In Memoriam
Who: Open
What: Memorial 'Service' of sorts
Where: Phoenix statue on Monument Alley
When: Sunday 3rd May, after sundown
Rating: SFW for now

Though the Ministry had announced the place and time of this year's Victis Honor Memorial, they hadn't revealed the exact nature of the event. In past years, people had often gathered at various places across the country - the Hogwarts grounds, Hogsmeade, Dumbledore's tomb and Monument Alley among them - after dark to send up sparks of light into the sky. This year, some clever Ministry official had decided to take advantage of the tradition, and make it even more spectacular.

For the week leading up to Victis Honor day the phoenix statue in Monument Alley had been specially charmed to attract any passing 'lumos' incantations. When darkness fell on the Sunday, each light it had collected would appear somewhere on the stone surface. As more and more lights were added, the idea was that the statue would be covered entirely in light - and at that point, it would flicker like flame for a brief moment and then the statue would be revealed once more, in a slightly different position - as if the phoenix had risen from the ashes.

The first few years of celebrations Hermione had been dreadful. People had hailed the trio with celebrity when all they had wanted to do was move forward and lead normal lives like everyone else. Thankfully, the further time took them from the actual events of the day the less people hailed their bravery as stories of everyday people doing extraordinary things had made their way to the surface. It was those stories Hermione focused on when she wanted to reflect on the real heroes of the war.

Now, here she stood a full seven years later just another face in the crowd. As the sun disappeared she turned in the direction of the sounds of awe that were beginning to come from others in the vicinity. The statue that stood in the middle of the area of focus was being pierced by rays of light that seemed to be coming from the inside. As she stood she watched more lights break through at what seemed to be well timed intervals. "Absolutely fascinating magic," she said her voice just loud enough to audible by anyone within a few feet.

Richard had visited Anna's grave early Saturday morning, then gone to the... shouldn't really call it a festival, at Hogsmeade where he'd worked the Bluebottle Brooms booth when he wasn't doing demo flights. The tandem run with Ollie had gone over rather well, if he did say so himself.

But Sunday morning was just another day waking up alone in his flat. So he'd gone into the office and caught up on paperwork for most of the day in preparation for the Monday morning meeting they had planned. Sundown found him headed over to Monument Alley in search of something to eat, and maybe just a little bit to be surrounded by living people again. The crowd gathering around the phoenix statue had drawn his attention.

"Pretty lights," he nodded as he agreed with Hermione - everybody knew who she was. "Magic as performance art. Impressive."

Hermione hadn't realized that anyone within earshot was actually paying attention to her when she spoke. Turning to see who had spoken she recognized the individual as Richard Summerby though they weren't exactly friends. "Yes, I've seen other displays but this one is quite unique." Normally there was some sort of visible trigger and the effect didn't last too long. "The time release element is simply amazing. It takes a great deal of knowledge to set up such a spell. Not to mention the skill necessary to create the lighting effects."

Rich chuckled. "Like I said, pretty lights. Haven't a clue how they might have done it. Just know somebody, or bodies, must have put in a lot of work on it."

Not that he was weak at charms - he had made it in to Auror training. But these days he mostly concentrated on charms for his racing brooms and magic related to his fighting styles, weapons and armor.

Charlie had been lurking around the statue in Monument Alley for quite a while, mostly trying to stay at the edge of the crowd. At least unlike the day before this was a more sombre event. He knew that Victis Honor day needed to move on and he honestly was feeling a little easier about it with each passing year, but he'd still not stayed long and had ended up going home and drinking far more than usual.

After mostly recovering from his hangover he'd gone and spent the day at his parents' house remembering all sorts of things about Fred, and all of his other siblings too.

He'd watched as the points of light slowly emerged, trying to focus on a bright future not the lights that had been extinguished by war. Mostly he was succeeding. He had to admit that the statue was beautiful. The Ministry had got it right this year, or as right as it was ever likely to be.
