Who: Richard and Genie
Where: France
What: Stepping out
When: Starting after Wingbeats closes Sunday morning
Rating: PG - Adults out after dark  - anything else TBA

It really wasn't that unusual for Rich to be heading out from his flat in time to catch a pub closing. The world was, after all, round. It had all those inconvenient time zones, and night here was day there. It might have been cheating, but he'd simply gone to bed Saturday afternoon. Not only was he well-rested, but he'd had plenty of time to shower, eat, and get dressed for the occasion. The club they were going to was run by an older couple he'd met during the war years. It was down by the docks, but had an eclectic clientele. He hoped Genie would enjoy the music and dancing.

Genie had been a pleasant surprise the other day. Not only was, as she had said, not especially shy, she hadn't hesitated to let him know she'd found him interesting. A pleasant, and a fun surprise. So there was a bit of a smile on his face when he came into Wingbeats not long before closing and took a lean on the bar, ordering a Black and Tan, Newcastle floated on Guinness. He took a swallow, letting the two different beers mingle, then set the glass on the bar and glanced around to see if he could spot his date as well as anybody else he might know there.

Genie planned to finish the end of her shift as quickly as she could without cutting corners. She'd let them know that she wanted to leave right at the end, but she'd cover for someone else next week, and her coworkers had been understanding enough. Genie wasn't one to shirk.

She had a change of clothes from the clinging jeans and shirt she was wearing now, a miniskirt and a flattering tank, for when she went out with Richard. She'd shimmy into that as soon as they were ready to head out.

"Hey there, handsome," she greeted him, appearing out of the lingering patrons with a slightly anticipatory grin. She walked up to him and kissed him boldly. If he'd wanted to hide anything, well, he should have let her know ahead of time.

Rich's smile grew a little wider when Genie appeared out of the late-night patrons. He returned her kiss briefly, but with enthusiasm. "Hello there yourself. Ready to hit the road, or do you need to help clean up and close tonight? We've got time. Marseilles is a one-hop Apparate for me."

He grinned and leaned back against the bar.

"I'm about done with the work stuff but I thought I'd freshen up and change," she told him. "Brought something for dancing in." Her grin was this side of naughty, even if she had danced in the clothes she was in now.

She still wasn't sure what to think about heading all the wayb to Marseilles, to be honest. She'd barely ever left the country and here she was just hopping out with him like it was nothing. But she pushed it out of her mind and hoped getting back would be no issue.

"Just give me five or ten minutes and we can hop on along."

"When you're done here at the bar, just grab your things. I've a little place there you can even grab a quick shower if you'd like." Rich shrugged. "Used it during the war years and just hung on to it so I have a place to sleep when I end up over there but don't want to stay at the parents' townhouse. Mother has this way of catching me before I've had my morning coffee to browbeat me about stepping out with this daughter or that niece of one of her friends. She's an old dear, don't get me wrong, but she will try to play matchmaker... and most of her suggestions have been fairly dreadful. You know how it goes."

"A shower would be great. You probably don't want me smelling of the bar," Genie said with a cheeky grin. "I'll be quick. It won't take but a couple of minutes. Just let me grab my bag and we can go." She chuckled at his description. "Yeah, parents can be rather limiting like that at times," she said, though there were times she still missed her parents. Knowing they were alive, now, well... she just tried not to think aobut it, or about how she shoudl probably seek them out at some point. "One sec." She ducked behind the bar and pulled out a small bag she'd brought, slinging it over her shoulder and just barely stopping herself from hopping over the bar.

Rich offered Genie his arm for a Side Along. Marseilles might be a long reach for some wizards; for him it was just routine, one of his usual first stops on trips to other places. Nowhere near his limits.

The arrived in the usual fashion in a darker corner of a short alley behind a low building. The smell of food still cooking said restaurant, heavy emphesis on fish. And some fresh-baked bread. Not a bad smell, at least as far as Rich was concerned. He often stopped in at the End of the Line for the catch of the day - which really had been caught that day. Salt and sea were on the light breeze out of the south, and the steady sounds of the docks came with it, they were right across the street from the front of the restaurant.

He gave Genie a moment to get her feet under her again. Some people didn't travel as well as he tended to - mostly because he did it all the time. There was a metal door only a few steps away from where they'd arrived. Rich opened it and flicked on a light inside to reveal a tiny efficiency apartment. "Loo is that door over there," he pointed. "Just about enough room in there to change your mind, so I'll wait for you on the sofa. Help yourself to the shower and whatever. Girly stuff is in the bathroom cabinet."

