Juggling all the things
Who: Genie and Violet (NPC) and OPEN

What: Shopping

Where: one of the apothecaries (whichever works for you!)

When: June 23, midmorning

Rating: NSFW for language, likely

Genie was, unusually for her, fighting a pounding headache. It wasn’t her day to care for Violet except that Galahad had gotten called in for an extra shift and they needed the money, so it had derailed her plans for the day of shopping for her potions brewing. Since some of it was urgent, well, she’d ended up having to take Violet along.

Except Vi wasn’t feeling well, and she was being fussy and whiny, and Genie hadn’t had proper sleep in days because of her work schedules, so her head was actually starting to pound. She had Vi propped on a hip, jiggling her as she sang softly to her as she went around the apothecary, trying to take in the ingredients and make sure they were fresh and load them in a basket on her free arm, and it really wasn’t working terribly well, but she didn’t have much choice in the matter.

She wanted to growl in frustration. Damnitall to hell and back, but she felt a bit overburdened at the moment.

Gwenog was poking around Slug and Jigger's for a few bits and pieces. She didn't make potions very often, but a. some of the ingredients actually had non-potion related uses and b. she was pretty sure a couple of the ingredients she usually kept on hand were beyond use or used up. She'd made a note of what she wanted to buy and took her jar of a bark she rather suspected was too much dust and not enough bark to be of any use. She knew there was someone with a small child somewhere around because she could hear them making noise. Although nothing particularly loud as yet.

She rounded a corner of an aisle and almost walked straight into a young woman with a small child on her hip. She clucked her tongue and stepped sideways just as the woman also stepped to the side. "You stand still, I'll move," she said sharply.

Genie's smile of apology for being in the way morphed from genuine to something rather too toothy to be a smile. Even though the moon was not quite near, she and the wolf both took exception to being ordered around. "By all means, after you," she said, giving her a tiny little bow. She managed to keep from calling her a mocking 'your grace' but it was a close thing. Some things rubbed her the wrong way and being commanded by someone who wasn't her alpha or a partner was one of them.

She cooed quietly at Vi, who had started to fuss again. "Easy there, baby girl. We'll get what you need to make you feel better," she murmured. She knew her irritation likely wasn't making anything better with the little girl. She was in a mood to start with, and this hadn't helped a thing.

The 'smile' such as it was didn't bother Gwenog in the slightest, she'd been faced with ruder for far less. The comment though just made her smirk and walk past, head held high. "You've got a child and a basket, I've got less shit to move," she said, indicating the small pack of licorice root which was the only thing in her hands. The jar she'd brought with her currently tucked into a magically expanded pocket in her jacket.

She turned her back to the woman and crouched down to look on the bottom shelf for the willow bark. It was one of those things that never seemed to be in the same place. And she needed to find the dried nettles too. Technically she could pick and dry her own but she always seemed to under or over do it, and she'd read a note about using nettles not from your own garden was better when you wanted to use it in a herbicide. She glanced back at the child as it started to make a noise again and huffed quietly. Children were definitely not her thing, but it wasn't like she was actually causing a problem so Gwenog showed restraint and kept her mouth shut. The woman seemed irritable enough as it was and all Gwenog wanted was to get her ingredients and leave.

Genie bounced and tried to soothe, eyes scanning the shelf. She was irritated by her own irritability. It was so annoying to her because generally she was so positive and perky. She heard the puff of air and her hackles wanted to raise, but she knew most people didn't want a fussy kid around. She was even finding it trying today and she adored Violet absolutely. She clamped down on her annoyance as she set down her basket to measure out a bit of quills one handed.

Her eyes cut down to the other woman, and she sighed softly herself. "Sorry," she said. "I had no one to watch her today and I have to get this stuff. I can probably help you find what you need, though, I'm here a lot." She went around through the various apothecaries, price and quality shopping, frequently.

Having pulled out a jar which turned out to be weeping willow bark instead of the regular Gwenog muttered to herself in irritated Welsh as she shoved it back again, set on ignoring the woman and her child. Although now that she thought about it the woman looked faintly familiar, although she hadn't a clue where from. She saw so many people that she'd stopped trying to keep track too closely. She'd not slept with her, she knew that much because it was one thing she did try and keep track of. Plus people were more memorable when you'd got really up close and personal with them.

Gwenog huffed when the woman spoke again, glancing at the child and then deciding to ignore it, her apparently, unless she made even more noise. She just made a vaguely agreeing noise. Frankly Gwenog was just glad her nieces lived in Canada. They were so relentlessly into pink and glitter and things she really hadn't ever reconciled herself to outside of ballet performance (or Pride type events in the case of glitter). She loved them, but most other children she avoided outside of fans approaching her, and if they were old enough to be fans she could at least talk to them.

She looked up at the offer and shrugged. "Sure if you know where the willow bark and the dried nettles are I'll go be... elsewhere, and you can get back to childcare and shopping instead of whatever this is," she said waving her hand between them.

She ground her teeth softly at the huffing noises, annoyed, but was now intent on ignoring them as best she could. It wasn't very good, her face revealed a bit of it, but she just grit and bore it. It wasn't her fault that Vi was feeling bad. Or that she suddenly had care of her today.

