RP: Sparkly
Who: Lavender Brown, Susan Bones
What: Spot the new jewellery
Where: Department of Magical Law Enforcement, Ministry of Magic
When: Coffee break time
Rating: Probably SFW

This week had been hellishly busy, such a stark contrast to the relaxed, decadent weekend she had spent with her... fiancé.

Right, OK, maybe she couldn't quite say that particular word without fighting back giggles. But she was working on it.

Midway through Tuesday, the first day of trying to pin down a wizard who was going around the countryside blowing up farm animals, Lavender had realised that wearing her ring to work wasn't always going to be possible. As a result, she hadn't been able to tell people as easily as she wanted. After all, what was the fun in telling people you were getting married when the ring was tucked away in a box in your desk drawer.

This morning, they had tracked the bugger down to a farm in Honiton. Unfortunately, they had only apprehended him after he had claimed one last victim. Back at the Ministry, Lavender had plenty of paperwork to fill out, but not before she had washed pieces of, well, charred pork out of her hair. She was going to let the department sort out her laundry because, no, she was not going to touch those robes again before they were clean.

Now all she had to do was get a cup of coffee before she could settle down at her desk. When her favourite mug wasn't where it was supposed to be, a freshly-showered Lavender with her hair pulled back in a plait and engagement ring firmly on her finger headed to the Auror office down the corridor. It was funny how many mugs migrated down there and, after the morning she'd had, she wasn't about to borrow another one.

What she found was even better than her favourite mug. Or who, as it happened. "Susan! I haven't seen you all week."

Susan was, to put it quite frankly, exhausted. She'd spent the previous two weeks spending most of her waking hours - except for a lovely dinner with Lucy - hunting a bunch of dark wizards across most of Britain and France. Her mood wasn't improved by the fact that one of of the wizards had managed to give her a rather depressing scar on her stomach before she killed them.

So it was that she found herself staring into space while she waited for her tea to brew, and consequently didn't notice Lavender until she was nearly on top of her. "Lav, how've you been dear," she paused and looked at her friend with beady eyes for a moment. "Something's different about you? What's different?" She took a quick assessment of her friend and suddenly noticed the ring. "Fuck me, are you engaged?"

From the second Susan had looked up at her, Lavender had started counting. Really, there was no way that Susan Susan wouldn't notice. The fun part for Lavender was seeing exactly how long it would take. Lavender grinned, having not even reached ten. That meant she owed Cormac a galleon.

"You have good eyes," she teased, offering her hand forward so that Susan could see the delicate gold and garnet ring without having to grab. "He asked me last week but work has been so gross and I haven't seen you since it happened." She smiled widely, pleased that she'd managed to catch Susan before she read it in the Prophet; the announcement was due to be published today.

Susan rolled her eyes and took the proffered hand, inspecting the ring with interest. "Of course I do darling, I'm an Auror. It's what we do, ring spotting. The dark wizard hunting is just a side line we all fall into." She went back to assessing the ring and then grinned at it's owner. "It's a beautiful ring to be sure, and a beautiful man. Was the proposal similarly beautiful?" She waggled her eyebrows. "So we're going to turn the old Teutonic custom on it's head and stuff him into a sack and magic him into the wedding grove right?"

"I always knew dark wizard catching was always a just a hobby for you."

Lavender smiled slyly. "It was actually very understated. I should probably be miffed that he didn't even get down on one knee, but he was talking and suddenly he was holding the ring and babbling and... he asked me." She was beaming by then, unable to keep the smile from her lips.

"Um, excuse me, there will be no stuffing anyone in a sack. For a start, it would ruin my beautiful man's pretty robes."

"I just like to keep busy you know," Susan drawled in reply. "Plus, someone's got to do it and it might as well be someone who enjoys going through life like they're being dragged backwards through a hedge."

Susan grinned in response to her friend's smile. "That's better I think, then the whole cliché. It definitely shows more - I don't know - intimacy wouldn't you say?"

She snorted and nodded. "Fine fine, we wouldn't want your pretty boy looking anything less than pretty on your big day, would we?"

"It was perfect." Lavender agreed quietly. "I couldn't have asked for anything better." Even if it had been a little bit distracting suddenly presented with the ring before he'd actually asked her. The intimacy of it was appreciated, though knowing Cormac as she did, she was sure it could have easily been a much flashier affair.

"We will both be at our prettiest. Or he might still be prettier." Nervous as hell, she suspected, but handsome enough to make her feel weak at the knees. "I fully expect you to help me pick out my dress, by the way."
