Delivery: Howler to Rolf Scamander

SCAMANDER!

THERE ARE TWO CATS IN MY OFFICE, AND THE ONLY PERSON WHO COULD HAVE BROUGHT THEM HERE IS YOU.

EXPLAIN YOURSELF.

All Rolf could do at receiving the Howler was chuckle. Well, he'd sort of hoped to provoke Millicent Bulstrode out of her isolation. She hadn't come into the shop herself in at least a couple of months, and correspondence had been much sparser than usual.

Besides, she had offered to foster more cats. A few months ago. But that didn't really matter.

He wrote back a neat little note and sent one of the other owls off with it, since hers had wisely not stuck around.

Oh Miss Bulstrode,

Do relax. You did say you would foster more cats for me if needed. So I brought them on by. You weren't around, so I left them there with everything they needed for you. I'll keep trying to find them a home, but in the meantime, they really could use some good cuddling.

Hope to see you in for your order next week.

Rolf Scamander

Part of him knew it would probably only rile her further, but he couldn't help it, really.

Of course he wouldn't apologise. Millicent tossed Rolf's reply down onto the packet of contracts she'd just been about to file, and rubbed at her forehead. Underhandedness like that had been wasted in Hufflepuff, she thought balefully, and looked under her desk as one of the cats curled inside the little bed at her feet flung a paw out with a very large yawn.

Foster more cats, indeed. Yes, she'd be happy to do so, but this...this was not a short-term arrangement. This was a devious, cunning way to get her to take a bonded pair he knew she'd almost, fleetingly considered taking, before her common sense had taken control.

She already had three cats! And two owls! And the canary was going to be very grumpy when these two showed up; he was already outnumbered. Millicent grumbled into her palm as she swiped at her face one more time, then picked up another piece of paper and began to write.

MR SCAMANDER,

WERE THIS THE FOSTERING ARRANGEMENT UPON WHICH WE HAD AGREED, I WOULD BE HAPPY TO PROVIDE YOU WITH THE SERVICES OF SUCH. HOWEVER. NON-REGULATED ANIMALS...

Millicent stopped, thought for a moment, then shook her head.

NON-REGULATED ANIMALS IT IS HIGHLY IMPROPER TO BRING THEM INTO MY PLACE OF BUSINESS. AND YOUR MOTIVATIONS IN BRINGING ME MEEP AND NEEP ARE BLATANTLY TRANSPARENT.

The shop-owl had begun scuttling sideways towards the window as the Howler began to wobble a bit, eyeing it warily, so Millicent took the jar of the really good treats out of her desk, and rattled it temptingly. The moment the owl got back within reach, Millicent pounced, stuffing the note into its beak with a triumphant huff, and then gave it the treat in its left foot before it could protest. As she watched it waddle to the window, jump out, and fly away with a bit of a grumble, she grumbled a little herself, pushing out of her chair to get on with the filing she'd been about to do.

Rolf's lips twitched. He sincerely doubted that almost anyone realized his grandmother had been a Slytherin, anymore at least. After all, she was so very old now; it was beyond many's reckoning. But the woman had raised him probably more than his own mother, and despite her many faults, she had tried with him. And these days she was much mellower, in as far as one could ever call Porpentina Scamander mellow.

Dear Miss Bulstrode,

Perhaps it was slightly improper, but there was no way I was going to leave them on your doorstep, inside-larger and temperature controlled carrier or not. Besides, every work place could do with a mascot or two; Meep and Neep seemed quite at home (and several of your coworkers seem to approve).

However, motivations are such slippery things. Are you quite sure you have me pegged? This little Hufflepuff simply wants his furry friends to be in a loving situation.

Sincerely,

Rolf Scamander

And okay, perhaps he was having a bit of fun winding her up a bit; it was just so easy today. And he hadn't seen his sisters in weeks, with them being on vacation.
