Katie had been home for a week and was getting accustomed once more. It was wonderful. You can go home again if you don't expect it to be the same. While she never would trade the years in Australia, she knew where she belonged.

Right now, she belonged at the pub. She wasn't drinking, just more-or-less hoping to see old friends. She had run into quite a few over the course of the past week and was wondering who would stop in to the pub tonight. Perhaps she should have sent a message or two out. Oh well. She'd let fate handle things.

After the concussion Oliver had spent a few days in the hospital, followed by mandatory 'rest', which meant staying at his parent's place while his mom fussed and his dad reassured him that his Quidditch career wasn't over. Oliver's anxiety had been through the roof lately and he just needed a night away from his parents.

So where would a person like Oliver go when he needs to get away from it all? The pub, of course! A drink to unwind wouldn't hurt. Assuring his mother he would be just fine and not overdo it, Oliver apparated to the designated spot outside his favorite watering hole and wandered inside. He loved coming here; at Finnigan's Oliver could just be a regular person, not the Quidditch superstar everyone else knew him as.

Katie wasn't anticipating seeing anyone in particular, perhaps old mates from Hogwarts. She loved catching up in person with people from another era of her life. She couldn't believe how many had children!

She was heading back to her table from the bar, butterbeer in hand. She might not be drinking anything heavy, but how could you turn down an old classic? Katie was a bit oblivious as she bumped into someone, grateful for the lid on her bottle. It wasn't very crowded in the room, and she still managed to hit someone. "I'm sorry..."she began before realizing which poor soul crossed her path, Oliver. "Bloody hell!"

"Oliver!" Someone called out, grabbing the blond's attention. He didn't mind, there was always someone to talk to at Seamus' bar. He didn't recognize the face but the person excited struck up a conversation about Quidditch. He nodded politely, listening to the bloke's predictions when someone collided with him.

With the reflexes honed from years of Quidditch, Oliver's arm shot out to stabilize the person who bumped into him. "You alright?" He asked automatically before realizing who he was talking to. "Katie?" His face broke into a large smile. "Bloody hell!" They'd both said in unison as Oliver scooped up his former teammate into a firm hug. "Kates! Look at you!" He marveled, setting her back down. "You look wonderful!"

Katie quickly got over her shock and hugged Oliver back, before being let go and righting herself. "Thanks. You look great too. How's life? Still playing Quidditch?" She knew the answer to the last question but still asked; she then realized she had interrupted a conversation. "My apologies. I didn't mean to..." she trailed off, gesturing towards the other bloke.

Katie wasn't sure what to do, especially after asking questions, so she simply grinned before opening her butterbeer. The table could wait. One of her dearest friends was here!

"Ah, yeah, I'm still catching Quaffles. Nothing really new for me. What about you?" Katie's gesture, Oliver looked to the man he'd been talking to. "Talk to you later, mate." He flashed that practiced, polite smile often seen when ending an interview or dismissing an annoying fan. "Let's get a table. I just got in."

"I've got a table over here," Katie said, walking towards her original spot. "I'm doing well, I was the mediwitch for Thundelarra, but I heard of openings for one closer to home. I meet with the Bangers tomorrow afternoon and the Tornadoes on Monday." Katie said with a big grin. She never stopped loving the game. "Do you want a drink?"

Following Katie to her table, Oliver pulled out Katie's seat and waited for her to sit before seating himself. "I heard you were with Thunderlarra! Alicia said something about it. She's a mediwitch too now, you know?" Oliver leaned forward on his elbows, visibly buzzing with excitement. He couldn't think of a better way to get his mind off the anxiety of a new season than discussing happier times.

Oliver paused for a moment, considering. He desperately wanted a beer; he also knew since the concussion his moods had been unpredictable. "Erm, I'll pass. New season is starting and I have to stay on a strict diet." Oliver lied coolly. His blue eyes swept over Katie, observing her fondly. "I'm very happy you've come back home, Kates."

