Speak Easy
Who: Open to invited guests. Please tag your characters.
What: Dean's birthday, booze, bad behaviour?
Where: Leo Dall's Speakeasy (aka The Roost)
When: Monday 24th August, 6.30pm onwards
Rating: I'm gonna put an NSFW warning for language on this from the get-go due to the high amounts of alcohol being consumed.

With a little help from Ron, George, Susan and a lot of help from Dominic, everything was ready. Invited guests would give the password at Weasley's Wizard Wheezes and be guided towards the floo fire where they'd be offered a portkey disguised as a standard powder container. The portkey would whisk them to the Roost - charmed to look like a prohibition bar. The lack of doors or windows made the room feel genuinely secret, and the extra effort of the portkeys had been totally worth it in Seamus's mind. Bowls of the jewel-toned two-hit fig punch rested on the bar and the tables for easy access, but if that didn't appeal there was also a cocktail list of 1920s cocktails to choose from. Unsurprisingly, the music was 1920s jazz and Dominic had set a sound barrier between the two halves of the room so that neither became uncomfortably loud.

Early: Lucy and open

Lucy had been a little surprised to be invited to Dean's birthday. She'd only met him once and hadn't expected to have made that much of an impression. She supposed living with Susan had something to do with it, and either way it was very nice of him. Not knowing Dean well enough to get him a present suited to his interests, she'd looked out something appropriate to the theme of the party - and landed on what she thought was a pretty damn perfect present. Not only was it art deco, but it was an obvious reference to the way they'd met. She just hoped Dean wasn't the type to think it was 'too girly'.

After finishing off her work for the day, Lucy had flooed home to change into her 1920s-inspired outfit. She got a few odd looks walking down Diagon Alley, but was greeted cheerfully by a red-haired wizard at the shop and promptly arrived in an amazing bar-space. After she'd grabbed herself a drink, she looked around for anyone looking lonely. "This place is amazing," she said, by way of greeting.

Angelina too had been surprised to receive her invitation, but never let it be said that she wasn't up for a party. She had hunted down a period-appropriate dress, tried and failed to get her braids to conform to a period-appropriate style and still managed to arrive at WWW early enough that she had to browse for ten minutes before being allowed through to the 'floo'.

She had set aside her wrapped gift on an appropriate table, hoping that Dean actually drank alcohol, and admired the set up of the room. After helping herself to some punch she'd set herself up at a table to await other guests.

"I know, right?" she said, perking up as she was approached. "I like your outfit," she said. "Very cute." He smile was wide, and she gestured to the table, inviting the other woman to sit.

Katie was glad and a bit surprised to see the invitation for Deans birthday; mainly because of her unfortunate comment to him and Seamus. But bygones were bygones and all moved forward.

Katie had placed a dust-resistant charm on her dress before flooing to what she could only think of as a speakeasy. It very very well decorated.

Dusting herself off, she looked around the room and found the table of presents and placed her gift(more paint for portraits and the like as well as a book of spells to enchant them, similar to the paintings at Hogwarts.) with them before spotting Angelina and a lady she was unfamiliar with. She carefully made her way to where her friend sat. "Hello hello," she said greeting both women.

Lucy smiled back, glad to be greeted with friendliness. She hadn't really expected anything different from people who were presumably friends of Dean (and possibly also of Susan) but she still felt a little bit like she was finding her feet in the wizarding world so it was nice to have the reassurance. "Thanks!" she said. "You look gorgeous." Though she didn't usually wear dresses, Lucy had considered it - the flapper style might actually look decent on her fairly straight-up-and-down frame. In the end, though, she hadn't been able to resist the cute braces, bowtie and hat.

As she sat down, another voice hailed them and Lucy turned, smiling. "Hi," she responded. "Would you like some punch?" There was a bowl on the table, and a few upside down glasses. "I haven't tasted it yet, but it's incredibly pretty."

"Katie!" Angelina exclaimed, jumping up and giving her a quick hug.

