Lunch and gossip
Who: Susan and Ernie, open

What: Lunch

Where: Starting out at St Mungo's, eventually Finnigan's, the common room

When: Tuesday, early afternoon

Rating: SFW

</ljcut>

After a tedious morning spent at her desk filling out paperwork and using the words 'parallel' and 'gazelle' so many times that they ceased to have any meaning to her, Susan had had enough. She was hungry, and in dire need of a pick me up, and knew exactly the person she needed to see. Shrugging on her coat, she strolled down to the atrium, and with a furtive look around her, took the floo to St Mungo's.

The hospital was bedlam, as per usual. However, with a shameless flash of her credentials she passed the lines and headed up to the Janus Thickey Ward on the fourth floor. When she got there, she found Ernie industriously scribbling in a patient's notes. "Hey stranger," she said with a smile as he looked up at her in surprise. "I thought I'd drag you away and buy you some lunch, interested?"

He smiled, the sight of one of his friends always welcome. The day hadn't been particularly harsh - it tended to be more easygoing in a ward whose patients were there long-term - and thus it was often easier to take time for a proper meal.

"How can I refuse? Just give me a moment to finish this up and I'm all yours." He completed the patient record and handed it over to his co-worker with whom he staggered his breaks, then after exchanging a few words, he moved to slide off his lime green healer's robes.

"So, where to today? I'm famished - you have perfect timing, you know. Could you hear my stomach grumbling all the way to the Ministry?"

"You can't," Susan retorted with a smile as she watched Ernie finish off his notes. Looking around casually as he chatted quietly with his co-worker and slipped off his healer's robes.

"I thought we'd head over to Finnigan's, it'll be quiet and we can give Seamus or Dean something to do," she said, linking her arms with his. "Also, I did in fact hear your stomach at the Ministry, we thought something had gone wrong down in Mysteries again!"

"I think I can handle that, bring a little sunshine to their day."

Ernie took her arm and gladly walked with her out of St. Mungo's. It was a lovely day at least, and he was glad he'd worn a short-sleeved shirt along with his khaki trousers.

"So how was work? I don't have to heal you again yet, do I?"

Susan ruefully glanced over at Ernie's short-sleeved shirt, then down at her coat. It was a tad warm, but much better than letting Ernie see the harmless spell-grazes on her arms.

"Ha, work is fine. I didn't get hurt this time, although one of my team got turned into a gazelle and the other got caught in a recursive-loop hex, but they're both fine. I'm just glad we took the nutters out," she said with a sigh. "How about you, anything interesting your end?"

"Oh, nothing big. When you see the same patients in and out there isn't really much to tell, not that I could tell much if there were," he added with a wink.

He held the door to Finnigan's open for her and followed her inside, allowing her to choose whatever table or booth she wanted.

"I'm dying for some irish stew, and it's a shame I'm working else I'd have an ale too. What're you having?"

Susan snorted indelicately and punched Ernie good-naturedly on the arm. "I don't know what it says about the Ministry that I can tell you more hush-hush goings on in the MLE than you can tell me about St Mungo's - it's a bit worrying really."

Susan grinned impishly as Ernie held the door open, and headed for a big table in the corner, plonking herself down with a contended sigh.

"You're always dying for Irish stew. Or an Irishman - although not as much as our mutual friend is dying for a particular Irishman," she said with a lascivious wink. "I think I'll have the Irish stew too, and also the chips, because being hexed at makes me hungry."

Leaning back against her chair, Susan forced herself to relax and focused on not maintaining lines of sight and discerning control points and defensible positions throughout the room. To distract herself, she looked at Ernie. "So, any strapping young lads on the... what do Muggles say again? Sonar? Do you have any strapping young lad's on the sonar, Ernie?"

"Our mutual friend keeps insisting there's nothing between him and said Irishman, so I've been wondering if maybe we should fix one of them up. At least they'll get a shag out of the deal. I'd do it myself, except I'm no homewrecker," he added with a cheeky grin.

Ernie knew Susan tended to be on guard much of the time - it was one of the hazards of being an auror - so it was nice when she could relax. He worried about what the stress of the job did to her, both as a friend and as her healer. "Unfortunately, nothing on the sonar," he replied with a shake of his head. "But then between work and here, I haven't had much chance to meet anyone. I don't know, maybe I should ask Dominic if he'd be up to a friends with benefits sort of thing, just to 'relieve a bit of tension'. What about you? Your sonar picking up anything interesting?"

Susan sighed, and fiddled with her sleeves. "I know I meddle too much, but they just really need to make up their damn minds. I suppose we could set one or both of them up with someone? Although you know how Seamus gets... Maybe he would be comfortable getting buff with you? It wouldn't be the first time," she teased gently.

