I've been practising chess with one of my coworkers and my set is getting annoyed at me for 'over-using' them. My king today refused to walk onto the board, telling me he was on strike. This is an inherited chess set, my uncle was a previous owner. Anybody else have finicky chess sets? Should I be looking into a new one? More importantly, will my king still be on strike for the chess matches this week?

Is there anything you can do to mollify him? Perhaps giving him an extra cleaning, or offering him private time with the queen or rook of his choice?

We're past mollifying. I've moved to threats. He's either going to get on the board at the next Finnigan's match, or he's going straight to the cauldron to get melted down into a barrette.

At least then he would be of use to you. I hope he will make you an attractive barrette.

That was entirely my logic - having him be of use to me. I'm pleased you saw it

Ron says the players don't trust you until you prove yourself, or something like that. You've got to show them you're the boss I guess? Ron's the expert though, you should ask him.

I've won plenty of matches with them; I think they're just annoyed I'm using them for strategy and practise, rather than an actual game. Though I don't see how they think it will remedy, if they refuse to play.

I'm available for a game or two if you'd like. An opponent other than Ron is something I definitely look forward to.

Tell him you'll start playing with the other side and let a beginner practice with his.

If that doesn't work, you might need a new set entirely.

That sounds more viable than threats, thank you.

Good sets are hard to find. I might have to miss this week of chess.

It is a threat, just one that means something to them. They don't feel physical pain.

You can use mine, though I can't promise they'll obey you.

It's been long enough since I played that I'm not sure, actually. But it sounds like you've really soundly pissed him off.