"Thank you," she said to the other woman, "It's kind of fun," she said, doing a little shimmy which made the trailing tassels and sequins clatter together like rainfall. "I'm glad I found something colourful. All the grey and black and stuff is gorgeous," she winked at Katie, "but I prefer colour when I can get it," she said.

She sat back down and sipped her punch. "Good news is it's both pretty and tasty," she said, raising her glass, which clearly displayed that Angie had had a few sips already.

"Ahem, anyway, I'm Angelina and this is Katie, former housemates of the birthday boy," she said.

Katie returned Angelina's hug and waved to the new one. "Nice to meet you; both of you look lovely." Katie was very glad to see such diverse costumes so far.

"I'll pass on the punch," she said with a smirk. Who knew what exactly was in the punch. She had no intention on getting drunk tonight. Katie didn't intend on staying very long.

"Oh yes, we knew Dean when he was just a young lad."

Lucy watched as the two women greeted each other enthusiastically, wondering for just a moment if she ought to go and seek out other company. Fortunately, Angelina and Katie both seemed perfectly willing to include her in their conversation, so she held her ground. "Angelina, Katie," she murmured, with a nod to each as she tried to seal their names in her mind. "Got it. Hopefully I won't mix you up, but just in case I'll get my excuses about the punch in now." She sipped the drink, smiling, testing the taste. She couldn't quite place the flavour, and she wondered if it was magic that made the drink so vivid.

"I'm Lucy," she offered. "And I met Dean a few weeks ago. I'm living with Susan, if that means anything to you."

"Well, I'm not sure about Katie, but I've been called infinitely worse than wrong name, so I'm sure I'll cope," she said and raised her own punch glass in acknowledgement.

She gave a rather blank look at Lucy's explanation of where she lived. "Nope, doesn't mean anything to me, but then again I've only been back in the country, what three months or so, I'm not totally caught up with everyone yet." She shrugged easily. "Honestly I'm not sure I've Dean much since I got back. I think he was working at the pub, which I'm sort of guessing is where we are, one time when I went in."

She looked around, impressed by the decorations. The lack of visible door was a bit disconcerting, but she assumed there would be an easy way to get out again once people were ready to go.

Katie nodded in agreement, "I've heard worse than the wrong name on the Quidditch pitch... and I don't even play anymore," she laughed.

"I'm even newer, I've been here a little under a month. What's her surname though? I don't think there was a Susan in Gryffindor when we were there, but I can't say much for other houses," Katie was not one to brush off people, so she intended to get the most facts before saying one thing or another.

"Really?" Lucy asked, mildly puzzled. "To hear Susan tell it, she's Dean's best friend. I know they weren't in the same house, but I figured the people here would know her." She shrugged, because it didn't really matter. "Susan Bones," she clarified in answer to Katie's question. "She was in Hufflepuff - with me. Same year, though."

She sipped her drink again, deciding that even if she couldn't work out what it was, she didn't really care. "You played Quidditch?" she asked. She'd been trying to get into the sport since it seemed so popular, but she didn't really know where to begin.

"Ah, see I'm two years ahead of Dean, school wise, we were never that close. He was a good Quidditch player though, which is how I know him mostly. That and the banner painting he used to do," she said. "We," she said, gesturing between herself and Katie, "were mostly juggling schoolwork and the demands of Oliver Wood," she joked.

"Yup, we played, which was where Wood came in. I still do, which is why I've been away for a few years. I was playing in New Zealand, I just joined the Appleby Arrows though so I'm back." It seemed like maybe Lucy wasn't a fan though, so she was quick to reassure her. "I promise we can talk about other things though!"

Katie couldn't help but turn a little red when Oliver's name was brought up. She tried to focus on the subject on hand. "I was a year ahead of Dean, played Quidditch only at school," she was not about to add unfortunate wording such as 'under Wood'. "While I haven't played professionally, I'm been a medi-wizard for a team down in Australia since... the latter part of 1998? Maybe 1999. I just moved back at the beginning of the month and just got on with the Falmouth Falcons." Angelina was right, they did talk about other things. "Dean is a great artist. He always had something for Quidditch championships."