Katie nodded, "Alicia is one of few people I've corresponded with constantly. I'm actually staying with her temporarily. Mum and Dad wanted me home but I couldn't do it. I'm too used to just doing my own thing, you know?" She felt like she was rambling, but she felt so excited. "Strict diet? One of the perks about my job; I get all the thrill without the rules." That didn't sound right, but then again, she wasn't a player so she ignored it. "You have no idea how great it is to be home. I missed everything about here, for the most." Despite her giddiness, Katie felt an underlying shyness creep in. Perhaps it was just catching up with an old friend and all that she had been through; she did think herself boring at times. "Tell me about you, Oliver."

"Yeah, she mentioned you two owled from time to time." Oliver pouted exaggeratedly, though he felt a subtle pang of envy. While at school he'd maintained distance with his teammates, despite the fact they were the the closest thing he had to friends. Naturally the members of Gryffindor Quidditch Team had went their separate ways, especially with the dividing factors of graduation and a war. Deep down, it bothered Oliver that he kept his closest friends at arm's length.

"Yeah, strict diet." The manic gleam of Quidditch twinkled in his eyes. "I've been doing research for years and certain foods will optimize my body and mind to make sure I am at the peak of my operating output for games. Some foods will affect you for several days, so you have to be extra careful!" It wasn't a lie, though he often used this excuse to avoid drinking. "Since you're a mediwitch I'm surprised you didn't have to draw up nutrition plans for your players. Our Mediteam is can be a bit like clucking hens." Though Oliver would put the limits on himself had the staff not told him to do so.

The Quidditch mania faded from his face and Oliver beamed at Katie. "I'm happy you're home too, Kates, I really am. Staying with Alicia I'll probably see you quite often." A shrug of his shoulders followed Katie's question. "Me? Merlin, I don't know..." Where could he even start? Thinking of everything that had happened since he'd last seemed Katie felt like an unsurmountable task. His popularity skyrocketing, the sponsorships, the interviews, the media, Melinda, the alcoholic tendencies he was keeping very hidden, his anxiety, the nightmares, trying to keep himself together in general.

"Well, I still play Quidditch, and I live in Muggle London. Honestly, everything else you want to know has been printed up in the papers." Oliver smiled that practiced smile.

Katie wished she had kept up more with Oliver since he had left school and then once she left. She hadn't read the papers much; especially the Prophet. While she kept up with local papers, the Prophet seemed the furthest from her mind. Of course, if it was a major story, it'd be in her paper, but seldom was anyone from home mentioned, let alone Oliver.

"Oh, right," Katie said with a nod. Maybe she could go and find an archive with them. "Well, we didn't have them on diets, just a few foods to avoid and which ones would be best right before a game. Everything else they did was on them."

Katie got distracted for a moment, lost in memories from years passed. "What was your favorite memory from Hogwarts?" There were times when she felt like she didn't know her friends, and seeing as how she and Oliver had lost touch over the years, Katie wanted to try to start somewhere.

A pang of guilt shot through Oliver; he hadn't meant to give Katie a brush-off response, but he truly didn't really know what to say to catch her up. So much had happened and changed even though he felt the same.

"Well, I live in Clapham. A cozy little flat with a nice view of a garden. It even has a guest room! You could crash if you get tired of Alicia's place." Despite having dated Katie, Oliver felt no awkwardness to their past connection. They'd left on, what he assumed, was good terms. "Somehow I have yet to make it to the National Team but I really want to, but I'm still with Puddlemere." Oliver's chest puffed with pride; he loved his team and felt fierce loyalty to them. "I'm also looking into getting a pet; something to liven up my otherwise boring life." He was careful to leave out the mess with Melinda, or the fact he was currently crashing with his parents because they were worried about his anxiety. Katie didn't need to know all that.

Oliver's eyes swept over Katie when she fell into silence and marveled at the differences from the girl he'd dated at school. She was much more tan, and despite always being athletic she looked much more womanly. Her hair was still the same deep brown and her nose still crinkled in the same place when she smiled.

"My favorite memory?" The change of note in Katie's voice grabbed his attention. "Hmm, well, I'm not sure." He raised a hand, resting his chin on the palm. "Quidditch, I suppose? Being with my mates, you know, the team and all. Winning the cup. Just... being. I know the war is over but things were really easy back then. You?"

