"Oh sweet Merlin's balls that was horrible. I mean, I know our choices are pretty limited but I have definitely seen better fluffy teen girl films," Dean groused as he and Seamus exited the cinema.

They had been intending to go and see Robots but due to delays on Dean's part and some confusion about the actual film time (Dean had mis-calculated how long the adverts would be) they had missed the start of the film and decided to plump for the other option that was pretty much guaranteed to be Dean-safe. Ice Princess had been completely Dean safe... and sadly sub-par.

The whole rush at the start had meant no time for talking, just some rapid travel and some running. "So then," Dean said, looking pointedly at Seamus. "How was the date?" It had been a while since he'd got to pester Seamus about dates since whatever was going on with Justin didn't count. Or it never had as far as Seamus told him.

"What?" Seamus asked, feigning shock. "You don't know what you're talking about, Thomas!" Having grown up in a house with no electricity and, thus, no television, he had always been more easily pleased by their cinema trips. Add to that an anxiety after the war that Dean would feel bad about their limiting their selection on his account, and Seamus had taken up the habit of giving a glowing review to just about everything. It was almost a challenge - the worse the film, the harder he had to try to get Dean to crack a smile and admit that, okay, maybe there'd been one good thing, even if it was just a hot male lead. "Romance, betrayal, dance numbers, short skirts!" Seamus took a step out ahead of Dean and attempted a graceful pirouette - which was neither graceful, nor a pirouette by any strict technical definition.

After dodging the little old woman he'd nearly knocked into, Seamus returned to Dean's side, laughing as he took his arm. "It was good," he said, actually sounding certain of the fact for once. "Met some of his friends, had a couple of drinks, danced." They hadn't gone home together. Martin hadn't pushed for it, and Seamus had been having enough of a good time that he wanted to see if he could swing a second date.

"Dude, the people in the short skirts were almost all about fifteen or younger, which makes me feel like a pervert for even considering it. The plot was pretty predictable and it didn't make up for it with spectacular acting or anything fun like that!" He had been fairly impressed by the actual ice skating, but he wasn't going to be admitting that just yet. It was only a small consolation and he was used to Seamus' little game by now and couldn't give him the satisfaction just yet. Then Seamus tried to do some sort of twirl which didn't really work and nearly ended up with either Seamus or an elderly woman on the floor. Dean winced and snorted slightly. "Oops," he said lightly, teasing him.

Walking together they dodged other people easily enough by both practice and the fact the two of them arm-in-arm were enough of an obstacle to make people dodge around them rather than the other way around. "Yeah? That's good," Dean said, forcing himself to sound more enthusiastic and ignoring the want to examine why he wasn't happier for his friend. "You going to see him again?" he asked, ignoring the vague unease in his stomach by nudging Seamus' side slightly.

Seamus just laughed, safe in the knowledge that he hadn't been looking at any of the people in the short skirts. "Whoops," he agreed. "But she was applying for university - doesn't that make her 17? 18?" He'd almost said 'doesn't that make her Jess's age', but had caught himself just in time. "Come on," he wheedled. "It was good!" Granted, it had been obvious from the start how it would end - including the romantic relationship - but there had been some turns Seamus hadn't expected, and the two adults hadn't been that badly acted. "The guys were a disappointment, though. I wouldn't have found them hot even at fifteen."

After a moment of consideration, Seamus nodded. "Yeah. I think so. I gave him Graeme's mobile number." He made a slight face at that. His brother was 'okay' with Seamus's sexuality, but he didn't exactly want to be involved. Still, he was one of about two people Seamus knew who had mobiles, and the idea of giving over Dean's number had felt weird for the brief moment that he'd considered it. "Guess I have to wait and see if he calls." He smiled, leaning against Dean a little as they slowed to let a group of young women pass them. "I hope he does. It felt good, even if it was just because it sort of - closed things with Justin." He hadn't spoken much about it, to anyone really, but Justin's sudden disappearance from his life had left him feeling weirdly dispirited. Not hurt, exactly, but... He shook his head, deciding not to think about it.

Dean made a face, the extra two or three years still didn't help. "And that really doesn't make it any better," he responded, shuddering theatrically. "The idea of it still makes me feel like a pervert. They're younger than Jess!" He snorted at Seamus' assessment of the guys, at fifteen he'd been far more wrapped up in the possibility of girls than of guys.

"Yeah?" What he thought next was That's great! but what came out was. "That's good. Encouraging, even if you have to get messages passed on." He stopped talking because he felt like he was forcing himself to be jollier than he should be and he couldn't figure out why. "That sucks, the Justin thing I mean. I know it wasn't quite a thing, but, you know, it was fun and stuff. Plus I'm less likely to walk in on you wanking when you're getting some, which I appreciate," he said, grinning and winking. It didn't happen often as such, just enough that it was definitely a running joke of sorts.