Lucy nodded as she absorbed all this new information. "I didn't know he played Quidditch. I didn't really get to go watch matches when I was at school." She was interested to know more, but also interested in the travelling. "Oh, I'm jealous," she said, grinning. "I've never really been able to travel much." Now that she was working for Rich that seemed likely to change, which she was still wrapping her head around.

"I don't mind talking about Quidditch," she said, "though you probably wouldn't enjoy talking to me about it. I know nothing at all about how it works, except that it's sort of like football only more complicated." She shrugged. "I want to get into it. I like sports in general, watching and playing. Do you think I should just turn up to a match? Or will I be hopelessly confused?"

Angelina's eyes widened when she spotted Katie's cheeks go red at the mere mention of Oliver. She bit her lips and resisted the urge to rise to that particular bait. She tried to catch her eye and indicate without words that they would be having words about that particular reaction later. She hadn't reacted like that since school when the two of them had been snogging secretly in corners.

"Ah, I think it could go either way," she admitted. If Lucy was a sports fan she'd likely have a better chance than a non-fan, but it might not help all that much. "There are four balls, fourteen people on brooms plus an umpire, six hoops and two of the balls are trying to hit people. Yeah, I'm not making it sound easy." She looked appealingly at Katie and took another sip of her punch. "I mean the basic try and get appropriate ball through opposing team's hoops still stands, but after that it gets a bit more complicated," she admitted.

Katie made eye contact with Angelina before quickly looking away. She got the message and knew Angelina wasn't going to let this drop. But Katie was grateful for her tact.

Katie tried to compare it to football. "Well, like Angie said, there's four balls involved. Two do try to attack you, but players just avoid them for the most part. The smallest ball, called the snitch, only two players, one from either team called Seekers, pay any attention to. Instead of 11 players per team there are 7, although we have reserve players. Like football there is a main ball involved, that's called the quaffle, that's how most points are scored. Goalkeepers are called simply Keepers and they protect three large hoops instead of one large box. We use our hands to control the quaffle because we're flying high in the air. There's defensive and offensive plays. Of the seven players, one I mentioned goes after the snitch, one protects the goals, two players jobs are protecting the others from the balls that try to attack you, the players are called beaters and the balls are bludgers. The three remaining players are called Chasers, they are like the forwards, because they chase the quaffle and score points for their team. Like football, there's intercepting of the quaffle and passing the quaffle back and forth, and of course there's horribly nasty maneuvers which are illegal and result in penalty throws." Katie paused a moment, hoping she hadn't confused Lucy very much, but football was an interest of hers. "Anytime you want to catch a match, let me know. Unless the Falcons are playing, I should be available."

Katie took a moment to look at Angelina, trying not to turn pink; Merlin knows what she was thinking, "Did all that babble sound accurate?"

Lucy sat forward, interested in both their explanations. "It definitely sounds exciting," she said, trying to picture everything Katie and Angelina described, but almost certain she was getting it all wrong and missing parts of it too. "Confusing, but exciting. I think what I'd like to do is take someone with me who understands it and then go watch a game. Or maybe watch an amateur game first, if they do that anywhere but at Hogwarts..." It suddenly occured to her that Bryn might take her. She couldn't remember off hand which team he supported, but they hadn't done very well. Still, since he supported them he'd probably like to go, and she assumed he wouldn't make taking her with him.

Katie broke into her thoughts and offered herself as a companion - causing Lucy to blush in turn. "Oh, that'd be great," she said, smiling.

"Confusing but exciting is a good description at least until you're used to it," she said, nodding. Having grown up with Quidditch it was all pretty normal to her, but she remembered her muggleborn year-mates and how they had reacted to the game.

Then Lucy was blushing too. Best not to investigate that one either. New people weren't used to her enthusiastic investigation. And it could be maybe seen as a bit nosy. And really it was usually reserved for her close friends. "Oh, she'll be a great chaperone," Angie enthused. "Knows what's going on, and the rules and stuff. Sadly I usually only get time to listen to matches if I'm not playing in them." She was hoping she could get to a place where she could go to a match once in a while too, but mostly listening and reading the post-match summaries from the team was enough since she usually had either a match to get over or match to prepare for when other games were on.