Genie pointed to a jar with one sandaled foot, one off to the side and not in order. "Gods only know why, but he parks the willow there this week. The nettles are at the top behind the dried lotus petals." Even if she hadn't been here recently, despite the myriad of smells she could still locate most things by scent. "And again, so sorry Violet is annoying you. She's ill often and can't help it."

"Nothing is ever the same when I come in," she said, moving over to where the woman had indicated the willow was. "Thanks." Before she moved over to the nettles she looked over at the woman and her face twisted into a smile that wasn't quite friendly, but also wasn't cruel. "It's not Violet really. I know I get shit for admitting it because I'm a woman, but I don't like children. Don't want children, and I'm fucking terrible at dealing with them. As my publicists discovered when they decided meeting tiny fans was a great way to soften up my image," she said, snorting softly at the disastrous memory. Luckily for Gwenog they had learned their lesson since then.

"That's my choice though, you've got a kid and you're taking care of her. It's not really my business unless you're beating her up or something, which you aren't." She shrugged and moved over to the nettles, grabbing the jar to take to the counter. She'd learned not to handle them without gloves if she didn't want to be scratching her hands for hours.

"I think they do it to fuck with people," Genie said dryly. "I consider it a challenge, only they never give me a trophy when I win." Which was a bit of a gyp, really, but there was no way to bitch about it. "Some people are taht way, and some kids are hell. Vi is generally a good baby except she's felt bad for days." She still worried, deep down, that violet would die. A baby's body could only take so much.

"She's my foster sister, but yeah, I do." She was probably the only kid Genie was ever going to get, too. She glanced at the jar. "You want me to grab the quantity you want, there? They don't bother me much."

"I understand the impulse even if I think it makes shit business sense," she said, rather fond of fucking with people herself at times. She shrugged in acknowledgement of the woman's point. At least she wasn't saying any of the tired phrases Gwenog had heard far too often from everyone from her Dad to journalists and random members of the public.

She glanced between the woman and the jar and shrugged. "Sure, that'd be great," she said. "I need a couple of generous handfuls, maybe three depending on the size of your hands. I'm out so a little extra won't hurt. I have a bag," she said, fishing in one of her pockets and producing a paper bag she'd picked up earlier in her hunt. She set down the jar for a second, then opened out both it and the bag before moving back to the young woman, holding out he open jar and bag so she could portion out Gwenog's nettles with one hand and put them in the bag.

"Honestly, when has the wizarding world ever shown an ounce of good business sense?" Genie said dryly. "They probably think the treasure hunt is fun, like the freaking Ravenclaws always did with those damned riddles on their door." She snorted softly. She only knew of those because of her brother, but she thought they were th emost ridiculous thing, especially since not all smart people were the sort who found riddles easy or fun.

Once the lid was open, Genie shifted Vi to her other hip and carefully plucked out the nettles into the paper bag that was offered. They stung her but only a little, and they'd be well enough healed in a bit that she wouldn't remember they'd hurt at all. Besides, her pain threshold was rather higher than most to top it. "That enough, or a little more?" she asked.

"Oh, I don't know, Wingbeat was a good idea and they have queer nights too so I found people I don't have to keep the magic quiet from, but yeah, mostly I see what you mean though," she said. "Never went to Ravenclaw though, well not inside," she said with a smirk. She'd been near enough to the door to hear the riddles a few times after walking dates home.

Gwenog assessed the amount of nettles and tilted her head. "Little more, I think. Like I said, bit much won't hurt. I have enough of the other ingredients to just make extra," she said. When the woman was done she set the jar down and closed it up again. "Thank you," she said. She might not always be the nicest person but she didn't completely lack manners. "For all your help."

Genie grinned easily at that. "Oh, yeah, that, but Charlie has sense. I work there," she said offhandedly. "Wingbeat's the best place I've ever worked in the wizarding world." Which was true. Her other decent jobs had all been in the muggle world. "My brother was a 'claw. Plus I dated a few of them."

She grabbed another decent-sized handful and dropped it in. "They keep for a while too, so even if you have extra, you'll be good." She idly nibbled at a finger, the sting not bothering her but the action automatic. "You're very welcome. I'm glad I could help somehow."

"Well at least someone has sense," she said. Now that she thought about it she might have seen the woman behind the bar, but the context and lighting was all wrong, she would never have made the connection on her own. She just smirked and nodded, her body language indicating she knew how dating Ravenclaws went.

Gwenog wrapped up the bag too and nodded. "They won't hang around long, I only tend to brew in the off-season," she said with a slight shrug. She needed the herbicide for the gardener to use for a good while, and it was thankfully a potion that kept well and was innocuous enough to give to the muggle guy who did her garden, well, once it was in a reassuringly plastic spray bottle.

"I'll probably see you at the club some time then," she said, slotting the jars back onto the shelf and walking away, one hand raised as a goodbye, a little grin thrown over her shoulder as she rounded the corner and headed for the counter.

Genie smirked back. Ah, yes, Ravenclaws.

"Do come by the bar. I'll spot you a drink on the house," she said in a moment of spontaneous generosity. She waved back and then ran her hand over Violet's soft hair, the child quieter now, face resting on her shoulder.