"Okay," Seamus said, with an easy shrug. "Not the short skirts. But come on! When the coach gave the girl the new skates, and they ruined her performance?!" The fact that he couldn't remember the girl's name, mere minutes after leaving the cinema didn't speak too highly of the film, but he was not going to give up. "Don't tell me you saw it coming because I won't believe you." He was pretty certain neither of them knew enough about skating to have predicted that twist anyway. "And the popular girl wasn't nearly as mean as they usually are." He added, speaking as someone who had seen entirely too many movies marketed towards teen girls, for one reason and another.

"It was fun and stuff," he agreed, but his tone was far from enthusiastic. No matter how fun, the fact that his relationships - speaking generally - always seemed to end the same way made him wonder if it was even worth it. He grimaced slightly at Dean's wink. "Maybe you'd better start knocking again then," he counselled, trying to sound light-hearted about it. When Dean did walk in on him, it tended to be during that frustrating period where he was getting enough attention to excite his libido but hadn't yet faced the difficult prospect of actually getting his kit off in front of someone new. "Home?" he suggested, more cheerfully, as they reached quieter streets.

"Dude, you have to break skates in. It's like new shoes, but no I wasn't totally expecting it," Dean said. He knew about breaking in new shoes. No so much for himself, but all the women in his family had complained about it at one point or another. Apparently this was especially important with heels. Not that he'd know. He shrugged about the popular girl. "The popular girls are always somewhat annoying." He paused, glanced at Seamus and smiled. "I'll admit that the skating was very impressive. I assume most of the impressive stuff was stunt doubles, but it still looked really good." That sort of athletic endeavour was always impressive to him. His athletic talents had never been in that area or anything like it.

"I'll just put the damn curtains back up around your bed. It's not like you actually close the door half the time though, so why I ever think the curtains will work I don't know," he said, muttering partly to himself. They'd been catching each other since Hogwarts, he only escaped the same treatment because generally he invaded Seamus' flat not the other way around.

"Get food on the way?" he suggested. Sure they'd had popcorn and drinks but he usually got bored part way through the bag and he hadn't had a bit lunch. Plus the cinema prices were always insane. Seamus almost never had much in and if they went his place it would have to be something out of the freezer. Probably two mis-matched somethings.

Seamus waved away Dean's apparent knowledge of shoes. "But I can still walk in my new shoes," he pointed out. "I don't fall over! They might be uncomfortable, but they don't stop me doing things." Now that he knew, he could see that skates would be different, but he hadn't known to expect it. His mind jumped tracks briefly as he looked down at his own feet. "D'you think I need new shoes?" It had been a while since he'd bought any, and his trainers had taken a pretty brutal scuffing when they'd gone flying. He glanced up at Dean's words, pulling away from his arm to do a celebratory jig. "Yesss!" he crowed. "I knew you'd cave. You always cave." Sometimes, Seamus actually managed to guess the one thing Dean would admit to liking, but even when he didn't Dean eventually fessed up. He stopped dancing to wrap his arms around Dean, grinning into his shoulder before he pulled let go.

He was jostled by someone coming out of the bar he'd inadvertently brought them to a halt outside of, but it didn't dampen his spirits. Some days were just good days, even if all you'd done was watch a not-terrible movie about teenage figure skaters. "I am a grown man," he objected. "Who lives alone, most of the time. I shouldn't have to hang curtains around my bed if I want to have a wank." He wagged a finger at Dean. "The risk of getting an eyeful is just the price you pay for being my very bestest mate in the whole world - don't tell Susan."

His eyes lit up at the mention of food. He'd filled up on sweet popcorn (it had been, he'd insisted, his turn to pick) but now he was craving something hotter and more substantial. "And this is why I keep you around, even though you have an uncanny habit of walking in at the perfect moment to ruin everything." He stuck his tongue out briefly, clearly kidding. Dean knew he was welcome any hour of the day or night. "Burgers?" he suggested. "Or those kebab things with the horrible, dangerous hot chilli sauce you love so much that burns my poor tongue?"

"I've had a 'new shoes are torture' lecture from, I think, all of the women in my family at one point or another. Or at least complaints about not walking too far," he said with a grimace. "But yeah, mine are usually totally fine apart from needing a bit of give in the leather if they're made from it," he said. He assumed that skates were worse because of the small surface you ended up actually moving on. The sudden change of topic didn't surprise him too much, he was far too used to Seamus' brain jumping ahead three steps. He look at Seamus' trainers and pulled a face. "Yeah, maybe. Can't hurt." He couldn't help but grin and shake his head at Seamus' little dance. Honestly going to the cinema often made Seamus a bit giddy and it almost never failed to make Dean smile, and he did so as Seamus effectively smothered him in a hug.

He snorted at Seamus' assessment, knowing full well that almost nobody actually had direct access to Seamus' flat. "Or just the price for not checking myself before walking through an open bedroom door," he said, grinning like an idiot. "And no, I'll keep my mouth shut. I like staying on her good side," he said. Not that he thought Susan would actually hurt him, but she might give them a hurt look, and it wasn't like there was much difference between their friendships, at least not from where he was concerned. Well, not really.

