Rewards for doing the books
Who: Charlie Weasley, Seamus Finnigan, ?Dean Thomas, open
What: Doing the book deserves a drink
Where: Finnigan's - Common Room
When: Late afternoon/early evening
Rating: NSFW - language

After spending his 'weekend' (Monday and Tuesday to everybody else) relaxing, Charlie spent his now traditional Wednesday afternoon looking over the books. He had spent time running through and comparing the takings from the bar, the cloakroom, and the door with previous weeks, and looking at the days against one another. It looked like things were on track for him to pay back the small loan he'd taken out from Gringotts to supplement his own investment in plenty of time, which the goblins always appreciated. He noted, with pleasure, that numbers and profits were steady, if not rising slightly after the initial drop off after the opening weekend.

Now, however, it was time for a drink. After all the wrangling with numbers his head was starting to spin slightly and drinking his own merchandise was only going to hurt his profit margins so he closed up the books and warded both his office and the club itself and set off for the short walk to Finnigan's.

Arriving he made his way to the bar and dropped himself on a free stool, feeling the tension of business begin to drop away from him in the cosy surroundings of the pub.

Seamus was tired. He'd woken up early than he'd like - and not in the best of circumstances. He'd taken the early shift, knowing others were coming in to cover the evening. Now, though, he was officially off duty - but he was still standing on the staff side of the bar, serving the occasional drink. A line of tension between his shoulders ached terribly, his feet hurt and there was something wrong with his left heel which made it difficult to walk smoothly.

Deep down, he knew that the minor aches and pains of bar work were only exaggerated today because of his mood, but that didn't stop him from feeling them. He arched his back in a stretch just as Charlie sat down and flushed, pulling his t-shirt back down over the thin strip of skin that he'd briefly exposed.

"What can I get you?" he asked, forcing unfelt cheerfulness into his tone. "And please, please don't say a burger because we're out. Somehow."

"Alcohol," Charlie said with feeling as Seamus made his way over. "Preferably beer in pint form. Firewhiskey also works," he said, rubbing slightly at the ache between his eyes that staring at paperwork for most of the afternoon had caused. "Although if you've got chips still I wouldn't say no. Fucking paperwork." He muttered the last part. Research had also generated a fair amount of paperwork, but it was far more interesting that columns upon columns of figures.

He shifted on the stool, bringing his feet up to rest on the bar, glancing down to check his prosthetic foot had settled where he wanted it to. "You look like you've had a long day," he said, recognising the stretch Seamus had been doing as he came in as one that helped after a full shift on his feet.

Seamus nodded, relief lightening his expression to something more genuine. Even without a full time chef he'd never be stupid enough to let the pub run out of chips. He pulled Charlie a pint of his preferred beer before stepping away to the kitchen to shout for some chips. "I know the feeling," he admitted, groaning slightly as he remembered that he had a pile of paperwork waiting for him in his tiny study. He'd get round to it another day. "Chip'll be along in a minute."

He shrugged one shoulder as he leaned against the bar. "And it's not over yet." Technically, his working day was over. He could escape to his flat any time he wanted. It just... didn't really seem worth it. His flat was empty, at least here there were people. "Was it just a general 'fuck paperwork' feeling, or was there something wrong?" he asked. "I could probably help out with the latter. I'm pretty sure I made every mistake going in the first few months here, I worked out how to untangle them all."

Charlie picked up the beer Seamus had delivered and took a long draught. He could only imagine somewhere like the pub generated more paperwork than Wingbeat did, simply by virtue of serving food and being open more days and made a face. "Thanks," he said.

"I'm lucky, I guess, only open three days so far, but the paperwork is a fucking nightmare. I mean just in general. The dragons came with paperwork too, but at least that shit was interesting sometimes!" He pulled another face and took another draught of his pint. "I didn't make any fuckups that I haven't already made and worked out how to sort, at least not today."

"There are days when I'm in the mood for it," Seamus admitted. "Though not very often." There was, sometimes, satisfaction to be had in sitting down and making all the figures add up, in seeing profit and increased customer base and the growing number of groups and activities. There was even a perverse sort of pride in untangling his own mistakes and making everything come right in the end. That was when time tended to get away from him, when Dean and Susan would appear and ask when he'd last eaten or slept.

