Boys!
Who: Susan and Lucy
What: Lucy needs to ask if she can have a boy over
Where: Susan's house, the kitchen
When: Wednesday 29th July, evening [backdated]
Rating: SFW for now

Trying to get ahead for a predicted long lunch on Thursday, Lucy had worked through her lunch hour and only eaten a salad. She liked salad well enough, but was in the mood for something more substantial for dinner, so she'd come home, changed and headed out to the shop to see what she could find. By the time Susan arrived home, she'd already taken over the kitchen, a couple of steaks waiting by the stove, chips in the oven and peppercorn sauce reducing in a pan. "Hi!" she said brightly, when Shadow's enthusiastic barking alerted her to Susan's return. "I'm making dinner. At least, I will be unless you've already eaten. Steak and chips. And there's wine."

Lucy liked to cook, and she'd done so for Susan a number of times since moving in, only partly because she wanted some way to pay back her generosity. Today, though, she did have something of an ulterior motive - she had a favour to ask, and she was sure Susan would say yes, but it didn't hurt to make sure she was in a good mood.

Susan apparated into the entrance hall of her house with an audible sigh. She'd started the day in Herefordshire and ended it in Normandy, chasing after a gang of dark wizards who refused to stay cornered.

Still, she'd managed to leave at a not so horrific time, and after greeting an enthusiastic Shadow, headed through the dining room and into the kitchen, towards the sound of cooking, her stomach informing her that food would be a very good idea. "Hi," she replied with a tired smile. "That sounds delightful," she added, sitting down on one of the benches at the island to talk more easily with her friend. "I particularly like the wine part. Wine is definitely a thing I'd like." She tilted her head and examined Lucy expertly for a moment. "So to what do I owe the pleasure of this delightful meal?"

Until Lucy actually put the steaks on, there wasn't a lot she needed to do - so she poured Susan a glass of red wine and pushed it across the island towards her. She knew that Susan would probably have used magic to do it, where Lucy still did things by hand, but it didn't bother her as much as it once would have. Working with Rich, in an office filled with computers and telephones, while picking up magical hobbies seemingly left, right and centre had made her feel less of an outsider.

"You owe it to being an amazing friend who not only lets me live here but also lets me invite boys over," Lucy informed her, smiling. "One boy, anyway. I told Bryn I'd make him dinner after he'd had the shop open for a week - but it is technically your kitchen so you've every right to refuse if you want to." It was absolutely true that if Susan had any qualms at all about Bryn coming over, Lucy would made other arrangements - but at the same time, Lucy trusted Susan not to insist on it unless she had a very good reason.

Susan accepted the proffered glass of red wine gratefully, and took a moment to admire the quality before taking an unladylike sip and putting it down. Not for the first time, Susan noticed the fact that Lucy did a lot of things with her hands, and added it to growing suspicions filed away in the labyrinth that was her brain.

"Well in that case I'm more than happy to oblige," she agreed. "Plus of course I'd let you have a boy over, particularly Bryn. Plus, using the kitchen is fine." She paused and took another long sip of her drink. "If you want me to keep a low profile I can go and hang out with my brother on that night? He's well past being due a hangout session with his sister. Plus that way I won't be around if you decide to screw on the dining table."

Lucy laughed. "I don't think Bryn's quite that type," she said, with just a trace of insecurity. Though he'd agreed to the date, Lucy still hadn't seen any particular attraction to her in Bryn's manners. Perhaps that would come with time, it was still definitely early days and she'd yet to make any sort of move herself to really test the waters. "But just in case, I think we'd all appreciate if you didn't walk in on that."

Taking a sip of cider from her own bottle on the counter, Lucy expertly flipped the steaks onto the stove. "How do you want your meat?" she asked.

Susan laughed easily and nodded. "And more's the better to be quite frank - find yourself a nice young man who doesn't just want to shag you on the the first available surface is my motto. Or at least it would be, if I had a motto. Or indeed, that I could follow such a motto were I to have one." She took another ruminative sip, forcing her mind to not wander down any dark paths. "Still, I'll keep out of your hair. Though I'm still very excited that you got asked out on a date."

"Black and ugly, like my soul," she replied glibly, before ruining it with a snort of derision. "No, not really. Medium-rare thank you darling."

"Well, obviously," Lucy agreed. "I don't want someone who just wants to shag me - but at the same time, he still has to want to shag me, if that makes sense?" She didn't need it to be right now, so she was still hoping it would manifest eventually. She raised an eyebrow at Susan's incorrect assumption. "Do I strike you as a woman who has to wait to be asked out?" she asked, smiling. "I'd expect better from you, Susan! I asked him." And, irrationally, perhaps that was where some of the insecurity was coming from.

The steaks were beginning to sizzle and Lucy hovered close to keep an eye on them. "Pretty and pink it is, then," she said. "But a little tougher on the outside."

Susan chuckled and nodded in agreement. "That makes perfect sense. Physical compatibility is as important as emotional and psychological compatibility," she agreed. She lifted her eyebrows, feeling equal parts surprised and pleased. "You did? Excellent! Taking charge is always the best cause of action!"

She snorted and nodded. "Sounds perfect." She took another sip of wine and smiled at her friend. "So how was your day then?"

Lucy shrugged slightly. "I forget you weren't around when I was starting to date," she admitted. She'd never had any time in school, though she'd had a few harmless, fleeting crushes on older boys who were comfortingly impossible prospects. Perhaps people had assumed she stayed in her room or the library because she was shy. Certainly when she'd got out into the muggle word she hadn't been the kind of girl who needed to be chased. "With the kind of guys I tend to like, if I waited for them to ask I'd be waiting forever." She smirked, eyes glittering. "Besides. I like taking them by surprise and proving that I'm interested."

Lucy turned the steaks, prodding at them gently and then curling her index finger in towards her thumb and touching the muscle by her thumb to compare. "Busy," she answered. "I'm heading to the Ministry over lunch tomorrow, so I wanted to get ahead."