"Yes, yes, I know you love my ability to vaguely make sure we're relatively fed," he said, and stuck his tongue out right back. The temptation to demand his choice of dinner since he'd hadn't got his way with the popcorn, but honestly he fancied a burger right now. And he could always pop home for spicy sauce to taunt Seamus with. "I'll be nice to you, I'm feeling like burgers tonight," he said.

"I never have time to shop," Seamus complained. Not that he particularly liked shopping, but sometimes it was necessary. His birthday was still a ways off, and though his mum would buy him new shoes in an instant if he dropped a hint that it was necessary, he didn't feel right about her paying for them when he didn't need her to. And as convenient as it would be, he didn't want to give her the money and ask her to go shopping for him. He was supposed to be an adult, after all. "And I can't just pop onto Monument Alley to get trainers. Which - why not? Enough people wear that kind of thing, someone could easily start a business just selling on stuff from muggle shops." As soon as the words were out, Seamus laughed. He was always doing this - coming up with ideas for businesses or projects or activities that he simply didn't have time to run. "Sometimes I wish I could be six people at once."

Noticing Dean's smile, Seamus's grin widened. "I do love you," he agreed, "for that and many other things." He looked up and down the other side of the road, hoping to spot somewhere that looked like it would sell them burgers. "Aha!" he cried, pointing at a red neon banner with 'BURGER KING' written across it in big white letters. He grabbed Dean's arm again and pulled him towards the nearest crossing. "That's fine, yeah?" he checked. Though Greencastle was muggle it didn't exactly have outposts of all the big chains - it had a pub and a chippy and a cafe and that was about it. Dean was better informed, and thus pickier, about muggle eateries and so Seamus usually checked with him before deciding where to go.

"You need to take your damn days off. Not that shopping is something you need to do every day off, but, you know, then you'd have the time," he said, gesturing to try and aid his point. The thing with his job was that he could basically take time off whenever he wanted, but it might well impact on his future earnings. Seamus, on the other hand, often seemed convinced that if he left the pub for more than absolutely necessary things. Apparently trainers didn't count. Idiot. "You know that would be helpful. You should sell your ideas to other people. And frankly I'm pretty sure half of the purebloods who don't want to wear wizarding robes but have pretty much no idea of how to interact with muggles would buy the stock up immediately." He was pretty sure Bryony, for example, didn't own any muggle clothing as he'd never seen her in any, although if she wanted to own any was another matter entirely. Not that it was his place to say anything.

He couldn't help but grin at Seamus' declaration, common as it was. He always liked to be reminded of how much his friends cared for him. He looked over to where Seamus was pointing and rolled his eyes. "Yeah, sure, that'll work," he said. There were probably better burger places around but he liked Burger King so it was a decent option, and they might have a special with a spicier sauce going on. And he wasn't feeling all that enthused about a long walk to try and find somewhere better.

“I do!” Seamus insisted as they started to cross the road. “Sometimes. Nearly all the time! Just… sometimes I take them in the pub. Or there’s an activity I have to watch or –“ The problem was that there was almost always something to keep him within the walls of his pub, and convincing himself his time would be better spent elsewhere only really happened if there was someone to go with. He scuffed his trainer against the pavement as they reached the other side of the road. They didn’t quite have holes in, not yet, but he couldn’t remember if he’d got any kind of enchantment on them to keep them in one piece. If not, maybe it was time to add one. “Is that a thing?” he asked. “’Cause I don’t know anyone with lots of capital who’s just waiting for the right idea. Does that even happen?” He’d be happy to give the ideas away, as long as it got them out of his head.

He ducked into the Burger King just as a group of teenagers spilled out onto the street. “You want to eat it here?” he asked, pointing at one of the tables they’d just left. “I can grab us seats and you can get the food. You know what I like.” Seamus had brought muggle money with him, but he’d spent a lot of it on cinema tickets and the popcorn (if he was going to insist on sweet, he figured he could at least pay).

"It really doesn't count!" Dean countered, and he was very decisive about the fact that taking time off in your actual workspace didn't count. Possibly disregarding his tendency to sleep on the sofa in his studio when he was in a particular groove or needed to finish something. "You're the one who actually has a successful business not me!" he said holding his hands up because he had no idea. "Yes, I know the studio sort of counts but you know I only bought into that after I finished my apprenticeship," he said. "You should look into seeing if it's a thing, because it's a great idea and it's not like either of us have the spare time or money to set it up."

Dean shrugged, "Sure we can do," he said, waving Seamus in the direction of the table. He grinned at the suggestion he go and order and waggled his eyebrows. "Yup, spiciest thing I can see," he said, laughing and holding up his hands to show he was joking. "Kidding, kidding, something with cheese and bacon, and don't go mad on the drinks," he said, knowing from long friendship that Seamus would probably eat most of the things on the menu but neither of them really wanted a large drink after they'd been to the cinema. It was what made outings like this easy as well as fun.