The chips arrived and Seamus pushed them towards Charlie before summoning the salt and pepper shakers. After several too-salty portions of chips last week he'd told the staff to stop trying and just bring them to the table plain. "Three days so far?" he asked, interested. "Are you planning on more?" It was nice to have Charlie's still open after he'd finished his shift, and gave him somewhere to send customers who weren't ready to go home.

"I had to set myself a day for it so it gets done. So I decided since my Wednesdays are like Mondays for normal people I could get on with it and the week could only get better," he shrugged philosophically. It wasn't that he found paperwork especially difficult too often, but after a life spent outside it could be incredibly dreary.

He pulled the bowl of chips slightly closer, sprinkled them with salt and grabbed one. "Mmm," he said through a mouthful of hot chip and swallowed before continuing. "I mean, maybe. I'm doing okay, you know? but this three day week plus paperwork and deliveries is a bit shit," he shrugged. "I'm just used to being busy and it's not, well, it's not like dragons." He swigged more of his beer and shrugged again. "But just adding another day seems a bit, dull."

Seamus had to admit that sounded like a pretty good system. Far better than his waiting for the mood to take him and ending up working right before the deadline. He wondered, not for the first time, how Charlie was really dealing with his change in circumstances. Seamus was no therapist, but he'd been running Battlescars long enough to know what grief and loss could do to a person. He just didn't feel like he knew Charlie well enough to talk about it.

"Do what I did," he suggested instead. "Add something specific. It'll be a draw to customers as well as giving you something to do." He tried to think of something he could suggest to make his point. He couldn't exactly recommend another gobstones club, or any of the other ideas he had for his own business. "What about specific dance nights? Salsa or something. You could ask Ernie, he's an expert in that sort of thing." He thought of the clubs he'd been to and the various themed nights he'd either seen advertised or attended (sometimes by accident). "Muggles have all sorts of special nights in clubs. Traffic light parties, silent discos..." Neither of these were really things that would apply to the magical world, Seamus realised as he spoke them. "There's always drag night, though that's more in gay clubs."

"Oh, good idea, I like the idea of something specific. I've been to some muggle places, for fun, and for research more recently, but there's not really been anything I thought could work that I've seen, not in the long term. I think I'd like to do something that's constant every week, then add in theme nights every so often on regular nights. Does that make sense?" He frowned. It was one of those things he'd been thinking about, but he was yet to hit on an idea that would work for both him and the club in general.

He ate a couple of chips while letting his thoughts about possible nights drift. "Drag nights could be fun, I've seen a couple, but do you think people would get it? The first time I saw one, I didn't know what the fuck was going on. And as far as purebloods go my lot are pretty into Muggle shit. Though I guess most people are half-blood so they might have a better idea."

"Okay, so tossing aside general ideas, what would you want?" Charlie felt he was missing some angle somewhere, especially since he had no interest in a lot of the hooking up and flirting that most people seemed to want to engage in. It left him a bit at sea if there was some angle there he was failing to recognise.

"Perfect sense," Seamus agreed as he scooped a few peanuts into his mouth. It was the way he preferred to work too, regularly weekly activities with one-offs reserved mostly for his friends and their celebrations. He shifted closer to the bar as the rest of his staff started to get busy with after-work customers. He was off-the-clock, and having an interesting conversation. They could do without him.

He shook his head. "Probably not. And with magic it's almost too easy." He had never looked into it, but he was sure there were all sorts of charms and partial-transfigurations a man could use to give himself a woman's appearance for a night. It wasn't quite the same, though he did snort with amusement as he imagined himself foisting that research onto Dominic.

"What would I want?" he said, surprised at the question. It wasn't a difficult one to answer. "A regular gay night. I'm sure there are gay wizarding clubs somewhere, but..." He shrugged. "Your place is convenient. I don't have a lot of free nights to go searching for one." He pushed a hand through his hair. He made an expansive hand gesture. "Not just gay. 'Queer' might be a better word. Or 'LGBT' if you don't mind explaining muggle terminology to people. I've been thinking of starting a group, actually."

"Oh, that's true. Shit, I'd never thought of it like that. All that skill to...huh, there were some incredibly realistic looking women. I'd half forgotten the whole no magic thing," he said, drinking some more of his pint. "Yeah, plus I don't know if there'd be a call for it."