She really did hate Apparition, though it was becoming a more routine part of her life now that they were an active part of the wizarding world. She wrinkled her nose slightly but bore it with equanimity. It wasn't his fault, and it was extremely convenient, no lie there.

Genie gave the air a sniff upon arrival, as automatic as her heart pumping anymore. Fish, not the most enticing smell; but mmm bread. Her fingers stayed gripping his sleeve for a long moment as she made sure her balance wasn't too far off, and then patted the fabric flat, pretending she hadn't done it.

"Thanks," she told him, leaning in to kiss him lightly before taking off to the loo with a jaunty step. "Be back in a few." She made the freshening up process quick, showering and wiggling into her dancing clothes. She did take a moment to primp her hair and redo her make up, fussing over her appearance just a bit. She was somewhere foreign, after all, and she wanted to look good. She liked looking good.

She finally declared herself satisfied. She smiled warmly at him, twirling in her little skirt and top. "Will I pass for tonight's events?" she asked.

"Much more than just pass, luv," Rich replied with a smile. "A right stunner, you are."

He led Genie back out into the alley then turned left toward the front of the building through a scarcely wider lane between the restaurant and another, larger building, which he headed for. There were a number of cars parked out front, but no sign and only a single bulb over a worn-looking door. Taking Genie's hand he opened that door and the sound of the three-piece band, piano, bass, and drums, came out to greet them.

Rich sketched a two-finger salute to the imposingly-sized doorman, who nodded and almost smiled. Rather than looking for a table or heading for the bar, he made straight for the dance floor. It was a bit of showing off, but he used his hold on Genie's hand to start her into a bit of a twirl as he stepped in close to put his arms around her and lead off in time to the music, a little jazzy number, up tempo, but still slow enough to dance arm in arm, making their way around the floor in the company of a surprising number of other couples.

Genie preened. She was, perhaps, a little vain, and she definitely enjoyed receiving compliments. "Thank you!" she told him brightly, looping her arm back through his and letting him lead her to where they were going. She noted the way, though it wouldn't help if she got stuck here somehow, really.

She gave the large man at the door a beaming smile, all charm and prettiness. Her manners weren't the refined ones of Richard, perhaps, but she had her own brand of charm. She laughed as she was suddenly twirling, her feet dancing with her usual casual grace. He was a fabulous dancer, and even if she wasn't always familiar with the more formal dances, he made it incredibly easy to make it look like she always knew what she was doing.

"This is some place," she said, just loud enough for him to hear amid all the noise.

Richard really did enjoy dancing with a clever partner. He was content to hold her in silence for the four or five numbers until she spoke. "It is," he nodded. "One of those out of the way places you have to know about because they don't advertise. Members only, like I mentioned. Met the couple that owns the place during the war. Ran with his uncle for a while."

They'd been Jaques and Jean, an older Frenchman and his young nephew, during the time they'd been smuggling muggleborns and half-bloods and blood traitors - as they had been styled - out of England. Jaques' luck had run out one night out on the moors, so he'd financed the purchase of the End of the Line to help support what was left of the family, something even his father didn't know about. It was one of a few cover identities Rich still kept active with occasional appearances in character, disguised with subtle appearance spells... just in case. Jean Forgeron still owned 25% of the place and kept that small flat for when he was down from Paris. A flat he occasionally let his English friend use.

"If you're in to seafood, the restaurant next door is the place to go when you're down at the docks. Convenient since I'm always about meeting ships; cargos in and cargos out."

When the song ended, Rich raised a questioning eyebrow. "Something from the bar, a drink at atable, or dance a few more?" Genie was young and athletic, and didn't seem to be tiring, but it was only polite to ask. And the sort of pureblood hothouse flower his mother usually tried to set him up with would be 'fatigued' after only one or two times around the dance floor and he'd developed the habit of offering his dancing partners frequent times off.

"Ahh, I see," Genie said with a nod, peering around with interest with that tidbit of history. She wasn't sure she wanted to pursue the line about the war, given his previous reaction to her history of being Snatched, though she did tilt her head in silent curiousity.