"That offer sounds nice. It might give Alicia a break too," Katie said with a laugh. "I'm sure you'll make National soon, you're an excellent player." She tried to keep up with friends who played professionally, but lost track a bit. If Oliver was better than his school days, she knew he could definitely make the national team.

She appeared deep in thought, "it was so much easier as kids. I miss running around with Alicia and Angelina. I hated being a year behind despite being their age. You should get a cat," she added, remembering his comment. "They aren't too needy but friendly. And useful."

Katie had noticed Oliver's physical changes when he hugged her; definitely more toned than he once was. It suited him though, he wasn't over-the-top like some men tried to be. Katie felt like something was off with him, but dared not ask, it'd be impolite. Despite the physical changes, it seemed like he was still her old friend from at school.

"Definitely! It has a garden!" Clearly Oliver was very excited about his new residence. Despite his money and popularity his former flat hadn't been the type of place you'd expect a rising Quidditch star to live in; more like someone who swept the floors at the Leaky. If it hadn't been for the intervention with his mum, sister and Alicia he probably would still be living there with milk-crates for furniture; Oliver had never been one to care for flashy, material goods, though he couldn't deny his new place was definitely an upgrade.

Placing his free hand over Katie's, he gave it a small squeeze. "Hey now, we never thought of you as any different because of your age. Besides, you and Alicia were practically inseparable if remember." How could he not? Between Alicia's hot-headed nature and Katie's incredible stubbornness it often seemed like they were a stone wall, especially when arguing over something thick Oliver had done. "You were honestly one of the best fliers; my whole team were incredible. You could have went pro, and I know you make a fine healer." He ran his thumb over the top of her fingers before releasing her hand and smiling fondly. "If I get a cat, I'm going to blame you for whatever it knocks off the shelf."

"Gardens are lovely, do you have a gardener that maintains it or are you trying your hand?" Katie was a bit taken aback by him grabbing her hand. She tried to hide her surprise.

"I never would have made it pro... I couldn't handle the diet," leave it to her to try and laugh her way out of surprise. Although she did somewhat pout when he let go; she missed that feeling.

"That's why you get multiples. To keep then entertained."

"Well, not much is growing there, honestly. I had a lad to mow the grass but beyond that it is rather sparse." Oliver couldn't keep a cactus alive if his life depended on it (and he knew this because he'd accidentally killed a cactus but not watering it enough).

Maybe grabbing her hand wasn't the best idea; Oliver often acted first and thought later. He'd missed the surprise on her face, though mistook the subtle pout for him having touched her. Mentally, Oliver kicked himself, thinking it was okay to just touch essentially a stranger. They had their past, but that didn't mean it was relevant in the present. Quickly busying his hands with the hem of his shirt, Oliver offered an apologetic smile before continuing on, hoping to put the uncomfortable feeling behind him. "I also want a dog, you know? Something I can go running with and that will keep me active."

Katie felt like kicking herself now. "Dogs are great. I couldn't bear leaving one behind with all the traveling I hope to do with a team. Cats are self sufficient."

Katie looked around the pub, before looking back to him, "when does season start?" She knew; just wanted to move past her error.

"I haven't much experience with a cat beyond Hermione's... thing." Oliver still wasn't exactly convinced it was a cat, or a kneezle, but it was fluffy and good for petting so he put his suspicions aside.

Scooting back ever so slightly, Oliver leaned back in his chair and tilted the front legs a few inches off the ground. "Couple of weeks. I'm excited. Summer is nice to have the extra free time to swim and loaf about," despite his idea of 'loafing' being as active as possible, "but I'm ready for the season. Puddlemere was middle of the pack last season." The corners of his lips twitched ever so slightly as they often did when hiding his disappointment. "I've been collaborating with the coach and captain all summer. We're going to be ready, Kates."

"Crookshanks was adorable. He was a good... cat." Katie chose her words carefully. "You and I know you'll do well. It's the young ones who think they're great but need more practice. The ones scooped up right out of Hogwarts..." Katie teased. She couldn't have been prouder when Oliver made the team. He was more than ready for that.