Charlie tilted his head, and began to nod slowly. "That could work. The LGBT thing covers everyone who isn't straight, right?" he said, not quite sure of the exact terms, but familiar with the general concept. It was yet another group where his own preferences, or lack thereof, didn't quite fit in, but he remembered trying to find a man to try sex with and how badly it had gone in a regular club. "You think there'd be enough call for it for every week?"

Seamus grinned and nodded. "Not that it wouldn't take skill in the magical world, but... a different kind of skill." Though the putting on an act part would likely be the same. No matter how many magical transformations you'd effected it would all be lost if you still sauntered like a bloke.

"There's enough call for it that Dean keeps prodding me to put up a rainbow flag," he answered with a shrug. "Honestly, I'd be happy with one night a month, or every two weeks." Anything would be better than nothing, and at least in a wizarding club there'd be some hope of going home with someone. Seamus knew that there was nothing muggle that could explain away his scar. "I've seen LGBT+ thrown around as a term," he offered. "If you really want to cover everyone except the broomstick-straight."

Trailing one of his chips thoughtfully through a trail of salt he considered the possibilities. "I could do a couple of test nights. Wouldn't take much extra decoration, just a few flags, I remember them," he mused, mostly to himself. "Romi'd be pleased, I bet."

After the owl that morning Dean had set himself a very loud alarm. He still wasn't exactly sure what prompted the owls but when he got them Seamus always seemed more pleased than usual the next time he saw him. It had taken him a while to catch on, but eventually he'd just worked out it was easier to turn up as soon as he reasonably could.

He'd spent the day with a slight feeling of discomfort buzzing at the back of his mind, right through from arriving at the studio, impromptu lunch with Ophelia in the kitchen, and it only abated as he stepped into Finnigan's not long after the evening crowd had started to build up.

He spotted Seamus right away, as he could in most rooms which weren't packed, he was standing by what looked like Charlie Weasley at the bar. He stepped up and came up on the far side of the stool to Charlie's left, offering them both a smile, although it was mostly directed at Seamus. "Hey," he said in greeting.

Seamus was just mulling over Charlie's last words when he spotted Dean. Relief flooded him, easing every tension he'd been aware of carrying, and several he hadn't even known about. It was irrational, he'd known Dean was alright - could recognise his handwriting anywhere. Still, knowing a feeling was irrational didn't necessarily stop him from feeling it.

"Hey," he greeted back, resisting the urge to reach over the bar to touch and make absolutely sure Dean was really there. "I'm not really working, you want to head upstairs?" He shot an apologetic look at Charlie. "We can talk about this later?" he suggested. "Give you time to think about it, then if you've got any questions." He shrugged, not sure how familiar Charlie was with LGBT clubs or the scene in the wizarding world.

Charlie looked up something caught Seamus' attention, pleased to see him smiling more than he had been only moments earlier. He raised a hand at Dean's greeting, having just put the chip he'd been pushing around into his mouth.

He shrugged and waved Seamus away. "Shit, you're not working? Don't stay on my account. I need to think logistics and talk to the staff anyhow." He was considering putting out a note in his journal to gauge interest as well.

He moved to finish his up his pint as Dean nodded in agreement and made his way behind the bar, raising a hand to them both. "See you soon."

"I was hanging around anyway," Seamus assured Charlie, not wanting him to feel that he'd kept him against his will. Far from it. It was habitual now to stand behind the bar and interact his customers - he liked being able to do it when his attention wasn't constantly diverted. "I'll see you around."

Seamus walked close to Dean on the stairs up to his flat, shoulder occasionally bumping into the very real weight of Dean's. "You want some food?" he asked. "I actually went shopping this morning." Mostly because the hours between waking and the pub opening had seemed impossibly long and he'd been too restless to settle to paperwork. "I can make spag bol or chicken with mushroom sauce or... stew would probably take too long." He didn't move immediately to his kitchen, unable to tear himself from Dean's side just yet. "It's not even my day to check in on you, and I'm still willing to provide you with food."

"Sure," he said, shrugging. "I only had a sandwich for lunch. And whatever you feel like, you know I'll eat pretty much anything. I'm impressed you shopped though," he teased, nudging Seamus' shoulder a bit. Much like himself Seamus' shopping habits could be described as sporadic. It had been known for Dean to have to visit the 24 hour Tesco for ingredients when he was cooking in the middle of the night because he'd run out of essential things like flour and forgotten to replace them.

