RP: Dinner and getting to know each other
Who: Viktor and Melinda

What: Dinner out with Melinda

Where: Black Sea Restaurant, London (Bulgarian Restaurant)

When: [backdated a couple hours] Tuesday April 29, night

Rating: SFW for now at least

Viktor did not mind that their dinner was sooner than he had initially expected. In fact, it pleased him greatly that she wanted to make sure they had dinner before things got rather busy with all the memorials and the busyness that surrounded them.

He had met her at the appointed time, dressed nice but not fancy, his attire Muggle. He’d kissed her hand. He was relatively certain she knew this was a date, but that hint should definitely help too. He very much liked this kind woman and this opportunity to get to spend some time with just her was something he was very pleased with.

He’d apparated them to an alcove near one of his favorite restaurants. At least, it was one of his favorites when his mother wasn’t around to cook. He hoped she did not mind ethnic food, but he would offer her the choice of going elsewhere. He already had a couple of backups in mind.

“This,” he said as heput a hand on the small of her back to lead her to the door, “is one of the best Bulgarian restaurants in London. The owners are friends of mine. The vife of the owner, she is some sort of distant cousin to my father, I think. Ve haff never figured it out. But if it is not to your taste, I know several other nice places ve can go.”

The rest of the day had passed by as if in a bit of a blur and yet it seemed as if it had taken forever before she could close up Sweet Nothings and get everything cleaned up. Finally it had been time for Melinda to head upstairs, and though she was eager to get going, she had taken her time getting ready. At 7:30 pm sharp, she went downstairs, dressed in a dress that would be fitting for just about any place they could go, be it Muggle or Magic. At first, Viktor’s kiss to her hand had made her pause, just for a moment, but then her smile had been accompanied by a faint blush in her cheeks and a sense of relief that apparently she hadn’t been reading too much into this.

She had slipped her hand into the crook of his elbow as they walked down the street towards the restaurant in an area that she didn’t recognize. “Other than banitsa, I don’t think I’ve ever had Bulgarian food,” Melinda smiled up at him, “so I don’t know if it’s to my taste. Why don’t we find out?” By no means was Melinda a picky eater and she had always loved trying new foods, especially savoury foods, since they were still a bit of a wonder to her. Besides, Viktor obviously liked this place, and that was about the best recommendation she could get.

Following him inside, she waited until they were seated before she looked to him. “I’m glad you could make it on such short notice. You come here often?”

She was very beautiful, he thought. The dress flattered her immensely. For a moment he felt that feeling, like when he was younger -- that nervousness, that she could see something in him, such an awkward person; that he didn't have the words to express things, or show it.

"Certainly, and if it is not, ve shall get you something else." It was a gamble, he supposed. Some people wouldn't like it. But it was a lot of what he'd grown up on, and he knew the owners, so that always helped as well. He led her inside, smiling at the hostess and exchanging a few easy words in Bulgarian and then English before they were seated.

"Not as often as one vould think, but it is one of my more favorite places," he said. "At least, vhen I am craving a piece of home and cannot make it myself." Or his mother was away, as she had been frequently lately. Amiri was a good cook, but some things you had to grow up learning. Hers was never quiiiiite like his mother's or the cooks' here.

Melinda did see something in Viktor. She saw a devoted father with ambitions that allowed him to do what he supposedly loved for a living. She saw a kind man, a gentleman, who in spite of his privacy still had allowed her into his and his children’s lives. But mainly, she saw a man who made her feel at ease, made her feel good about herself and who made her want to know him better. She saw a man that made her stomach feel funny and an attraction to that even though it scared her made her want to go with it.

“If the smell is anything to go by, I doubt we’ll have to do that,” she assured him with a smile and picked up her menu. Melinda could feel her mouth water slightly as she glanced through the menu. “It all looks delicious,” she told him honestly. “Robust, but delicious. I don’t think it’ll be the taste that’ll be the problem, more likely it’ll be whether or not I can eat it all.” She looked up at him with a chuckle.

