Cakes/Chit-chat: Melinda and OPEN

Melinda had been in Hogsmeade since early that morning. Sweet Nothings’ stall wouldn’t open until noon, but until then she had kept the large table in front of the stall brimming with pastries, tea, and coffee for the volunteers who were working hard on getting everything ready. As the volunteers’ work started changing from setting up to making sure things were ready, Melinda started setting up the assortment of cakes for the guests today.

This was her third year doing this, her third year offering slices of layer cakes, cups of tea or coffee, and glasses of pumpkin juice and various lemonades at prices that only just covered the prices of the ingredients, while the shop back in Monument Alley was only open for those picking up previously made orders. It was a small thing, she knew that, but this and donating to charities was what she knew how to do; her way of atoning. She hadn’t stayed, rather when the war had started she had fled, hid in the Muggle world, only returning once the war had ended to help rebuilding by doing what she did best: making cakes and desserts.

Standing in the stall, she was happy to have Bryn there with her. They didn’t talk a whole lot, just a comfortable presence as they served the people who stopped by. She knew that somewhere out there, Oliver was either walking around or preparing for the show-off the Quidditch players had agreed to do, and that made her nervous. On the other hand, Viktor had said that he would be there with the children which excited her, it made her smile and at the same time feel both anxious to see him and hesitant, because she wasn’t sure if he – or she – was ready for the world to see…

So she did what she did best; enjoyed the customers stopping by, greeting them with a smile and a “Hello, how may I help you?”

Roger wandered around the Victis Honor Day celebrations with an oddly heady mix of sadness and nostalgia, overlaid with more pedestrian feelings of contentment. The day was nice, and though Marcus wasn't here with him, he still enjoyed the feeling of being in a chattering crowd.

Having watched the winged horses for a while, his stomach suddenly began to inform him that he hadn't actually eaten since the night before, and that only the injection of food would mollify it. Vaguely, he remembered that Mel was going to be doing her usual stall filled with delicious food, and headed towards where it had been before. He caught her eye as he approached and waved happily. "Hello stranger," he called genially. "Care to feed a poor starving Quidditch player then?" He approached the stand and carelessly walked behind it to give her a hug. "What's new?"

Of course, there were other Quidditch players out and about today, and though she had feelings for this particular Quidditch player, they weren’t the same as for Viktor and Oliver. Almost immediately she felt her shoulders relax – she hadn’t been aware that she had been tense until now – and her smile brighten significantly.

“Poor?” she laughed as Roger casually strolled into her stand. “Never associated ‘poor’ with you, my dear,” and without hesitation or reservation she hugged him back. Smiling up at him, she shrugged and gestured to the only cooler that didn’t hold cake or lemonade. “Bryn’s made some sandwiches, please help yourself, and I had a date. What’s new with you? No Marcus today?”