"Seafood is good," she assured him. Not as good as a steak, but then, these days she was predisposed to like red meat like that. Though the wolf did have a certain fondness for fish at times. "Ah yes, all your shipping business," she said. She knew vaguely he dealt in that sort of thing, but not the specifics. As nosy as she could be, even she knew she couldn't cross too many lines too soon.

"Oh come on, love. I'm not even a little sweaty yet," she teased him, shimmying her hips to the beat that was starting for the next song. "I'm not going to wilt, and you can water me with liquor here in a bit, I promise." She grinned, even though she never really did get drunk, with her metabolism. She could still enjoy it all.

"Shipping business?" Rich chuckled. "Yes, well... I suppose you could call it that in part. At any rate, if you get down this way, I can put your name on the member's list so you can drop in whenever you want." He simply ignored the inquisitive tilt of her head when he'd mentioned the war years since that last time that subject had come up it had gone a bit awkwardly.

"Have it your way, luv," he nodded. "I can go all night on the dance floor if that's your choice." Rich moved in close to take Genie into his arms again. "We don't have anywhere to be until just before sunrise." Stepping out with a bit of flashy footwork as the next number started, he led his athletic parter through some fairly complicated moves and concentrated on just having fun dancing with a pretty girl again.

"Well, I'll admit, this is the first time I've been out of the country since I was in school, I think. Unless you count places in the UK and all, we travel around on this same little rock." She grinned. "So you're giving me quite an experience, good sir, getting me that far away."

Genie laughed softly, a throaty sound. "Sounds brilliant," she told him. "I love to dance." It might not always be the pretty dancing he liked, but just moving with someone else was always brilliant nad heady. She also obviously didn't mind getting very close as they danced.

After several more dances, she twined her arms around his neck and brushed her lips over his. "Now, my dear, you can get us something to drink and we can stop putting all these other couples to shame for a few minutes while we enjoy them."

"Not that far away." Richard laughed softly into Genie's ear. "Maybe next time a two-Apparation jaunt? I've got a little place outside Astrakos in the southern Greek isles. Warm Agean, moonlit beach, dancing and food at the local taverna just a short walk away?"

"Have to admit I'm right fond of dancing myself."

He took her hand and headed toward the bar. "I think we can do that. Anything come to mind tonight? I certainly don't have to worry about your getting drunk and having to take you home early."

Genie shivered in a good way, grinning at him. "Maybe! That far and it'll probably be the farthest from home I've ever been." Though not dirt poor, her family hadn't been rich and her parents had worked hard for what they had. And she'd always earned her pocket money around the house or at the neighbors' places. "But Greece sounds quite possibly more decadent than your hot tub."

She chuckled warmly. "You are going to be in for a challenge if you're actually going to try to get me drunk," she told him. "It takes a hell of a lot to get me gone that far, and it's not a brag, so just get me something tasty and I'll be happy."

"Greece decadent? Ancient, yes. But simple, too. Mostly hard-working people in town who don't mind the Englishman who comes around for a few days every now and then to soak up the sunshine. I speak their language, I drink retsina and dance with them in the taverna. Don't even have that fancy a place for being out of town and on the beach. Sort of a visiting cousin who drops by when he gets a few days off work."

Rich shook his head. "I've seen the way you can put away Bourbon. Your last name sounds French, but are sure you really aren't Irish in disguise? No way I'm going to try to drink you under the table. One of those fruity drinks, or would you rather sample the local wines?"

It was very foreign to Genie, to be able to just pop in and out like that. Barring her furry problem, she had her pack ties as well as the fact that she simply couldn't afford to gallivant off everywhere. A lot of her money every month either went toward brewing the Wolfsbane or buying it. "Sounds charming," she told him and that was the truth.

She chuckled. "More English and Scottish than anything, if I'm honest. The name is deceptive." And yet also incredibly honest when you came down to it. "Let me try something fruity and see what I think. I can always try the wine if you get some." She smirked faintly. She wasn't beyond stealing a few sips of his drink.

"It is charming. Have to take you along next time I manage to get away. Maybe even give the whole walk on the moonlit beach thing a try."

Rich ordered something fruity, French, and frivolous for Genie and and one of the southern red wines for himself, then guided her over to a table a little bit away from the dance floor. "I'd noticed the name," he shrugged. "Used a few different names myself here and there during the war. Mother is French, and a veritable encyclopedia of all the eligible young women around, and has never mentioned you. But, I figured if it was any of my business, you'd have said something to me sooner or later."