Susan pursed her lips and looked at Ernie intently. "You do need to get your shag on Ernie dear, and Merlin knows Dominic is more than, uh, up for the job shall we say," she said with a saucy laugh. "Unfortunately for me, the girl from Wizengamot admin decided that sleeping with an Auror was nowhere near as glamorous as she thought. What I need is a nice bloke to sort me out I think."

"Well, some people need a little meddling," he teased, "but yeah, I do think that they deserve to be happy, together or not. You never know, sometimes absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that shite." He paused. "Oh no, I know I've seen Seamus in the buff and all, but I can't see myself having more than a fun shag with him, and I think he's looking for more than that. I'll have to keep my eyes out for someone, though, and if I find one, you'll be the first to know."

He nodded in agreement. He was (one of) the first to tell people they needed a healthy sex life, though taking his own advice was sometimes harder said than done. "I know, I know. Maybe I'll owl him later, see if he'd be up for it - and for me," he joked with a wink. "Wait, she did? What a little- she doesn't know what she's missing, you're fabulous and I'd shag you if I ever decided that shagging women was appealing. A nice bloke could help, though be careful of the macho ones as they won't necessarily be comfortable enough in their manhood to get with an auror who can kick their arse."

She nodded sagely. "Seamus does need more than a good shag. He needs someone to love him, and hug him, and make him realise that scars are nothing to be ashamed of." She made a face, thinking of how deeply self-conscious Seamus was of his scars, and how no amount of declarations from Susan - who sported a rather impressive scar shaped like a sunburst on her thigh, and another like an arrow head on her abdomen - could convince him otherwise.

Susan smiled, glad that Ernie was going to get a bit of action, because there was no way that Dominic would turn down the opportunity to get himself a bit of tail. "She did indeed cut things off, but don't worry Ern I'm a big girl and have been dumped before," she said with a slight sigh, remembering the past. "Also, uh, thank you for the compliment, I think? But yes, a nice Auror-friendly man is definitely something I'd like to get a hold of."

"Seamus is also not the casual type either, from what I've seen, and not just because of the scars. Some people would just rather be in relationships, while others like you and I don't mind the occasional fun times in between."

Ernie's face turned sympathetic at the reminder of Susan's past. "Maybe you've been dumped before, but it doesn't mean it's easy or that they're arses for doing it. And yes, it was a compliment - there are very few women I'd ever say that about, honestly. So, we need to find you a bloke - or a bird, don't completely count them out - who is brilliant enough to like you for who you are. And of course that you think is fit."

The waiter came by then to take their orders, and Ernie's stomach already began to growl as he said he'd like some irish stew.

"Oh Seamus is definitely the type of lad who needs a good steady relationship. I don't think he could enjoy 'occasional fun times' if his life depended on it," she said with great fondness.

"Oh don't worry Ernie dear, I'm not discounting the ladies," she said, casually watching a tall brunette walk towards the corner. "But a nice, brilliant, fit, slightly moody bloke would definitely hit the spot right now. Or a Quidditch player. Or a nice, brilliant, fit, slightly moody Quidditch player."

In a fit of pique, Susan ordered the bunny burger with a side of chips - mostly on the basis that the last time she'd seen her brother he'd recommended it.

"So, I haven't told you the real news yet, have I?"

Ernie's ears perked up when she said real news. "Oh, so you've an ulterior motive to dragging me out to lunch, then," he teased. "All right, let me guess, the head auror is retiring and you're taking his place?" It wasn't likely, of course, and he was in part teasing, but if it were true, Susan would most definitely deserve it.

Susan grinned impudently at her friend, relishing the opportunity to drag out her answer as long as possible. "Nope, the head Auror is still definitely alive and kicking - last time I looked anyway. Nope, I'm in the running to be moved onto a special task force to take down serious dark wizards, well at least I hope I still am - a gazelle and a llama not withstanding."

"That's brilliant! You're brilliant, and it's nice to see they recognize that too." He did, however, lift his hand to wag his finger at her. "Now, I'd better not be seeing more injuries out of you, young lady. You'll have a partner, right? Someone to watch your back and you watch theirs?"

"Thank you darling! I thought you'd like it," she said with a beatific grin. She'd worked extremely hard, and made it through a slew of questionable occurrences to get to this point, and she rather enjoyed how happy Ernie was for her.

She rolled her eyes at his question. "I will have a partner yes, no idea who it'll be, but there will be someone 'watching my back' or more, if they're lucky."

"Oh?" He couldn't help adding a little waggle to his eyebrows. "Watching your back or more. And here I thought we were going to find you a fit quidditch player when all along you had designs on a new partner at work." He grinned to let her know he was kidding, then smiled up at the server as their meals arrived.

"But seriously," he said after his first bite of stew, "I know how much you love your work, and how good you are at it. They couldn't choose a better person. As long as you keep coming home to us, then I'm behind you 100%. So other than a partner, what else will the position mean for you? Better pay? Better or worse hours? Any changes I should know about?"