"So, what is it you do?" she asked. "Since we've regaled you about our world. Even if she doesn't play any more." She hooked a thumb at Katie and grinned.

"Yes, what is it you do? Its nice to know people outside sports, that's for sure." Katie agreed, avoiding her friends eye. It was nice that someone else was a blusher.

"So what are the rosy cheeks for?" She asked with a mischievous grin. It always happened to her and what better way to make friends. Or something like that.

Dean and Open

After Susan had guided him to his party and he'd exchanged slightly awkward greetings and thanks for the excellent decorations with Seamus, Dean had grabbed himself a glass of punch and wandered around several tables aimlessly trying to decide where to sit. He'd said hello to a few more people on the way and eventually ended up on one of the comfier looking chairs. He was the birthday boy, he decided he deserved comfort.

He all but flopped down into one and fiddled with his bow tie. Susan had insisted he wear it, and he had to admit the whole thing made a nice match to his birthday gift hat, but it didn't mean it was especially comfortable.

He had a feeling someone was going to say the birthday boy shouldn't be miserable, but even though he felt better than he had at one point, frankly he didn't care. He had the punch, which was pretty tasty, and he sort of wanted to see how many of the cocktails he could make it through. Maybe he should get someone to supply him with hangover potion. He had a feeling he'd need it.

As someone approached he looked up from his contemplation of his glass and managed a slightly weak smile.

This definitely wasn't Hermione's scene but she had taken the time to dress the part for the evening. She simply couldn't understand the draw of alcohol. It dulled the senses and created situations she simply did not want to imagine. Still it was Dean's birthday, she'd been invited and it would be rude not to make an appearance.

She'd placed her gift on the table before looking around the room. It was then that she saw Dean seated in a chair that looked fairly comfortable with an empty one nearby. "This seat taken?" she smiled and stood before the chair awaiting an answer.

"Hey, Hermione," he said, gesturing to the chair. "No, totally free. Go right ahead." Merlin he could already feel that his arms were kind of slower and limper. It seemed unlikely it was visible from the outside, but it felt weird in his body.

"You look nice," he said, leaning back in the chair at something of a slump, head tilting to one side. "I like the theme, even if my bow tie is stupid," he said, slightly petulant as he poked it again.

"How's you?" he asked, deciding that too much formality was overrated, even with Hermione.

Hermione settled into the seat. She always felt a bit out of place when drinking was a focal point of one of the groups gatherings. A part of her really missed the days when they were in school and time together were more about being with each other than escaping the world around them.

"Thank you," she sat up a little taller in the chair so as to show the fullness of the outfit. She couldn't help but smirk at his obvious distaste of the bow tie. "It's not that bad. It could be a foot wide and polka dotted." She had seen ties like that on clowns and thought they looked absolutely ridiculous.

When he asked how she was Hermione went silent for a bit. That was a loaded question these days and she wasn't sure what all was going on in her life. "Handling the new job," she finally chose to say. When all else failed she could always focus on the office.

"It could. And I am very pleased that it isn't," Dean agreed with the sort of emphatic tone and gestures that probably gave away rather more of his state of intoxication. "Just a bit restrictive," he muttered, and resisted the urge to undo it only because he'd told Susan he'd keep it done for a while at least.

Dean, who had slouched down into his chair, turned his head to Hermione, flat along the back of the chair, and frowned. "You have a new job?" he asked. "I think I missed that." He certainly didn't remember reading it, and he hadn't seen her for ages. "What are you up to now?" he asked. She looked uncomfortable somehow, but he was feeling to fuzzy around the edges to really try and work out why. It would have involved a lot of squinting and that only ever looked suspicious or stupid. Sss. S was a fun sound in his head. He blinked and shook his head slightly. Hermione. Focus on Hermione.

Hermione took her wand out and with a concentrated whisper loosened the bow tie while allowing it to keep the appearance of sitting properly in place. "Better?" she asked tucking her wand back into it's spot.