Oliver nodded. He had been a good 'cat'. A slight flush of red crept on his cheeks at Katie's statement, followed by an embarrassed scratch at the back of his neck. "Heh, yeah... well, we could all use more practice. Even Aidan Lynch practices, you know?" Having enough sense to keep his mouth shut about his abilities, Oliver had secretly believed he was better than what he had been when first getting recruited. Never one for arrogance, he was simply used to being a big fish in a small pond at school. "So, I guess I'll see you on the sidelines from time to time."

"I don't know, being so close to start of season, I'm not sure if I'll have to wait. There's a couple openings, but we'll see," Katie said with a wide smile. "You'll get me tickets if I don't get a job, right?" She'd never abuse friends in such a way. She was more than happy to pay her own way.

"Of course I will!" Oliver had a habit of offering his comped tickets to pretty much anyone who asked; it was a known fact and something that resonated well with the fans. Of course he didn't do it just for popularity. "But you'll get a job, Katie, you managed to keep the Aussie players alive and look at everything down there trying to kill them off."

Katie laughed. "Everything tries to kill you, it's true. I have healed non Quidditch injuries. You sometimes just don't ask." It was better that way at times. "No, I can buy my own tickets and I probably will see you from time to time. It'd be difficult who to cheer for."

She was enjoying her time spent with Oliver. It had been much too long. She remembered their brief fling as kids. That was funny. They had no idea what they were doing.

"That's not difficult, Puddlemere is the only answer." Oliver winked. "Well, fair enough but if you ever find yourself without a ticket just owl me." He paused for a moment, a fox like grin spreading across his lips. "But you'll have to cheer for my team. That's the only condition." He'd wanted to say 'for me' but the idea of not being a team player didn't set well with him.

Oliver looked over Katie once more. "You know, I really am glad I ran into you. I wasn't going to come out but, well, you know." Despite his insisting the years had changed Oliver; he was no longer the burly slightly awkward teen with closely cropped hair and a broad Scottish accent. He'd grown out his hair into a short ponytail and the Scottish gave way to a softer London speech.

"I can understand. There are days when I just want to hide away. I'm glad you came here. I hope we can get together again some time." Katie hoped that didn't sound wrong. She didn't want to give him a wrong impression.

"I like your hair, it looks good on you." Her own had been shorter in school, but not by much. Now it was to the middle of her back. Her accent had a bit of Australian here and there, but it wouldn't be long before it was all Britain English.

"I get lost in hiding out, even though I'm not really hiding. I'm just keeping myself busy." That wasn't out of the usual for him, Oliver had always been an on-the-go type of guy, but lately, following the rollercoaster of a relationship with Melinda, his anxiety toward feeling as though he wouldn't be able to perform properly this season, and the mental scars left over from the war he simply busied himself in more work than normal.

"Yeah?" His features brightened, and he toyed with the dark blond tendrils. "You should have seen it earlier this year; it was quite long. I decided to chop it off after a Chaser yanked on it while trying to score a goal. You still look the same, scrappy Katie Bell, except you talk a bit funny." He'd always teased Katie, never maliciously of course, from the way she gripped her broom to the crinkle in her nose to the weird, girly things she would do at Hogwarts.

"Sometimes I hide just to hide. I guess it's a way of restarting my system," Katie said. While she by no means had an introverted personality, every now and then she spent long stretches of times - upwards to three or four days - by herself to just get her mind back in order.

"I'm not scrappy... just..." she couldn't think of a way to describe herself. That was nearly an accurate term. Katie wasn't sure if looking the same was a good thing or not. She was content with how she looked, so she supposed that was all that mattered. "Give me a month or so and I'll be back to talking as funny as you."

"Hah, you're still as easy to rile up as you were at school." Oliver snickered, blue eyes alight with amusement. "I'm kidding; you look great. No worries." He looked down to his watch and sighed. "I need to get going. I've turned into a bit of an old man these past couple of years."

People often wished to Oliver how they could be famous; they seemed to think their lives would be fancy-free and without any rules. Ironically, the further up the fame ladder he traveled the more constricted and regulated his life had become. "See you again some time?"

Katie nodded and stood; she hated having to part ways, but understood completely. "We'll definitely have to do this again. It was fun catching up." She made a move towards him to hug him but stopped herself. "Be safe during practice."