Susan laughed, pausing the conversation as the waiter brought them their food. "I was only joking - well, half joking. I actually don't know who I'm getting partnered with, they haven't told me yet, so I could want them to watch my back or more, but for now I would still like a nice bloke and a good shag."

She reached across and patted his hand warmly. "I'll definitely keep coming home, so far as I can possibly make it," she said with a hint of steel in her voice. "But the new job means more field work and less paperwork, as well as more 'operational control and discretion'," she added, taking a bite of her burger - which was very good.

"So do you have any news for me, dear? Reconnected with anyone lately? Anyone you hadn't seen in a while?"

He nodded - he would definitely keep his eyes out for someone she'd like, and more importantly, would be worthy of her. "More control and less paperwork is always good. That's one of the things I hate most about being in a long-term ward - I think we've got the most paperwork of all."

He paused as he was about to take a bite. Okay, now that sounded rather specific. "Not particularly, but you sound like you've something on your mind. Come on, out with it. It's not like you beat around the bush with me. I'm a big boy, I can take it," he added with a wink.

She watched the cogs begin to whir behind Ernie's eyes, as he began to think through possible people to set her up with. Unlike some of her other friends, Ernie's taste was usually excellent, and she'd gotten more than one good shag out of the blind dates he'd set her up on over the years. "I can only imagine how much paperwork they must saddle the healers with in your ward," she said with vast distaste.

She smiled at him in much the same way as a pregnant woman guarding the sex of her unborn child. "Huh," she said after a moment. "It's really nothing. I saw you chatting to whats his name, Nott? Last night? Any uh, bush beating going on there?"

Oh, Ernie should have known better - beware when Susan smiled in that special way of hers because it meant danger. The moment she mentioned Theodore, his face flushed bright red. He looked around, making sure there wasn't anybody close enough to hear as he pushed a stray lock of blond hair behind his ear. Anyone who knew Ernie would know this wasn't quite a typical reaction for him.

"So, you saw that. He's cute, yeah, but... it's complicated."

Susan grinned impishly at her friend, watching him flush red and fiddle nervously with his hair as though the object of his crush could miraculously see him. Nothing worked quite as well at distracting Ernie as a crush. It'd always been like this at school, from the moment she'd cottoned onto the fact that they walked past the older Quidditch players in the courtyards three, four, or even five times more than was necessary.

"Relax, darling! I just thought I'd ask what was going on. I definitely wouldn't dream of interfering," she paused as he snorted. "Without At least some sort of indication that interference would be welcomed."

Unbeknownst to Susan, his 'crush' wasn't the only reason why he was self-conscious about who was listening. He was glad, however, that he had her to talk to about it all.

"No, it's fine, it's just that as I said, it's complicated. As in I don't just know him from Hogwarts, but from work." His look spoke volumes. "And I don't think he remembers much of it, which isn't unusual but it does make it harder to figure out where my ethical boundaries are."

She felt her eyebrows lift heavenward in surprise. "Oh wow Ern, I had no idea. I'll definitely leave well enough alone though," she said, giving him a thoughtful look. "In terms of ethics though, as long as you don't force anything on him, I don't see that your actions could be construed as untoward. It's not like you're ah, working with him now." She paused to push away her empty plate. "Besides, you're already miles ahead in that regard. I know enough a couple of people who have at least tried to show their appreciation to their healers quite explicitly."

He nodded, knowing how true it was that some people developed infatuations with their healers, and sometimes vice-versa. "What's in my favour is that I was only a trainee at the time and was never his healer in any way. It's more that I know about his time there and he doesn't seem to remember, and he's probably perfectly happy not remembering because, well, I can't talk about some of the stuff that went on but it wasn't very pleasant. And, well, you know how I am and how I want to just heal everybody. Am I someone's friend or their healer? What if I can't tell where the line is?"

She nodded sagely - the war had been a terrible thing, and few had escaped it unscathed. While she didn't really remember Nott, she thought of her father, and the various colleagues she knew who'd spent time in Ernie's ward, and felt a swell of camaraderie for the man. "It's probably best," she murmured after a moment. "To let sleeping dragons lie in that regard I think? If he doesn't bring it up, then don't worry about it." She smiled at the slightly stricken look on Ernie's face, and patted his arm affectionately. "You can be both, dear. Sometimes to heal you need to be a friend, and sometimes a friend needs to be a healer. You shouldn't worry yourself about it, you are who you are."

She pulled out her watch and grimaced. "And what we are, is about to be late to head back for work."

"Oh shite," he muttered, then immediately broke out his change purse and took out several galleons, more than enough to cover both meals and a tip for the server.

"You give great advice, as always," he said, rising up from his seat and reaching out for a hug and a kiss to her cheek. "I'll see you Sunday for Dean's party."