"I've taken a position with the Ministry working on policy around House Elves." It had been something that's been on her mind for several years. Actually, it was the goal she'd held onto the longest. She had hoped to make a real change once she'd seen how Dobby had been treated and after his death she had vowed his sacrifices would not be in vain. All elves deserved respect for the jobs they did which were often rather menial and definitely the sort of things Wizards would rather not do or preferred to refrain from using their time on.

Sticking a finger under his collar and fiddling he smiled brightly at Hermione. "Great, thanks Hermione. I'll probably still take it off eventually. This is good for now though," he said.

Dean took another healthy sip of his punch as she spoke and he nodded. "Sounds right up your Alley," he said. "How's it going? I imagine busy. You're always busy," he said sounding slightly accusatory. He probably shouldn't have said that. It was true but it didn't sound polite and he frowned. "Sorry." Merlin was his crappy mood affecting him more than he thought.

Seamus and Ron

Seamus didn't know whether to bless Susan or hex her. The white shirt she'd insisted he wear was more tightly tailored to his body than anything Seamus would have chosen for himself, making him feel uncomfortably on show. On the other hand, the blue braces meant there was no chance of the shirt slipping up or the trousers slipping down. Worried about the possible transparency of thin white fabric, Seamus was wearing a white t-shirt underneath. Perhaps that was why he'd abandoned the blazer and bowtie so quickly. He'd felt too warm, and a little like he was being suffocated.

Between apparating the portkey back to WWW, helping George and Ron man the floo fire and mixing drinks for new arrivals, Seamus had still managed to throw back two bastard prohibition cocktails. He needed to use up the poitín from Ginny's birthday, and it seemed appropriate to drink moonshine at a prohibition party, but he didn't think any of the other guests would much appreciate the strong, earthy smell of the drink. He wasn't quite drunk - not even as far on the way as Dean had seemed to be when he arrived - but he was aware of his own voice increasing in volume - a sure sign that 'drunk' was his final destination. "Ron!" he called, spotting Ron winking into existence in the designated 'arrival' area. He moved towards him, clapping a hand to his back. "Come and have a drink."

"You read my mind," Ron agreed readily, finally able to join the party. He hadn't minded acting as a sort of doorman, but it was nice to get to the action after watching other guests arrive in their finery. Ron had found his own suit in the attic at the Burrow, though it had involved disturbing the family ghoul and asking his mother to make a few alterations because his great uncle hadn't been quite as tall and Ron didn't much fancy going about with his ankles and wrists out on show. As it happened, the cut of it suited him, emphasising his leanness in a way that his WWW robes really, really didn't.

"Well, it's an easy mind to read," Seamus said, voice just a little louder than it really needed to be. "Not much going on in it." He grinned, noticing in an absent sort of way that the suit suited Ron, and let his hand drop from Ron's shoulder.

He led the way back to the bar, where he was keeping most of the spirits and mixers. "Pick your poison - or poisons," he said, with a sweeping gesture at the bottles. "Birthday boy likes spiced rum, I'm drinking Irish moonshine and we're all out of Firewhisky because some daft bugger forgot to order more." By which Seamus very definitely meant himself.

Seamus reached for a glass and poured a measure of poitín into the bottom of it before pausing. It was a strong tasting spirit, and a lot of his prohibition research had been about cocktails made to cover the taste of poorly distilled bootleg booze so he knew he could cover it... but he didn't know if Ron was really the sweet-sugary cocktail type. On the other hand, it was a 1920s party, and classy little cocktails were kind of expected.

In the end, Seamus grabbed vodka and ginger beer. It was a drink Dean would probably like, which seemed appropriate in its own way. "Of course he does," Seamus answered brightly, fingers slipping slightly on the glass as he missed his mark trying to add a lime wedge to the rim. "It's his birthday. Reflexively, Ron reached out as Seamus' fingers slipped, but he managed to stop himself when he saw that the glass wasn't going to fall and smash.

"It is indeed. I'll have to find him and give him his present later." He frowned suddenly. "Except I think I might have left it at the shop just now." He shrugged, giving up on the idea of the present for now. "Never mind." Dean would get his present when he got it. "D'you know what, I think it was one of my better ideas. It's nice to just play."

