Eddie and Open

Hands shoved into pockets, Eddie made his way across the Hogwarts grounds, glad to get lost in the crowd. It was a pretty good way to return back to the UK, especially since he still felt a bit like hiding.

It had been months. He hadn't answered any owls except the ones from his sister (whose were often howlers, thanks just what he needed when on a mission) and Rose, who was kinder than she should have been. Even his friends he ignored, though most of them were well used to it and figured Eddie would answer when Eddie would answer. He felt bad about that, honestly. He was a fuck up, sure, but generally he wasn't a jerk. What had made him run off all over the globe chasing his own demons? A ridiculously attractive girl who made him feel things. A sphinx? He could conquer those no problem. Riddles that look into your soul? No problem. He made short work of complex curses and battled reanimated corpses like it was something done in his sleep, but human emotions terrified him. At least, this human emotion had.

And then, suddenly, he didn't want to be far from her anymore. Even if she hated him, which, to be frank, he wouldn't blame her for doing. So now he was back, and maybe she would hex him into a thousand pieces but by god he wanted to see her again.

So he was at Hogwarts at Victis Honor day.

He saw a familiar face and smiled a crooked smile as he jogged to say hello and welcome either a warm greeting or a lecture, either of which would be appropriate, really.

Eddie and Rose and Open

Ant was growing like a weed, but even though he at three months had grown long legs, huge paws and reached a height slightly above Rose’s knee, he was still that little squirming wiggle she had kept warm after she had found him that February morning. She had him on a leash, which at first had been a bit of a hassle, but he had gotten better. Sure, he bounced a little from time to time, but mostly he stayed almost next to her. Mostly. Sometimes. But he really didn’t pull all that much on the leash.

Honor Victis Day didn’t mean a whole lot to her. Sure, she had been trapped in the castle along with the other students and she had seen and experienced her share of punishment for breaking the rules. But when the time had come, she had been too young and before the battle had started she had been sent away to a holding place and from there shipped off to Romania. She come along today, though – her first time there – because Rolf was there with a small menagerie of animals, and as he was tending to them, she was walking around with Ant, looking at everything, looking at the people and taking in their reactions to what was going on.

And then there he was. She had heard from him quite a bit, but that just didn’t measure up to actually seeing him, and with a grin, she set off at a run – Ant happily bouncing along next to her – before she made a small jump and wrapped her arms around Eddie’s neck. “Git!” she laughed as she hugged him close. “I didn’t think I’d see you anytime soon!”

Eddie took one look at the overgrown puppy loping along with his friend and laughed loudly, even as he caught Rosie in his arms. "Ooof!" he cried, his breath leaving him from her extra rough hug, "That's MISTER Git to you!" He tugged on her hair a bit before setting her down and running a hand through his own shaggy mane. "I figured it would be better to surprise you. Surprise! How much did you miss me?" he asked, before dropping to his knees to ruffle the dog's fur.

"You weren't kidding, he IS a monster. This is a puppy? He'll be bigger than you are," he teased, flopping on his back so the puppy could roll around with him. That he was tangling her leash Eddie cared very little. Once he was covered in grass and dog hair, he stood up, nearly breathless from stimulation. "Guess who is going to be helping the team before your training completion. I'll give you three guesses and one of them should be me. It's me!"

”Ooh, someone went and got himself a swollen ego!” Rose grinned into Eddie’s shoulder before he set her back down. When Eddie had first requested to be sent off on a mission separate from the rest of their team, Rose had understood. Eddie was restless and his need to travel wasn’t being satisfied by the intricate work on the vault here in London. But when she learned about what had happened with him and Susan, she had given him her not just a piece of her mind, but as close to a Howler as a letter could be… and then she had started asking him about his mission, telling about the vault, an just catching him up on things back here. “How much did I miss you? Depends on whether you brought back anything for me.”

“He’s a wiggle,” Rose corrected him, because referring to Ant as a ‘puppy’ just seemed wrong on so many levels. “But yeah,” as Eddie dropped down to play with Ant she couldn’t help but laugh, “he was three months a couple of days ago.” Holy Helga, she was going to have a hard time getting Ant calmed down if Eddie kept this up. Then again, it seemed that Eddie actually had the patience to let Ant get it all out, and the wiggle was almost as calm as he had been before when Eddie stood back up. And her mood only brightened even more when he confirmed that he would be her for the last part of her training. “It’s going to be brilliant. You staying until the vault’s secured or just to the end of my training?”

"My ego is half my charm," Eddie joked, his grin going even more crooked. This was what he missed most about having good friends around. That, and not sleeping in a tent, even if that tent was pretty nice. He waggled his eyebrows at her when she mentioned bringing something back for her, and put a hand to his lips. "Hmmm...let me see...did I bring anything back for you...." He made a show of hemming and hawing before he reached into his back pocket and pulled out a small leather pouch, inside of which was the necklace he had gotten for her in Turkey. He had rolled his eyes. "Sad to see my absence was only sadly noted if I came bearing gifts but thankfully I know you well."

He tussled with the puppy for a moment, who had calmed down a bit after their exertions. "Three months, huh? Can't imagine what he'll look like in three more," he said, shaking his head before turning his attention back to his friend. "Both," he said, smiling at her. "And maybe longer, depending." Depending, of course, if he could win back Susan. Not that he ever really had her, he supposed. "So, how have you been Rosie?"

”Yeah, well, as much as I love the assignment at the bank, there’s no travelling which means no excuse to buy rings or boots, so of course I’m expecting you to sate my need for gifts!” Rose grinned and almost bounced when Eddie finally handed her the small leather pouch. Truth be told, she hadn’t expected him to bring her back anything, though it was one of the things they shared: something bordering on compulsion to buy things when they were outside the country. Gently she poured the contents of the pouch into the palm of her hand. “Oh, Eddie,” she breathed as she picked up the necklace. “It’s beautiful! Thank you, so much!” And it would go perfectly with the ring she had bought when she had been in Israel on one of her first assignments.

Crouching down in front of Ant, she ruffled his neck and let him lick her nose. “He’s going to be a beautiful boy, aren’t you, big boy?” she cooed, giggling as he licked her nose, though all too soon he got carried away and ran his tongue from her chin to her forehead. “Alright alright alright, enough of that,” she said as she pulled back when he looked ready to do it again. A brush of her sleeve over her face followed by a Charm to cleanse her face, and she was good to go again.

“Been good,” she told him and nudged him with her shoulder so they could start walking. “Even without the travelling the assignment at the bank is amazing. So many layers of every Curse and Jinx and Ward you can think of, and then some, and I have to admit that it’s been perfect being able to go back home to Rolf all this time.” Of course, it had also meant that her parents had had an easier time of harassing her team leader with Owls to draw Rose’s integrity into question. The closer her final tests came the more intense their mission seemed to have gotten. “How about you?” She knew she was about to walk out on thin ice. “Have you seen her yet?”