"Sounds like a lot of fun," she said. Of course, it couldn't be a full moon night, unfortunately, unless he wanted a furry companion for that walk. With her potions that was safe, but she wasn't willing to risk telling anyone at this point, especially someone she had fun with.

"Yeah. It's just easier for now. The old me left during the war, the newer me is happy with this." She shrugged again and smiled. She didn't let herself dwell on her past. Or even the uncertainty of the future. "If you really wanted to know, I'd probably tell you. Or you could find out. I can tell you I'd not likely be on your mama's radar though." Her grin was impish. "I've never been that good a girl."

Richard shook his head. "I can keep a secret if you wanted to tell me, and yeah, I could probably find out. But since you haven't felt it was something you wanted to clue me in on, I won't. Not a good way to build trust, that, digging into a lady's past. I'll just make the observation that just because a woman has a past doesn't mean she doesn't have a future."

He chuckled. "Judging by some of the girls she's tried to get me hooked up with, a pulse seems to be her major criteria. If it's any consolation, I never seem to have had much luck with the good girls."

"Maybe sometime soon," she said with a smile. It was absolutely nothing against him, and she had a feeling he understood that. But she had family she still had to sort out, and she didn't really like thinking about that any more. Cowardly of a Gryffindor, she knew, but the status quo now wasn't bad.

She outright laughed, delighted and definitely not ladylike. "Well, I qualify for that!" she said,, taking a sip of her drink. "And you don't need to worry, I've never been terribly good about being 'good' by most people's standards." Behavior wise, anyway. She was kind and goodhearted, but, as Alexander always said, terribly naughty.

Rich made a quick dismissive gesture with his free hand as he sampled his wine. "Whenever or never, whatever. Lady's choice. I've got my past, you've got yours. In the end, we go on."

"And since you're not some fragile flower, to wilt from a little heat, would you like to go back on the dance floor, speaking of going on?"

"I'm no little wallflower to faint against you, handsome," she said with a laugh, downing a large gulp of her cold, fruity drink, grinning through the brief frozen headache. "So yes, I would love to dance some more." She leaned over and ghosted cold lips across his cheek playfully. "We'll see if you can keep up with me."

Richard laughed and tossed down the rest of his drink. "Oh, I think I can keep up with you just about anywhere you'd care to name." He stood and offered Genie his arm to lead her back out on to the dance floor.

"Father says its because my great great great grandmother on my mother's side married a security troll. Strength and endurance and all those manly virtues, you know. Having seen a portrait of Great-Aunt Angelique, I'm almost tempted to believe him."

He stepped off in time to the music, a slower piece, just enjoying holding the athletic young woman close as they danced.

Genie leered at him, half playful and half serious. She liked this fellow, and he was dead fun for a night out and a night in. And he didn't seem to be looking for serious, which she was always wary of. "Mmm, perhaps we'll have to see if you can keep up with me," she said, bumping her hip to his as she went back out to the dance floor with him.

She laughed until she snorted softly, arms twining around him. "Must have been quite the woman," was all she could say through her laughter.

She leaned into him, happy to have arms around her that knew what to do in each situation right now. His scent was pleasant, on both levels, and he was always a lot of fun.

"From her portrait, formidably ugly, short, and from what I've heard about her, Short of temper as well."

Genie was a fun person to be with. Certainly a pleasant enough armfull, both on and off the dance floor. And independent, not the clingy type. She seemed to have enough of a life of her own that she wasn't bothered by the way he could end up taking off somewhere on business for several days at a time.

"I'm on my own sort of schedule," he grinned. "Used to being up all night English time, so I'm ready to dance until near dawn, when we can go pick up breakfast and then watch the sun rise over the Eifel Tower. That's my plan, anyway, unless you have another idea."

She laughed. "Oh, the poor woman. Though the former things likely caused the latter," she said, grinning.

"I've been a night owl for years," she admitted. The wolf preferred the night. "Worked a lot of night jobs. It can put a crimp in social life sometimes, but while day time fun is all well and good, the night is where the real fun is," she said, an impish expression on her face. "And working the club, well, you don't get off til the morning anyway."

She nodded, fingers lightly stroking the back of his neck. "Sounds good to me," she told him. "I'm usually up for just about anything."