Seamus nodded automatically as he handed Ron his drink. "Come on," he encouraged him. "You need to catch up with me or you'll be no fun at all." His accent, never absent, was more marked even than usual - as if he'd come straight here from Greencastle. Once he was finished with Ron's drink, he made another just like it for himself. He didn't need to cover the taste of the liquor as much as Ron did, but he wouldn't mind the extra hit of alcohol from the vodka.

"That's good," he said. "I'm sorry I can't get to it much, it's a busy day for me already what with one thing and another." He'd been to one or two, but he knew Ron could run it on his own so it wasn't a priority. "Any promising new players?"

Ron took a large swallow, which was a bit of a mistake, but he tried not to let it show. That was probably going to go straight to his head, he thought, but he was fine with that. It was a party, after all.

He waved Seamus's apology off. "I remember you saying when I started it that you might not get around to coming much. Even if you aren't busy, you deserve a day off." Trying a smaller sip of his drink, Ron nodded. "Yeah. Had a couple of teenagers over the summer, but they've gone back to school now. They were good. D'you know what, it's nice to just play and not spend the whole time watching."

Lateish: Dominic and Open

When it got to eight o’clock, Dominic decided he was bored of apparating to and from WWW with the portkey. He should have set up several, as he'd been planning to do until Seamus reminded him that unauthorised portkeys were illegal. Instead, he made one last trip to George's shop and placed a charmed parchment on the door. It read 'Party guest? What's the password?' and, when given the appropriate word, would change to say 'Apparate to The Roost'. It wasn't quite as mysterious as Seamus's original plan, but most people who were going to attend were already at the party, so Dominic didn't feel bad about his decision.

On apparating back to the Roost, he interrupted Seamus to ask for a sidecar - his first drink of the evening. He'd been refraining until now, not wanting to splinch himself. Drink safely in hand, he moved over to the wall of pictures, most of which he'd taken himself but some of which were reproductions of genuine 1920s work. "What do you think?" he asked.

Dennis had got to the party late - having spent a rather upsetting amount of his day taking portkeys across Central Asia and Europe to get back home, then enduring an afternoon with his nagging mother and aunt - something made slightly comical by the outfit he was wearing in preparation for the party. Still, he'd arrived, wished Dean a happy birthday and given him a present, hugged Seamus, and gotten himself a drink.

He was taking a moment to admire the 1920s themed photographs on the walls when he saw Dominic. "They look amazing actually," he replied, smiling brightly. "Did you take many of them yourself? You have a great eye if you did."

Dominic smiled as Dennis turned and revealed a little more of his outfit. He was enjoying all the 1920s costumes, and was glad he'd brought his camera along, he thought he'd get some good shots out of tonight. "Thank you," he said. "A few of them are mine." He pointed at a few, mostly of interesting-looking houses or fixtures in muggle London, developed in black-and-white but still with the magical movement. They weren't especially 1920s subjects, but he hadn't thought many people would look closely enough to notice that.

"Nice costume," he said, eyeing Dennis approvingly. "I see we both went with the waistcoat option.

"You're welcome," Dennis replied, still smiling brightly. He looked more closely at the photographs that Dominic pointed out, and found them to be quite good. "I love the juxtaposition between the mundane nature of the shots and the fact that you still developed them to move."

He laughed slightly and lifted his arms and spun around for Dominic to see. "I thought it seemed appropriate. You're looking extremely dapper yourself."

With a slight snort of laughter, Dominic nodded. "Well, I'm glad you like it. I spent entirely too long going back and forth over the decision. I wanted to avoid people, because modern clothes would ruin the effect, but without them... I wasn't sure how much movement there was to capture. Thank god it was a windy day, because I didn't want to spend hours looking for birds or squirrels or what have you." The movement in most of the photographs was subtle, leaves silently rustling, curtains twitching.

Turning a little circle to show off his outfit, Dominic smiled. "Thanks. Have you tried a cocktail yet?"
