being bad at presents for most people, but decent cupcakes didn't tend to go down badly with many people.

"I, er, forgot your present. You should let me know what sort of cupcakes you like and I'll send you some. I had some to bring and forgot when I was running late," he said, apologetic.

Justin smiled at Dean. "Thanks." He said softly, leaning in against the wall nearest to him. He had refilled his wine before walking out to the patio and wondered if it was such a good idea. Ah well, Ernie had mentioned extra space for people to crash in, so he might take him up on his offer.

"Busy too, I suppose. I'm in the middle of a 9 days stretch at the hospital, I really wish I could have a day off right about now, but hey, that's work huh?" He told Dean, then heard cupcakes and of course his sweet tooth was getting the best of him.

"I'm easily pleased with cupcakes, really. The only thing I don't like are weird flavors like avocado, beet or tomato." He chuckled. Justin had never seen these flavors before, but surely someone had tried them, right?

Dean wrinkled his nose at the idea of working so many days straight in an environment where lives depended on you. It was nothing he ever wanted to experience really. At least he could take days off from art when he wanted or needed to.

"So the chocolate and beetroot ones are out, although they can be a bit dry to be honest, but regular lemon or raspberry should be fine. Or raspberry with lemon topping. I can do that," he said with a smile.

"Oh, sorry I was late by the way, I hope the rest of the food was as good as dessert," he said. He couldn't help but flash back to the extra reason for his delay and have to suppress another silly smile.

"Oh raspberry and lemon.." Just thinking about it made him want one, but he was too full and shouldn't even consider it at all. "But really, does the chocolate and beetroot one tastes like beet?"

Justin shook his head. "Hey, no problem. You are here right now that's what's important. Everyone has lives, it's not like we're a bunch of kids with no responsibilities." He said, then he shrugged. "I would't call it late anyway." He tilted his head on the side a little and smiled.

"So how's it going for you lately?"
