Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:character: alicia spinnet, character: genie de la lune

RP: Finding some aid
Who: Genie and Alicia (and open?)

What: Genie is getting off her butt and making enquiries for Owen.

Where: Foundation offices.

When: around 11am or so

Rating: Probably SFW? Unless Genie curses in her thoughts. Will change as necessary.

Genie had finally kicked herself enough that she was going to do what they’d said she would do when they first came to London. Hell, a lot of why they’d decided to come to London was for Owen, but she’d let herself get distracted… and to be honest, she was procrastinating as well. She finally had a foothold in the wizarding world where no one had yet figured out her secret, at least that they’d said or implied or looked at her funny, and she enjoyed the freedom far too much.

She hesitated at the door to the foundation. She’d heard about them and about their good works; she they were the ones she rather thought she’d talk to first, before going to the Ministry. The Ministry would probably out Owen and her and her pack. She at least stood a chance with an agency of keeping some secrecy for him, and herself. But oh, how she dreaded seeing that look on anyone’s face again, even someone well meaning. They nearly all had it, the people who found out, if they weren’t outright hateful.

Genie took a deep breath and pushed open the door, looking around curiously and trying to figure out which way she should go.

Since Tuesday, Alicia had been restless. After she had finally gotten Oliver to St. Mungo’s, she had gone back to Tavistock Square, only to find that all the casualties had been treated and sent off, and there was nothing more she could do. So, she had gone to Adrian’s flat, and more or less collapsed when the adrenaline had worn off and everything had started settling in. But even though she was exhausted, it had been hard for her to sit still. She kept worrying about her children, though she knew they were safe and sound in Bath, however she was far too tired to Apparate to them and she knew how much her mum hated the mess that came with Flooing. She worried about Oliver, about how he had been concussed again and that so soon after his last concussion. She worried about the people she had seen today, about the city, about the future, about the Foundation, about Daniel’s family, about Adrian, his family, his little niece, even his father, and she had finally accepted a Calming Draught from him when she had jumped up and rushed to the bathroom just to make sure that he had enough toothpaste.

At least the restlessness had slowed down quite a bit, though she still found it difficult to sit still, unless she was checking documents to make sure that they were all filled out and handled correctly. This time of year, the Foundation offices were pretty quiet, with most of the staff taking their vacation time before the big rush that was bound to start in a couple of weeks. So Alicia had taken up station out front where she could easily get to any and all files and documents in the place and still keep an eye on who entered. She had just found the file on Matilda Matthews in the cabinet out back, when she heard someone enter from the Alley.

“Hello,” she greeted the newcomer as she came out into the reception area, putting down the parchments for later perusing and held out her hand to the witch who… she looked so familiar, but Alicia couldn’t place her at all. “I’m Alicia. How can I help you?”

"Hi, yeah." Gods, Genie felt awkward, like she hadn't felt in a long time. She vaguely recognized Alicia from Gryffindor and from around the Alley and such. She tugged on a curl. "I'd like to talk to someone about interfacing with Hogwarts on behalf of an incoming student." She'd rehearsed the words, but it was harder to say, to be vague, than she'd thought it would be. But then, Owen's secret was her secret as well.

She took Alicia's hand and shook firmly, careful of her strength. Her skin was a little warmer than most people's, running hot as always from her affliction. She glanced around. "Is there a little more private of a spot to talk?" she asked, knowing it would put her in a more vulnerable position but needing to know she wouldn't be easily overheard. It was bad enough someone or ones was going to find out about her pack without worrying that the world could hear about it.

Alicia nodded pensively as she listened. The witch’s words sounded… practiced, like they didn’t really belong in her mouth, at least not in this setting, and it was by far not the first time Alicia had met someone on Foundation premises sounding not unlike this witch.

Shaking the witch’s hand, Alicia still kept an eye on her, noting her the way she did players when they were recuperating or new recipients of the Foundation’s help. “Of course,” she said with a smile, not hesitating to go along with the wish for privacy. ‘Interfacing with someone on behalf of someone else’ had an air of highly desired privacy to it. “My office is just down here,” she continued, gesturing down the hall and made sure to grab a tray with coffee, tea, and water on the way as she walked with the other witch.

“Please, have a seat and please, help yourself,” she offered as she gestured to the chair across the desk from her own. It hadn’t escaped her notice that the other witch hadn’t introduced herself, however, she would enquire about her identity later when it seemed more in tune with the need for discretion. “Now, I want to assure you that anything you tell me here today stays between the two of us, and should the need for other people being made aware, I will only do so with your permission. It’s not unlike Healer/Patient confidentiality, really.”

Genie followed half a step behind Alicia, grateful that her request for privacy had been so easily granted. She was paranoid, perhaps, but everything in her experience, both before and after her getting turned into a werewolf, pointed to the upmost need for caution. She sat on the front of her seat and started to make herself a cup of coffee, more to give her hands something to do than for a desire for something to drink.

"Thank you. I appreciate that," she said and then sighed. "I'm just going to be blunt, then, because I'm no good at subtlety or having a light touch." She gathered her not inconsiderable Gryffindor courage around her. "My... foster brother, for lack of a better term, is eleven and he's going to go to Hogwarts in the fall. He, like me, is a werewolf, bitten during the war. You can see the obvious problems, I'm sure," she said, laying it out there even more bluntly than she'd possibly intended, her eyes raising to meet Alicia's in a look that was half challenge and half assessment to see how she would react to this information.

