The Perfect Sandwich
Who: Lucy and Bryn
What: Sandwich tasting
Where: Bryn's premises
When: Wednesday lunchtime
Rating: SFW

Lucy didn't know where she stood with Bryn. That was probably partly her own fault - usually, when she liked someone she went after them pretty obviously. She had no qualms about being the one to ask a guy on a date. Coming back to the wizarding world had shaken her confidence, at least at first, and the fact that they'd met when she 'won' him probably wasn't helping any. Nor was the fact that she was weirdly ambivalent about her own feelings. He was attractive, and she liked him but didn't know if it actually went deeper than that. If he expressed an interest would she just be flattered, or would she actually want to see if it went anywhere? There were just too many questions and not enough answers.

Deciding to err on the side of 'subtle' (as well as she could, anyway), Lucy decided against just asking. Instead, she dressed up a little more than usual for their lunch to see if she noticed any interest on his end. The top she wore was athletic, but still looked feminine enough to be sexy. It was a good continuation of the racing leathers she'd worn with Rich, and made her feel more or less the same. Confident, sexy, happy. Whether this was lunch with a friend or something more, she would rock it.

She'd taken the day off, spent the morning swimming and splashing around in Susan's pool before getting out to dry off and get ready. The floo took her to Finnigan's and she walked from there to Bryn's new premises. Since he was providing the food, she'd taken it upon herself to bring drinks - two bottles of nice cider which she carried in a tote bag over her shoulder. Once she reached the right shopfront - and looked approvingly at the sign - she knocked on the door and stepped back to wait.

"Cheers," Lucy said happily, clinking her glass against Bryn's. "You can't go wrong with a good bacon butty," she agreed. "Where do you stand on the brown sauce / ketchup debate, or will you offer both?" Curious, she pulled the selection of sandwiches a little closer, trying to identify them without touching. "What've we got?" she asked, eventually deciding it was easier than trying to guess.

"You know, I think it'll be a hit," she announced. "This street really needed a lunch place. I know the pub does food, but somewhere where you can grab something to go appeals to more people. "And you could offer picnic baskets - there's enough space in the garden area for a couple of people to sit down with food."

Bryn gave a dramatic sigh, suggesting he had been subject to this debate more than a few times of late. "Well, I'm going to serve both, but I'm a ketchup man." He took a sip of his drink, then turned his attention to explaining the selection of fillings he'd chosen for today. Bryn had been careful not to make them all cheese based, despite his own preferences. "I think I'm going to have a slightly bigger tasting party just before I open," he added. "You'll have to come."

He nodded carefully. It was another idea to file away with the dozen or so others that people had offered up over the last few weeks. To be honest, some had more merit than others. "Yeah, that was my thinking. Touch wood it all goes smoothly."

Lucy couldn't explain why, but there was something endearing about the seriousness with which Bryn had taken the question. It was such a mundane, homely thing to be so decided about. Lucy wouldn't have cared which way he answered - but she did like that he had a definite opinion, even if he'd offer both options to his customers. "A man after my own heart," she said, offering him a flirtatious grin across the table.

She listened carefully as he described the options, deciding to start with something simple and satisfying, with a good strong mature cheddar. Susan had all sorts of fancy cheeses at home, and Lucy liked experimenting with them, but there was just something about the traditional cheddar-bread-butter combination, with or without pickle, that was comforting. "I'd love to come," she said, after she'd swallowed her first bite. Obligingly, she curled her hand into a fist and rapped (gently) on the wooden tabletop. "I think it will, if this sandwich is anything to go by. I'm in heaven right now."

The smile she have him seemed like flirting to Bryn and he took that as a good thing.

He blushed a little at her words, ducking his head bashfully for a moment before reaching for his drink. "Flatterer," he said with a grin. "Keep that up and you'll give me a big head."

Lucy smiled at Bryn's blush and shook her head. "You deserve it, though," she said. "Look at what you made happen!" She gestured around the shop. She couldn't help but be genuinely impressed by it all - and by the sandwich, which really was good.

"Once you've been open for a week I'll make you dinner to celebrate," Lucy offered. "You'll probably appreciate having someone else to cook for you." She had a feeling Bryn was going to spend every waking moment in the shop for a while after it opened, it was only natural - and he was a Hufflepuff too.

"You know, I'm still trying to take it all in. A few months ago this was all just scribbles on napkins."

He paused halfway to taking a bite of the roast beef and horseradish mayo sandwich - hopefully the mayonnaise was slightly less potent than the last batch - and smiled. "Really? That would be great. I'd like that a lot."

"It's been a pretty crazy year," Lucy agreed. In January, she'd still been living in the muggle world, working a muggle job - and now, not only did she live and work in the wizarding world but she'd taken up magical hobbies. "I can't decide if moving in with Susan seems like days ago - or years."

Grinning at the fact her invitation apparently merited a pause in operation sandwich, Lucy nodded. "I'm quite a good cook, I'll have you know," she added. "Is there anything you don't eat?"

"Yeah, I guess you've had even more life changes than me." When he'd first met Lucy back in October, she'd only been dipping her toes back into the wizarding community.

"That's good to know." Bryn shrugged languidly, always up for a new culinary adventure. "I'll try most things. Feel free to surprise me."

Lucy shrugged, taking another bite of her sandwich before replying. "It's not a competition," she pointed out. "And you made this happen. I just sort of... fell into things. Not that I'm complaining. IE is good, and Richard is great, and I think I'll stick around for a while - but it's not really what I want to do forever."

She smiled, always pleased not to have too many restrictions placed on her cooking because she tended to use recipes more as inspiration than actual guidelines, and was open to changing them according to supply, or mood, or just whim. "It's a date, then."

"I'm sure you'll figure out what it is you want to do long term." Lucy seemed to have that Hufflepuff resilience, Bryn thought. "Took me a while of working for different people too."

Smiling, Bryn felt more confident reading the situation between them now that she said that. A date. Lush. "Yeah, it is."