He rolled his eyes at the mention of the rota. "I was due a break, it's not like it's crunch time quite yet, I'm not doing so badly at the looking after myself thing so far. Honestly." He was trying to sound indignant, although in reality it was a little more plaintive than he'd planned.

Seamus made a hum of agreement. He was already close to Dean's side and it was easy to slip an arm around him and press his forehead briefly to Dean's shoulder. The contact, feeling Dean breath against him, was reassuring and Seamus was able to finally shake off the last vestiges of doubt. Dean was fine. A little whiny, but largely fine.

"You always say that," Seamus pointed out, not letting go of Dean just yet. "Every single time you put on a show, or get working on a project or start worrying about money. And every time we ignore you, and we always will so stop complaining and let us love you." He frowned a little as he thought of Luna, who already had quite enough looking after to do, and Susan who was going through her own hard time. "Or let me, anyway. I've got nothing but time."

Dean's arm automatically wrapped around Seamus too, appreciating the sense of calm it brought. Just what he needed when his head kept getting full of shows, or had a bad day.

"Yeah, I know, but you know I'm an independent git. Told Susan that too, at the dinner party," he said, the thought of her invitation still working away in his mind. He smiled, at what he could see of Seamus' face. "'Course I let you love me, you let me right back. It is how we function and attempt to slowly drive other people crazy," he smirked a little as he finished. Sometimes, just sometimes, he played it up a little just to mess with people who thought they were together.

"Did you?" Seamus asked, trying to remember if he'd been there for Dean reminding Susan of his independence. He didn't think so, but possibly he'd been a little too relaxed to give his full attention to everything. "Was she badgering you about eating habits?" He smirked at his own pun - though it was hardly new - before giving Dean once last squeeze and finally moving away.

He got out the ingredients for his chicken with mushroom sauce, just like his mam had taught him and set them on the counter. "Ahh, yes," he agreed. "I'll never forget the time Susan sat me down for a lecture that ended with 'Seamus, you love him' and was utterly flummoxed when I said 'yes'." He grinned. It was one of few times he felt he'd truly had the upper hand. Because of course he loved Dean, it was just that that didn't have to mean what their friends thought it did. "Speaking of driving people crazy... Susan won the bet. Has she told you what payment she's planning to collect from me?"

Dean just rolled his eyes at the terrible, old pun. He'd heard it plenty of times before. He was just thankful there were less lion based puns around. "No, well, yes, she did mention my eating habits but it was part of a bigger thing." He went to slouch against the end of the counter and watch Seamus work, his arms folded. "She cornered me in the kitchen and asked me to move into one of the spare rooms." He sighed, unfolding one of his arms from across his chest and scratched at his head. He still didn't really know what to do about it. He was resistant to the idea in general, but it did seem like it would be good for Susan. Then again he had to look after himself as much as he could, no matter how hard his friends tried to do so many things for him.

He couldn't help but smile and give a little huff of laughter at Seamus' description of Susan's lecture. He'd had a pretty similar experience himself. "Yeah, I think she did yours first, she wasn't too surprised when I said 'of course I do'." He pushed off the counter and set about making himself some tea, working around Seamus easily. He groaned as he was reminded of the bet. "No, she's not told me anything, Merlin only knows what she's come up with."

"She asked you to move in? You-" Seamus cut himself off, biting the inside of his lip hard. It wasn't his place to tell Dean he couldn't move in with Susan. Weren't they just talking about Dean's independence? He fixed his attention on his knife, slicing the mushrooms into far neater slices than he would normally bother with. A moment later, he took a breath, still not looking at Dean as he leaned against the counter. It wasn't easy to casually ask, "Do you want to move in with her?" Not when all he wanted was to push the idea far far away. He wasn't going to examine why it made him so uncomfortable. It wasn't as if he wasn't welcome at Susan's, or as if Dean would stop coming over just because he had a home with someone else in it to go to... would he? He probably wouldn't come over as much... He wouldn't need to, but that should be a good thing, shouldn't it? He'd still come over just to hang out sometimes, when Seamus invited him.

His throat was suddenly too tight and he headed to the fridge for a bottle of cider, navigating around Dean as he made himself tea. He cracked the top off the bottle against the edge of the counter and took a long swallow. Better. "Don't know why she bothered with you when I already told her." He set to pan-frying the chicken, the cider on the counter by his side. "I'd guess she hasn't been thinking about it much the last few days, but you know she will when she's feeling herself again." He didn't like the waiting, but he knew Susan wouldn't really make him do anything that hurt him.