Alicia nodded, encouraging the other witch to continue with the bluntness and lack of subtlety she had just warned her about, and as she kept her eyes on the other witch’s she saw a glint that she recognized from many of her friends. And her realization that she was sitting with a Gryffindor that she remembered vaguely though couldn’t name, came at the same time as the witch revealed herself to be a werewolf.

“I’m sorry that happened to you,” she said earnestly, her mind flooding with everything she knew about lycanthropy, from Wolfsbane Potion to Professor Lupin to the physical traumas werewolves’ bodies went through during the full moon. Werewolves were frightening because there was no cure and because lunatics like Fenrir Greyback had terrorized the Wizarding World for years, but then there were people… wizards… werewolves like Professor Lupin, who had made a difference without her even knowing about his ailments. Though her memories were fuzzy, she knew he had fought near her during the Battle and in school he had taught her so much. Professor Lupin was the one she kept in mind now. “And I see your problem.”

Pouring herself a cup of coffee while she considered how best to help, she realized that she couldn’t just offer up everything without knowing exactly what it was they were looking for. “We can help you,” she said with a confident smile. “I’ll need some more information, of course, some of it I’ll have to take to Headmisstress McGonagall, and there will be certain conditions you’ll have to meet in order for this to happen, but we can help you.”

"Thanks. It is what it is." She shrugged. She was rarely cynical but dealing with her affliction in the wizarding world was one of the few times she was. She slowly stirred some sugar into her coffee, again mostly for something to do. The last time they'd been found out, they'd had to move very fast since a few of the wizards in town had taken decided exception to the pack's existence.

"Of course. I figured you would, and conditions are nothing new to us," she said. "We're a cautious sort and we take care of each other the best we can." Safety in numbers, safety in the pack. Every one of their members could be trusted, unlike some of the ones who came and went in turns. "Professor McGonagall was always pretty good to all of us. I was hoping she'd help, even if Owen might not be a Gryffindor." She suspected he would be, but that never meant everything. There were always surprises. "Owen's a good boy, very smart. Good on a broom, too." Her lips quirked up a bit. "I want him to get the education most of us couldn't continue to pursue after the war."

“It is what it is,” Alicia agreed with a small smile. The other witch was right; there was nothing that could be done about the Lycanthropy, but at least now, Alicia had a way of making life easier for this woman and her family. She was proud, though, that much was clear to see, and Alicia sincerely doubted that she would accept just being given everything she wanted to offer her to ensure the best possible life for Owen, a child in need due to what had happened during the war. Maybe his Lycanthropy didn’t make him exactly the kind of children they focused on, but he was still a child in need of support that they so easily could provide.

“I see you remember Professor McGonagall as well as I do,” Alicia chuckled, “which is also why I’m guessing you won’t be surprised when I tell you that it’ll be much easier to get her help if we’ve already done the best we could to make everything run smoothly from this side.” Of course, even if they didn’t, even if this witch had simply gone directly to the Headmistress, Alicia was certain that her old Head of House would do everything in her power to make anything happen, and that might even include going to the Foundation for help. “As the co-founder of this foundation, I have to uphold my responsibilities in making sure that we’re represented properly, too, of course, which is why the first condition will be mandatory Wolfsbane Potion for Owen, you, and any other Lycanthrope in your family. We will supply the Potion for you, and that way should anything go wrong, it will be our responsibility, and not yours. Secondly…” Alicia cleared her throat. “It’s no secret that Lycanthropes have an unfairly hard life in the Wizarding World. Believe me, I it wasn’t so, but it is, and I know that more often than not, you’re paid less than your equals if you’re even lucky enough to get a position anywhere. So I want to make sure that Owen has a proper home to return to during school holidays. Therefore we’ll be making monthly payments towards your rent, simply to ensure that, and Owen along with anyone from your household will be part of the annual back-to-Hogwarts outing in Diagon and Monument Allies in August.” She looked at the witch, hoping that she would accept those conditions. “Would that work for you, Miss..?”

"I do." She'd been tempted to go straight to the Headmistress, but she also knew the woman was of a generation whose hatred of werewolves had in part at least formed the current legalities she and her pack struggled against every day. She hadn't been sure if the risk would pay off. If it had been just her, she would have done it, but they couldn't afford to send him off on the continent, een if he could speak a foreign language, which he couldn't.

"Of course!" she said, biting her tongue on saying anything sharp or untoward or overly defensive. "We always take the potion, and we go out of town during the moon, just to be safe. I make it, or we find enough money to buy it if we can't get the ingredients in time." And it was hard, since she wasn't a licensed maker, and certain ingredients were restricted. And that everything cost so much money to buy that making ends meet often revolved around if they would have enough potion, and if one of them had to go without, guarding that person constantly during the moon.

"So far no one here outside of you knows what I am," she said bluntly. "Or if they suspect, they haven't said anything to me yet. Probably because they don't expect us to be here of all places. One of my mates stays mostly in the muggle world even though he's not a full were, just because his scars could give it away." They were so careful. It had the unfortunate side effect of keeping most friendships on a more superficial level than she wanted, and relationships there too. She tugged steadily on one tightly sprung curl. "Our family can manage ourselves," she said carefully. "He'll always have a home with us." And best not to admit that he wasn't biologically related to any of them, but an orphan of the war. She might never see him again. "Though I wouldn't refuse any money toward his schooling and school supplies.

The curl was tugged again. "De la Lune," she supplied, her smile a little brittle. It wasn't unheard of to change one's name especially if one were disowned, which though she formally wasn't, she hadn't heard from her family in so many years now. "Genie de la Lune."