“It’s nice to have someone cook for you,” she agree. Of course, if she was eating anything other than sandwiches or salads it was because she had either ordered it or someone else had cooked for her, but it was a rare occasion when someone baked for her, and that made it all the more special for her. “Is there anything you’d recommend in particular? And keep in mind, I’m not picky, at all.”

Viktor's grin was quick and not quite wicked, though there was definitely a hint of mischief. "That, my dear, is vhy to go boxes were invented," he said. He had definitely done that more than once, himself. He tended to watch quite closely what he ate and how much of it, not out of vanity but for his profession. He could cheat every now and again, like he would be tonight, but he'd also keep an eye on it and bring extra home, if he had any, for an extra meal later on. It was the price of being an athlete, but generally one he didn't mind paying too much.

"Ah, there is so much!" he prevaricated for a moment, trying to decide on a few good recommendations. "If you vant to start vith soup, the bob chorba is excellent, especially here." He named a couple of soups, a kebab, a few other things they could start with, giving short explanations of each of them. His accent was perhaps a little more pronounced here, though he was still understandable.

“Ahh,” Melinda smiled at Viktor’s teasing. ”I like this place already.” Not just because it meant that she would most likely have lunch for tomorrow, but because of the atmosphere here, the smells, the chattering in the background, and mostly… because of the way Viktor appeared to relax here.

Melinda read along in the menu as Viktor explained. Though she could read what it said, his descriptions of the various dishes were more thorough and she actually had an idea about what she was ordering when she put her menu down. “The bob chorba,” she said with a nod having made her decision. “I keep coming back to that one and it just sounds so delicious.”

"Excellent," Viktor said, and decided to have the same. He was able to grab the attention of a server with just a small move; someone had likely been waiting. He was a familiar enough fixture here, known not so much for his wizarding reputation, for there were only a few magicals who really came through here, but through the many times he'd been here with family and without, and for the things he did subtly in the Muggle world, sometimes with help of people like those here.

"I vill have the same," he said. He raised his eyebrows in inquiry if he could order for her. Once orders were placed, he smiled at her, hands comfortably clasped in front of him. "So vhat are you regular favorite foods, ven someone is not stealing you away to a new ethnic restaurant?" he asked.

With a small nod, Melinda let Viktor know that she was fine with letting him order for her. Generally she didn’t have a problem with that, it only became a problem to her if whoever ordered didn’t take her tastes into consideration or had a very good reason for doing so. She watched, intrigued by the way his lips and tongue so easily formed the words and sounds so foreign to her, as he ordered, and returned his smile when he looked back at her.

Unconsciously she mirrored his pose; her hand resting comfortably on the table in front of her. “Mmm,” she chuckled. “I love seafood, but I don’t count fish’n’chips as seafood. Nothing wrong with it, I love it at the right times, but the lightness of fish and shellfish in particular that I just can’t resist. Other than that, there’s a Lebanese restaurant just down the street from Diagon Alley that makes the most amazing food. But I love just about any kind of food, though generally on the lighter side, since I’m surrounded by heavy creams and sugar all day long.”

It was nice in many ways to be able to order in his native tongue, or at least one of the two languages he'd grown up speaking. The server seemed to enjoy it as much as he, though the man's English was decent. He smiled and finished ordering with a cordial thank you.

"Ah, so not the 'traditional' fish and chips," he said with a nod. That was what he'd been told the first time he'd visited this country, anyway, back when his English had been very rough. "I haff always liked the shellfish, yes. Lobster and such." And the butter sauces were divine, if more than he should eat most days. He nodded again. "I can see vhy you prefer it, da. I tend to eat very, hm, healthy? As I should to keep my job. But I like to indulge sometimes." Not that having a toddler and running around chasing him all day wouldn't wear off almost any meal.