"Yeah, she did," he said, focussing on making his tea. He needed to do something with his hands. At the time the request had blind-sided him but now... now it made him feel uncomfortable in the extreme. "She made all these arguments about how my flat is terrible and she doesn't mind all my issues, and she's feeling lonely in such a big house, but as much as I don't mind staying over because she drags me out of the studio and shoves me into the spare bed," he paused his agitated talking and took a deep breath. "I love her like a sister, and she's the only one other than you who would actually make me consider it, but honestly I don't think I can. I don't want to re-work all my coping mechanisms, especially not in the middle of getting ready for a show. That's got to be pretty much the definition of a stupid idea."

He went and perched himself on a stool, fiddling with his teacup for something to do, half a thought debating whether to go and light his candle. In the end it was several more moments before he spoke again, having pulled a sketchbook out of one of his pockets and resized it with his wand. "I don't know either," he said, starting to sketch Seamus working with a stick of charcoal hidden between the pages. "I think maybe she was thinking she could make at least one of us see her way," he mused. He scratched at his face, leaving a faintly visible smudge of charcoal on his cheek before continuing his agitated sketching.

"Yeah? I haven't seen her in a few days, saw the journal thing about coming for a drink about five minutes before falling asleep. What's going on?"

At first, Seamus thought he was seeing his own anxiety reflected in Dean — and felt bad for not being more supportive. As his friend spoke, though, it became obvious that Dean was uncomfortable with the idea purely for his own reasons. That just made Seamus feel worse, for not thinking about how Dean would feel before running away with his own worries. Once the chicken had been safely transferred to the oven and the mushrooms were browning in butter he moved to stand beside Dean, working an arm around his waist and keeping his eyes carefully diverted from whatever Dean was sketching. "If you put it like that, she'll understand," he said. Susan meddled, but she did want what was best for them both. Maybe Susan could use someone to live with, though... Seamus would ponder that later.

"Not one of her better ideas," he muttered, somewhat darkly. He tried to pull his mind away from thinking about the way Susan's interfering could have gone much worse than it did. It hadn't, so what was the use in worrying? The mushrooms were sizzling and Seamus flicked his wand at a nearby spoon to stir them so he wouldn't have to leave Dean just yet. The contact soothed them both, normally, and he felt like maybe they both needed it tonight. "I don't know the details," he admitted. "But I was here when she and Harry and Lavender were drinking and it didn't look good. Gave her a hug, but then I had to get back to work."

Dean sighed, relaxing into Seamus' side and resting his hand, especially now his subject had moved. "Yeah, I guess, but I said I'd think about it, so I still have to bring it up with her." He tucked his head into Seamus side. "I actually thought about it, which I half didn't want to, but she's family, she deserves that much, but I can't do it." He was sort of sad that he wouldn't be able to do it, he adored Susan, but he really didn't think it would be good for his mental health, especially at the moment.

"Yeah? I should make sure she gets a hug when she's on duty for me, I guess. I'd say she can have cookies but I've been sleeping like the dead." Not that that was always a good thing, it usually ended up meaning he would get an absolutely horrific nightmare at some point.

Seamus didn't have to move much to add his other arm to their tangle of limbs - hugging Dean as much as he could when one of them was sitting on a stool and the other was standing. He had to stretch a little to rest his chin on Dean's head but he managed it. "And now you've thought about it," Seamus said, his tone making it obvious that that was final. "And when you tell her, she's not going to mind." He tightened his arms around Dean, wishing he could convince him with mere words that everything was going to be okay.

Dean's words brought back images only too recently preying on Seamus's mind and he shuddered - but didn't let go. Dean was alive. Alive and well and no one was looking to change that, not anymore. "Some people think sleep is a good thing," he pointed out mildly, even though they were both well acquainted with the ways it could be the opposite. "We'll get her up here for a group hug at some point. Round up as many as we can. Turn my flat into the Hufflepuff common room for a night." He smiled at the image of all his friends squishing into his small space together. It was definitely a good idea. "For now, I prescribe Finnigan's Famous Chicken and Mushroom Sauce followed by cuddles on the couch. Sound good?"

