Dean's rise to the surface and Lucy's trajectory towards him would have intersected had Lucy not been paying enough attention to slow her pace and hang back, trading water as Dean came up for air. "Are you okay?" she asked, raising her voice to be heard over their combined splashing. Now that Dean's head was above water there was less urgency about the situation, and Lucy became aware that her heart was racing from her aborted rescue mission. She bit her lip, trying not to laugh until she could be sure the swimmer was okay. It was definitely an unorthodox way to meet someone.
