Though she had no right to act as hostess, Bryony couldn't help stepping into that role a little. If, by doing so, she could reduce the burden on Marcus then it would be worth a little whispered disapproval. After all, at this point what did she have to lose? She didn't know how many of the guests might already know about her exile from her family - and she hoped none of them would mention it to Marcus. But even if it wasn't public knowledge yet, it soon would be, and who then would care that she'd seemed to think too much of herself at the funeral?
"Mr Summerby," she greeted him - struggling to remember his Christian name and glad she had good reason not to use it. "Are you well?" Bryony's feelings about Philipa were so complicated that she'd rather not talk about her, if at all possible.