Dean went to wrap a second arm around Seamus but looked at his fingers and made a face at the charcoal smudges. "Yeah, I know."

Dropping the subject, Seamus wriggled away and returned to his saucepan, adding soured cream and various other ingredients until the sauce was actually sauce-like in consistency. "Nearly ready," he announced. "You want to eat at the counter or on the couch?"

"Counter, no couch, let me wash my hands first though," he wriggled his smudged hands in Seamus' direction, tucking the charcoal in the sketchbook and leaving it on the counter as he stood up.

"Smells good too," he said, looking over Seamus shoulder on the way to the sink. He moved along and washed up quickly, then waved the plates down and warmed them slightly with magic.

"Shit," Seamus said, pulling the mushroom sauce off the heat. He'd realised once Dean had stopped distracting him with cuddles that he should probably have made some kind of accompaniment to their meal. Potatoes would have been good, but there was no time for that now. "I need to make some rice." A few flicks of his wand set the water to boiling and kept the sauce warm while he measured out the grains of right.

Once that was done, he turned and gave Dean an apologetic look. "There'll be a slight delay."

"Ah," said Dean, realising what Seamus had forgotten. He snickered when Seamus turned around. "That's okay, just set a timer for the rice and we can cuddle while we wait." He tipped his head and gestured with it towards the couch.

"C'mon," he said. "Not the worst mistake we've ever made with food." He wandered over to the couch and kicked off his boots with a quick flick of his wand to undo the laces.

Seamus was annoyed at his own absent-mindedness, especially when he was supposed to be taking care of Dean - but not annoyed enough to turn down cuddles. He set the timer and carried Dean's tea and his own bottle of cider over to the couch. His battered trainers came off without much effort - he hadn't been bothered abut doing or undoing laces for months now. Mostly just forced his feet in in the mornings until the trainers had given up all resistance.

"Knew there was a reason I kept having you around," he teased as he settled on the sofa with an arm stretched along the back of it and plenty of space for Dean beside him. "Can't be as bad as the time I tried to slow roast the lamb," he agreed - then his eyes widened briefly and he flicked his wand towards the oven, turning down the heat. "Crisis averted," he said sheepishly.

Dean took his tea, with a quick word of thanks and settled comfortably beside Seamus, not quite plastered to his side, but sitting close and resting against him. "There are many reasons you keep me around, I am an excellent person," he said teasingly. "Plus I have too much blackmail material by now," he said, waggling his eyebrows.

As Seamus made a sudden dive for his wand to turn the oven down he snorted. "And this is why I mostly cook for you. My fuck ups may be spectacular but they're rare. Weird flavour combos less so, I admit." Dean's usual method of deciding to throw extra things at his recipes sometimes worked out amazingly, sometimes was weird, occasionally plain disgusting.

"You are a terrible person." He shook his head at the thought of all the blackmail Dean likely had on him. "I don't even like to think about how you could ruin my life if you ever stopped putting up with me." For more than one reason, and potential blackmail wasn't high on the list. "I've got just as much on you, though. You're not immune from embarassing mistakes, handsome." He didn't even notice that somewhere during their two week bet he'd picked up Susan's nickname for Dean.

Seamus briefly considered compiling a list of Dean's fuck ups, but decided he couldn't be bothered. "You are a god in the kitchen and I bow down to you," he teased instead.

Dean decided to take the exceedingly mature route and responded to Seamus' teasing by sticking his tongue out. "Whatever you say, whatever you say, you love me really."

He gulped down a large amount of his cooling tea and grinned. He'd been working hard, this was exactly the sort of way he wanted to end his day. Good food, good company, and cuddles. Not that he wasn't thinking of possibly heading back to the studio, but for now this was just where he wanted to be.

Seamus placed his cider carefully on the side table while deciding how to enact his revenge for this obvious slander of his good name. Eventually he settled for poking Dean's cheek with his free hand. His fingers lingered slightly, brushing the charcoal from earlier away. When he realised what he was doing he didn't snatch his hand away, but he did let it drop relatively quickly.

The timer sounded and Seamus pushed Dean forward so he could get up and tend to the food. A few minutes later, he returned with chicken, sauce and rice for two. "No vegetables," he observed as he belatedly realised it. "Why do I always forget something?"

