BRUSSELS BRACES FOR A BEATING
By Finn Collins
Tensions in the Belgian capital have continued to worsen today, after the FPS Magical Affairs, Witchcraft and Wizardry (Dutch: FOD Magische Zaken, Tovenaars en Heksen, French: SPF: Affaires magiques, la sorcellerie et la magie) declared martial law in the magical community in an attempt to quell tensions between Flems and Walloons in the beleaguered capital..
The tensions began earlier this week when a dragon escaped from a reserve in the High Fens and killed several families in a remote wizarding village. Nationalist and extremist factions amongst the French-speaking Walloons and Dutch-speaking Flems seized upon the disaster and began blaming members of the one another’s community for lack of vigilance in maintaining the wards of the reserve.
Things came to a head on Wednesday when members of both communities held simultaneous illegal demonstrations in Brussels demanding that the government take action. Matters were made more complicated on Thursday when pro-peace and pro-unity groups clashed with the nationalist protesters outside the FPS offices in Godsmiths, the historic magical residential and shopping district nestled in Belgian capital.
The decision to instigate martial law came when all three groups refused to adhere to orders from the Directorate-General of Justice and Order to disperse. More than sixty people were arrested by law enforcement and aurory officials before the groups finally backed down and dispersed.
However, a further ninety people were arrested during the night and into the morning for a slew of offences including: breaking curfew, illegal duelling, looting, rioting, and breaching the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy by performing magic in front of Muggles.
When contacted for a quote, the office of the Minister of Magical Affairs stated simply that "the situation in Belgium is a matter of internal security and not the concern of nosey foreign journalists."
Unofficially, sources within the Belgian ministry are concerned that the tensions between the groups - which, though never completely cordial - seem wildly out of place within the context of the events that have transpired.
There are further concerns that the agitation bears marked similarities to tensions that were orchestrated by the generals of Gellert Grindelwald prior to his bloody rise to power in the 1930s and 40s.
While there is no confirmable evidence to support this belief, sources within the Department of Magical Law Enforcement have confirmed that there has been a marked increase in attacks perpetrated by dark wizards of late, though the source also stressed that the groups did not appear to be linked...