Dean's automatic grin and chuckle at the poke of Seamus' finger stuttered slightly as his finger brushed away something he assumed was charcoal. His tongue poked out again, but this time only to wet his lips, and then the moment was gone and Seamus' hand was falling away. Between one blink and the next everything had returned to normal.

Dean shrugged at the observation. "We could have fruit for pudding, or just conveniently forget and pretend our mothers wouldn't yell at us if they knew." He grabbed his plate and sniffed in the rich scent, shuffling slightly to give Seamus a tiny bit more room to make eating easier.

"You assume I have fruit in the flat?" Seamus asked as he snuggled back in beside Dean, balancing his plate on his lap and tucking in without hesitation.

He flicked the wireless on so they had something to listen to while they ate - even if it was just the news. After a bite of chicken and rice he gave a happy sigh. This was normal, him and Dean eating dinner and teasing one another. He could be fairly confident he wouldn't have anymore nightmares tonight.

"Well you apparently have vegetables, so I assumed there's be some fruit around as well," he said, shaking his head slightly at his apparent failure of logic. Then he scooped up some rice, poked the end of his fork into the sauce and transferred it to his mouth. Immediately he started to blink rapidly, opening his mouth and trying to cool it down by waving his hand.

"Oops," he said sheepishly after he'd managed to swallow.

Seamus snorted. "So keen to try my cooking you burned you mouth?" he teased, offering Dean the bottle of cider to cool down - one swallow wouldn't affect the potions as far as Seamus knew. "You're ridiculous."

He shrugged off Dean's comment about the fruit. "I buy fruit, and then it just goes soft and moudly because I might remember to eat one peach in a week but there's no way I'm going to remember to eat four or five. At least I can put vegetables in real food."

"'tup," Dean replied, grabbing the bottle and taking a smallish gulp of the cool liquid then sticking his tongue out to finish cooling it down. He crossed his eyes trying to see the end, then snorted at how ridiculous he must look and sucked his tongue back in. "Thanks."

"So buy bananas and when they get too black send 'em to me and I'll make cake with them. I get your point though."

Seamus sat back so he could watch Dean go cross-eyed, muffling his giggles in his fist and trying not to dislodge the plate from his lap. "How can I shut up when you go and prove my point so beautifully?" He peered at Dean's tongue before he put it away. "No damage, so far as I can tell. If you want a thorough check you'll have to ask someone else." He wriggled his eyebrow suggestively, certain in the knowledge Dean would not be taking him up on this suggestion.

"But I don't always want bananas," he pointed out as if this were a really serious conversation. "Also, I've decided I don't actually like grapes. They're really convenient and I'll eat them but they just don't taste that nice."

"Yeah, yeah, whatever," Dean said, brushing Seamus off with a wave of the hand still holding his fork. "I'll live, just a bit scorched. Apparently I'm hungrier than I thought." He just rolled his eyes at Seamus' suggestion. It wasn't like that was going anywhere with anyone at the moment.

Dean started to eat again, very carefully blowing on his food to make sure it was cool before it went into his mouth. "Huh, okay. No grapes for you then." Some of their conversations were incredibly random. This appeared to be just another example.

Seamus nodded seriously - he was like that with soup, never patient enough not to scorch himself. He didn't eat quite as carefully as Dean, but he did endeavour to have some rice with each mouthful of sauce which helped cool it down. He smile, satisfied with his work of feeding his hungry best mate. "This is what you have us for."

Seamus waved his bottle of cider. "Not no grapes. They're still the easiest fruit to just eat without really thinking about it, you know?" It was a thought that made perfect sense in his head. Peaches, pears, bananas, apples - you had to really commit to eating one, it could take several minutes (time Seamus often didn't have). Grapes you could just pop into your mouth until they were all gone. "I don't want to get scurvy."

"Hey, I managed to get myself out of the studio all on my own today!" Dean protested. He wasn't going to point out that he'd done it because of his alarm, or the owl. Plus sometimes he managed that, even when he was stressed.

"Okay, so some grapes then, Mr. Contrary," he said, shooting Seamus a look was meant to say 'you are being an unhelpful idiot'. "Besides, you could drink juice, it's easier." Dean was admittedly rather fond of fruit and tended to keep some at the studio. Not only was it a handy snack you could usually eat while painting it also came in handy as props or still-life material. Admittedly it did sometimes go off a bit when he forgot to eat.
